Should You Buy Renters’ Insurance Through a Landlord?
Think twice. You may be able find a cheaper policy elsewhere.
Question: I’m about to rent an apartment, and my landlord is offering renters’ insurance along with my lease. Is this a good deal? - R.M., Cincinnati
Answer: Not necessarily. Other policies may be cheaper and provide more extensive coverage, says Mark Fitzpatrick, of ValuePenguin, a consumer research site. If you buy coverage through your auto insurer, you may get a 10% to 20% multi-policy discount on both policies.
