No Profit, Big Salary

Thinking about a nonprofit career?

For profitable employment, check the nonprofit sector. Johns Hopkins University researchers say nonprofit workers, including volunteers, represent 11% of the U.S. workforce. Total nonprofit wages exceed the total in both the utility and the construction industries, and they come close to finance and insurance payrolls. Average weekly salaries trail those at for-profit employers by 6%. But nonprofits sometimes pay better for the same work. Not-for-profit hospitals pay 7% more than their for-profit cousins, for example. Health care accounts for more than half of nonprofit work.
