Is the stock market open on Labor Day in 2025? The answer to this question is no. The stock market will be closed Monday, September 1, for the Labor Day holiday. Bond traders will get an extended weekend too, with the bond market also closed on Monday.

Unlike some market holidays, however, there are no early hours ahead of Labor Day. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq Stock Market and bond market all have regular trading hours on Friday, August 29.

The long holiday weekend follows what Larry Adam, chief investment officer at Raymond James, calls "a summer to remember for equity investors."

As of this writing, the S&P 500 is up 11.4% since Memorial Day, marking its best summer since 2020. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has added 9.5% and the Nasdaq Composite is 15.2% higher.

"These gains were fueled by encouraging trade developments, the passage of the 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' lower-than-feared tariffs, and resilient corporate fundamentals," Adam says. But the CIO warns that the full impact of tariffs on the economy and corporate earnings has yet to unfold, and with valuations stretched, he remains cautious in the near term.

Investors looking for options amid this uncertainty will want to browse through the Kiplinger ETF 20. This list of our favorite cheap ETFs is a resource for those wanting to build a broadly diversified portfolio, and at low costs to boot.

Meanwhile, for those wondering what time does the market open for regular trading hours, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday.

Are banks open on Labor Day? The answer to that question is no. Monday, September 1, is one of several bank holidays in 2024, and so banks will also be closed.
