Whether you're in retirement or nearing it, a little extra money each month could be helpful. Maybe you're looking for a way to stay busy, share your expertise, or simply do something you love —especially if you're not into golf or pickleball. If so, you're not alone, with more and more older people going back to work.

In August 2025, 38.1 million workers aged 55 and older were employed in the U.S., according to data derived from the Census Bureau and reported in AARP's August 2025 Employment Data Digest.

Although the reasons to return to the workplace vary, Bankrate reports that 58% of workers feel behind on retirement savings, while Goldman Sachs finds 74% struggling to save due to competing costs.

ResumeBuilder notes that 13% of retirees plan to unretire in 2025, mostly due to inflation and debt, up from prior years. F&G Annuities & Life Retirement Reconsidered Survey shows 29% of retirees intend to return to work, with inadequate savings as the top reason. Simply put, retirement shortfalls are pushing more people back to work than ever.

And, although you might be able to live off Social Security as your only source of income, it probably won't be enough to replace your pre-retirement standard of living. Unfortunately, most retirees lack the minimum savings to retire in all 50 states.

If you’re considering returning to work in retirement —whether for enjoyment or because you’re strapped for cash — consider the following 20 opportunities.
