Best and Worst Buys of April 2013

Find discounts this month on laptops, HDTVs, jewelry and more.

If spring finally feels like it has arrived where you live (as it has where I am), you might feel the urge to do a little shopping to spruce up your wardrobe or home. But before you hit the stores, make sure you're going to get the best deal possible. To help you do this, here's a look at what you can expect to find on sale in April -- and what you should wait a little longer to buy, according to dealnews.com, which analyzes deals from past years to predict what will be discounted this year.

What's on sale this month ...

Big-screen HDTVs. Prices on 55-inch name-brand LCD HDTVs are actually lower now than Black Friday 2012, with deals starting at $688. Prices on 3D models, which hit all-time lows of $747 in March, should remain low. And 60-inch LCD HDTVs, which fell to a low of $698 in March, should continue to be discounted.

Clothing. Expect to see retailers mark down spring clothing 30% to 40% this month for mid-season sales. For deeper discounts of 50% or more, though, wait until the end of the season in May.

Jewelry. Now is the time to buy something shiny for Mom because the deals are better now (especially from online retailers) than they will be closer to Mother's Day in May.

Laptops. Because sales of new Windows 8 laptops are bad, Microsoft is offering manufacturer discounts of up to 20%, which is bringing down prices on 15-inch laptops running Intel's Ivy Bridge processors. For example, a 15.6-inch Acer Aspire with 6 gigabytes of RAM and a 750-GB hard drive was going for $299 in March, and dealnews.com expects this price to be the new norm.

Kindle Fire. Prices on Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch Android Tablets are near all-time lows, according to dealnews.com. The base 16GB Wi-Fi version now starts at $269.

Wait longer to buy ...

iPads. Apple is expected to release a new version of the iPad this month. So the current model will likely be discounted by as much as $59 at least a month after the new model debuts.

Mattresses. If you need a new mattress, wait until May -- especially around Memorial Day. Expect to see good discounts when stores have their sales over the three-day weekend.

Vacuums. Although spring often is touted as a good time to buy a vacuum, you'll find better deals in October and November.
