Maine’s lowest income tax rate of 5.8% (on taxable income less than $21,450 for single filers) is higher than some other states’ maximum rate. The state tries to make up for that by charging a relatively low sales tax (and not letting municpalities add to it).

Low:5.8% (on taxable income less than $21,450 for single filers; less than $42,900 for joint filers)

High: 7.15% (on taxable income of $50,750 or more for single filers, $101,550 for joint filers)

Effective tax rate: 5.8% for single filers, 6.04% for joint filers.

Motor Fuel Taxes

Gasoline: $0.3001 per gallon.
Diesel: $0.3121 per gallon.

Property Taxes

In Maine, residents pay an average $1,424 in taxes per $100,000 of assessed home value.

Vehicle Taxes

Sales tax is due. An annual excise tax is also levied. The rate depends on a car’s age and value (set by the original MSRP, or window sticker price). Example: The owner of a three-year-old car with an MSRP of $19,500 would pay an excise tax of $263.

Sin Taxes

Cigarettes: $2.00 per pack
Snuff: $2.02 per ounce
Other tobacco products: 20% of wholesale price.

Beer: $0.35 per gallon
Wine: $0.60 per gallon
Liquor: $5.83 per gallon
Maine directly controls the distribution and sale of alcohol. Liquor tax is an estimate by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States and published by the Tax Foundation.

Taxes On Wireless Service

Inheritance and Estate Taxes

Maine decoupled from Federal law and set its 2018 estate tax exemption at the old federal limit: $5.6 million. Tax rates range from 8% to 12%. The exemption will be adjusted for inflation; an estimate of 2019’s limit is $5.712 million.

Oddball Tax

Anyone who grows, purchases, sells, handles or processes blueberries is taxed at a rate of $0.015 per pound of berries.
