I am the Senior Investing Editor at Kiplinger.com, having joined the publication in April 2021. I have over a decade of experience writing about the stock market and have covered corporate earnings reports and stock reactions over that time frame. I find corporate earnings to be so important because they allow investors a closer look into the strength of a company's fundamentals and how these may impact its share price down the road.

I am the former managing editor and chief investment strategist of Utility Forecaster, which was named one of "10 investment newsletters to read besides Buffett's" in 2015. Tuesday (5/20)
Earnings spotlight: Home Depot
Home Depot (HD) is one of several retail heavyweights on the earnings calendar, with the home improvement giant set to report its first-quarter results ahead of Tuesday's open.
UBS Global Research analyst Michael Lasser doesn't anticipate "any real earth-shattering news" from Home Depot – or from Lowe's (LOW), for that matter, which reports Wednesday morning.
However, he does expect the results to show stable demand and an engaged consumer, which bodes well for the second half.
Lasser also believes management will express confidence in handling President Donald Trump's tariffs due to the company's massive scale and "the element of home improvement spend that is needs-based, causing homeowners to engage with the category despite any price increases."
Analysts expect Home Depot to disclose Q1 earnings of $3.59 per share, down 1.1% year over year (YoY). Revenue is forecast to arrive at $39.1 billion (+7.5% YoY).

Wednesday (5/21)
Earnings spotlight: Target
Target (TGT) is another noteworthy retailer on the earnings calendar, with the company due to disclose its first-quarter results ahead of Wednesday's open.
Management warned in March of a "meaningful" decline in first-quarter profit due to "ongoing consumer uncertainty" and "tariff uncertainty."
As such, Oppenheimer analyst Rupesh Parikh expects the print to show a "challenged Q1" for Target that reflects "topline headwinds and company-specific expense pressures." He also believes the company has room to cut its full-year earnings-per-share forecast to $7 from its current $8.80 to $9.80 range.
Still, Parikh thinks longer-term traders should take advantage of any dips in the retail stock and believes "management has the ability to reaccelerate comp trends down the road."
As a group, analysts are calling for Q1 earnings of $1.70 per share (-16.3% YoY) on revenue of $24.4 billion (-0.4% YoY).

Earnings spotlight: Snowflake
Snowflake (SNOW) has been scaling the price charts in recent weeks amid a broader bounce in the stock market. Since April 4, the tech stock has surged more than 40%.
Can a well-received earnings report keep the wind at SNOW's back? We'll find out when the cloud-based data platform unveils its fiscal first-quarter results after Wednesday's close.
Analysts expect SNOW to report earnings of 21 cents per share (+50% YoY) on revenue of $1.01 billion (+21.3% YoY).
"Snowflake growth was stable in our channel checks with pockets of bookings weakness in March, but overall deal volume still in line with forecasts among partners," says Morgan Stanley analyst Sanjit Singh.
"Deal momentum from migrations is growing, interest in Cortex is up quarter over quarter, and data engineering was largely unchanged," the analyst adds.
