I am the Senior Investing Editor at Kiplinger.com, having joined the publication in April 2021. I have over a decade of experience writing about the stock market and have covered corporate earnings reports and stock reactions over that time frame. I find corporate earnings to be so important because they allow investors a closer look into the strength of a company's fundamentals and how these may impact its share price down the road.
I am the former managing editor and chief investment strategist of Utility Forecaster, which was named one of "10 investment newsletters to read besides Buffett's" in 2015. A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, and the Villanova University School of Law, and a former stockbroker, I have been working in financial media for more than 20 years.

Earnings calendar preview: Darden Restaurants
Darden Restaurants (DRI) is one of a handful of consumer discretionary stocks on the earnings calendar, with the Olive Garden parent slated to disclose its fiscal 2027 first-quarter results ahead of Thursday's open.
Analysts expect Darden to report earnings of $2.05 per share, up 4.1% year over year (YoY), on revenue of $3.2 billion (+6.7% YoY).
UBS Global Research analyst Dennis Geiger expects to see "solid same-store-sales trends and an intact earnings outlook despite select macro pressures." While the analyst says investor sentiment appears skewed to the negative on weak SSS at Olive Garden, LongHorn remains positive.

Overall, he believes underlying trends at the restaurant chain "should remain solid in fiscal 2027, supported by menu innovation and marketing."

Earnings calendar preview: Costco Wholesale
Costco Wholesale (COST) will represent the consumer staples sector when the membership warehouse retailer reports its fiscal fourth-quarter results after Thursday's close.
Wall Street is calling for earnings of $6.53 per share (+11.2% YoY) on revenue of $94.9 billion (+10.1% YoY).
"Excluding benefits related to tariff refunds, we believe core earnings results could again fall short of Street forecasts," says Oppenheimer analyst Rupesh Parikh. Consensus estimates represent a "best-case scenario if management delivers on expense controls and excess fuel profits are not reinvested in the business."
Still, Parikh has an Outperform (Buy) rating on COST, and says any weakness in the shares represents a buying opportunity.
