Calculate Your Minimum Required Distribution

NOTE: The RMD requirement has been waived for 2009. Although you may take as much out of your IRA as you wish, you are not required to withdraw any amount. As the law stands now, RMDs will come back in 2010 and will be based on account values as of December 31, 2009.

This calculator makes it easy to compute your mandatory minimum distributions from a traditional IRA. All you need is your age on your birthday in 2009 and the total balance of your traditional IRA accounts as of December 31, 2008. Do not include balances from a Roth IRA because the original owner is never required to take distributions.

(If you're married and your spouse is ten years younger than you are, the RMD will be less than what this calculator shows. See IRS Publication 590 for details.)
