Our Complete 2007 Mutual Fund Rankings

Now you can sort more than 3,000 domestic and foreign funds using a number of factors.

Every September, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine looks at the biggest and best-performing mutual funds in the world. You can now track continuously updated rankings of the top 25 performers in all key sectors using our new Mutual Fund Center rankings tool.

But as an additional service to our magazine and online readers this year, Kiplinger.com offers our complete spreadsheet of 2,900 domestic funds and 534 foreign funds that we have tracked from June 30, 2006, until June 30, 2007. Please note this is a year snapshot and will not be updated. You can use our rankings tool for up-to-date information. But these spreadsheets provide rankings for almost four times as many funds as appeared in the September issue of the magazine.

Open these databases using Excel software, and you can sort by a number of important factors on your PC or laptop. But a note of caution: A complete printout of either of these files could run into hundreds of pages. Better to use Excel to target selected pages to print.

Decile rank shows performance for each of the past five 12-month periods through the end of June, 2006, compared with other funds using the same investment style. Funds are ranked 1 (top 10%) to 10 (bottom 10%).

Down market shows returns from March 24, 2000, through October 9, 2002, the last bear market for stocks.

Volatility rank measures volatility of all stock funds on a scale of 1 (least volatile) to 10 (most volatile).

Maximum load tells you the highest sales fee for purchasing shares. Returns do not reflect loads.

But a fund's expense ratio -- the percentage of assets taken out annually to cover management and other fees -- is included in total return. For more on how to navigate the tables, see our useful tips.

Still want more? You can analyze 21,000 funds with Steele Mutual Fund Expert/Kiplkinger Special Edition. The software, with data from Morningstar through June 30, lets you compare funds with one another and with 237 indexes and category averages. The special offer costs $32 (plus $4 for an optional CD). You can download the software at www.mutualfundexpert.com or call 800-315-9002.
