7 'Second-City' Fall Trip Destinations in the US to Skip the Crowds
Why get stuck in traffic in Yellowstone when you can see majestic sights without the crowds?
Iconic vacation spots become iconic for a reason. But many of these spots have surged so far in popularity that it's not always a fun experience to visit there anymore when you have to mingle with intense crowds.
That's true even within the U.S., where certain parks, beaches, trails and cities are getting uncomfortably overrun. That's a growing concern in 2026 as Americans are continuing to spend more on domestic travel amid both inflation and U.S.-centric events like the World Cup and America 250.
The solution for travelers? Look into "second-city tourism," a travel trend where you pick a spot that offers a similar experience but is less well known. With that in mind, I took a look at seven popular trips people tend to take during the fall within the U.S., and found more unique, alternative itineraries for each one. Here are your choices for an incredible autumn vacation that feels a little more off the beaten path.

National park? Instead of Yellowstone, head to the Grand Tetons.
Yellowstone is easily one of the most famous and busiest national parks in the country, and for good reason, of course. But during the fall, you can escape some of the crowds and have a picturesque experience by opting for the Grand Tetons instead.
September and October are widely considered the quietest months to visit there but still have a good experience. You'll see beautiful fall foliage amid the mountain scenery (plus, the crisp weather is an asset during hiking). It's also elk mating season, which is an interesting phenomenon to be present for.
Spooky small town? Instead of Salem, head to Sleepy Hollow.
If you get into the Halloween spirit in the fall, you probably want to visit a town that does the holiday right. Salem, Massachusetts (notorious for its history of witch trials) gets over a million visitors in October.
To avoid the throng of visitors but still get the haunted vibes, Sleepy Hollow in New York offers a similar experience. The site of the iconic ghost story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," this small town has nightly cemetery tours, a haunted hayride, homes and businesses boasting incredible Halloween decor, and even possible sightings of the famous Headless Horseman.
It's the perfect way to get a historic, seasonally haunting experience without the packed crowds.
West Coast, nature-focused trip? Instead of Big Sur, head to Cannon Beach.
We all know there are incredible views and activities by the Pacific Ocean, but many people opt to stick to California when planning a West Coast beach trip. And while Big Sur is fantastic, heading up north to Oregon — Cannon Beach, specifically — offers you a beautiful trip that's a little more off the beaten path.
Visitors to the Cannon Beach area can explore the beach, where you can see tidal pools, and Ecola State Park, which lets you hike along coastal cliffs and through a forest. During the fall season, enjoy keeping an eye on whale migration. Plus, it's a cozier, more intimate time to be there, as many locals say it's even prettier during the stormier seasons.
One more added bonus if you're traveling with teenagers: You can road trip down the coast to see the dunes that inspired Dune, ahead of the new movie coming out this winter.
Big city? Instead of New York City, head to Philadelphia.
New York City may be the biggest city in the United States, but just two hours away, you can indulge in the arts, eat incredible meals, learn about history and generally enjoy the vibes of a larger city on a much smaller (and less expensive) scale.
You don't need the Met: The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a wonderful art collection with works by famed painters Monet and Degas. The Philadelphia Magic Gardens rivals any spot in NYC for Instagram-worthy charm. The Reading Terminal Market has food options just as good (and often even better) than Chelsea Market.
In the fall, you can catch a show at Opera Philadelphia, which even The New York Times has been raving about in recent years. They're producing a rarely performed Mozart opera with superstar singers Lawrence Brownlee and Anthony Roth Costanzo in September. Plus, fall is the perfect time to be in Philly if you're a sports fan. Eagles fans are, for better or worse, some of the most passionate in the country.
Are the mountains calling? Instead of Aspen, head to the Great Smoky Mountains.
Aspen might generate more social media chatter with its skiing opportunities and dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains, but during the fall, the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee offers even more beautiful sights. The fall foliage is in full bloom, the weather is much more comfortable for long days hiking, and it's still warm enough to camp.
You can also attend fall festivals in nearby towns like Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival runs during September and October and offers the opportunity to buy local crafts, check out unique pumpkin carvings and see live performances. It's the perfect complement to a fall camping trip.
Winery-focused trip? Instead of Napa, head to Carmel Valley.
Tourists flock to California's wineries during the fall as it's the harvest season, which means there is more activity going on than ever – plus, the vineyards turn absolutely striking colors during this time, too. And while Napa is easily the most famed location for a wine tour, there are other equally charming options.
Consider Carmel Valley, also in California. It's a much less crowded place, but it's still famous for its wine and natural beauty. Because there are fewer people, you can have a more intimate experience and really get to know local winery owners, too.
Southern city with unique history? Instead of New Orleans, head to St. Augustine.
Everyone knows the South can get very hot and humid, which makes autumn one of the perfect times to head that way: It's much cooler and more bearable during these months.
Plus, it can be one of the best places to celebrate Halloween. New Orleans has a fascinating history rife with ghost stories, but St. Augustine in Florida offers a similar experience with less intense crowds.
Tourists can still take unusual ghost tours, learn about unusual history (it is usually dubbed the oldest city in America), and take in incredible southern architecture, but it all feels a little slower-paced and more accessible here.
