Earnings recap: UnitedHealth Group
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) stock has had a rough start to the year, with shares off more than 15% through the April 15 close. A cybersecurity attack at its Change Healthcare unit and a disappointing reimbursement rate for Medicare Advantage health plans are just two of the headwinds UNH has contended with, making it one of the worst Dow Jones stocks for 2024.
However, UNH stock jumped more than 7% out of the gate Tuesday in the initial reaction to the health insurer's first-quarter earnings report. For the three months ended March 31, UnitedHealth disclosed earnings of $6.91 per share on revenue of $99.8 billion. Analysts, on average, were anticipating earnings of $6.14 per share on revenue of $92.4 billion.
The earnings are adjusted and don't include the $682 million loss UnitedHealth incurred from the Change Healthcare data leak.
The report also showed that UNH's medical care ratio, which measures medical costs as a percentage of premium revenue, rose to 84.3% vs 82.2% in the year-ago period.

Earnings spotlight: Netflix
Netflix (NFLX) will disclose its first-quarter results after Thursday's close. The streaming giant had "a blockbuster fourth quarter, with subscriber numbers beating expectations and margin guidance upgraded," says Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.
Lund-Yates believes Netflix's results could get a boost from the company's cheaper ad-supported plan. "This is starting from a much lower base, meaning there's more room to run," the analyst says. "Password sharing crackdowns have also been bearing fruit, and there should still be some juice left to squeeze, but the benefits are finite."
Industry analysts expect NFLX to report Q1 earnings of $4.20 per share, up 45.8%
year-over-year (YoY) on revenue of $8.6 billion (+5.8% YoY).

Friday (4/19)
Earnings spotlight: Procter & Gamble
Procter & Gamble (PG) made headlines earlier this month when the consumer products giant hiked its quarterly dividend by 7% to $1.0065 per share. This is more of the same for one of Wall Street's best dividend stocks, with PG having raised its payout for 68 consecutive years.
The company will remain in the spotlight with its fiscal third-quarter earnings report due out ahead of Friday's open. Analysts, on average, expect P&G to disclose earnings of $1.31 per share (-4.4% YoY) on revenue of $19.0 billion (-5.5% YoY).
CFRA Research analyst Ana Garcia has a Buy rating on the consumer staples stock ahead of earnings. "We think PG's margin performance, notably above its pre-pandemic levels, should provide levers to offset any turbulence if it develops," Garcia writes in a note to clients. The analyst adds that the company's strong cash position, stock buyback program and healthy delta between its free cash flow and allocation strategies could "prove attractive should our top-line thesis fail to materialize."
