It's no secret that Black Friday has transitioned from being a single day of bargain shopping to a week or more of deals that kick off in early November and ramp up through Black Friday weekend. Retailers are hoping shoppers will spend more no matter if they're cozied up at home on a laptop or perusing the aisles at a brick-and-mortar store.
For some shoppers, it can be overwhelming to have to sift through dozens of email sale alerts and print circulars to narrow down the best deals. That's where we come in. With help from a few shopping experts, we examined the Black Friday doorbusters and deals being offered by five major retailers -- Amazon, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart -- to determine which are worthy of your hard-earned cash. Here's what we found.
For Black Friday shoppers who’d rather skip the in-store crowds, Amazon will be a go-to during the Black Friday shopping weekend. The e-commerce site has already started posting early Black Friday deals, but serious bargain hunters are patiently waiting for their Black Friday lightning deals (Amazon's spin on doorbuster deals) to launch.
RetailMeNot.com's Sara Skirboll, Hot Shopping Tips podcast's Lisa Lee Freeman, CardRates.com's Brittney Mayer and Cheapism.com's Saundra Latham to weigh-in on Amazon's best Black Friday deals. Here are their top picks:
Alert Costco shoppers are on top of Costco’s Black Friday deals ahead of the game. Members are already dipping in and buying the first batch of the popular wholesale retailer’s month-long Black Friday offerings.
The warehouse club started rolling out Black Friday deals in early November and plans to ramp up offerings through Cyber Monday (November 26). Costco is closed on Thanksgiving Day (November 22) -- deals are available online at Costco.com -- but stores re-open on Black Friday (November 23), when many of the biggest bargains will be on display.
BlackFriday.com's Sarah Hollenbeck, Coupons.com's Jeanette Pavini, NerdWallet.com's Courtney Jespersen and True Trae's Trae Bodge helped us round up Costco's noteworthy bargains:
Home Depot is closed on Thanksgiving Day, but its full Black Friday ad will drop the day before Thanksgiving to allow time to scope out potential purchases. Stores open their doors early on the morning of Black Friday (times vary by location), and the deepest Black Friday deals on HomeDepot.com will go online at 6 a.m. ET on Black Friday. Don't be surprised if the hottest items sell out before the weekend. You'll score a $5 off coupon by going to the website now to sign up for email or text alerts on upcoming sales.
Meantime, ahead of the full reveal of Home Depot's Black Friday ad, the home-improvement chain is already running pre-Black Friday specials. Here are two deals to consider:
We also asked BlackFriday.com's Hollenback and consumer savings expert Andrea Woroch which Black Friday deals are best to buy at Home Depot. This is what they said:
Lowe's likes to launch its Black Friday sales early. In fact, the home-improvement retailer offered what it called Black Friday deals all the way back in July. But the real action starts in November and ramps up to some of the biggest discounts on Black Friday itself, when Lowe's re-opens its doors after closing for Thanksgiving Day.
In advance of Black Friday, Lowe's is already touting big markdowns on appliances, tools, holiday decorations and smart-home items both in-store and online. The chain hasn't officially released its Black Friday ad yet, but shopping experts say to expect more of the same on Black Friday, based on pre-Black Friday sales and past experience.
NerdWallet.com's Jespersen, savings expert Woroch and BlackFriday.com's Hollenback gave us the rundown on which Black Friday deals are worth the hype at Lowe's:
Die-hard Black Friday shoppers know that they can depend on Walmart to deliver the (deeply discounted) goods. Those looking to get a jumpstart can go to the website now to find early deals on items such as small appliances, computers and baby gear. Select doorbuster deals will be available online starting November 21 at 10 p.m. ET. In-store doorbusters will be available on Thanksgiving Day (November 22) starting at 6 p.m. local time and valid all day on Black Friday (November 23) while supplies last.
