Macy’s Will Close 66 Stores in 2025 – Check If Your Local Store Is One of Them
Discover why Macy’s is closing 66 stores, where to shop for similar deals and how to maximize savings before stores shut down.

The news that legendary department store Macy's is set to close 66 stores in 2025 might be jarring, but 350 stores still remain and will be the focus of the brand's growth initiatives over the next year.
The remaining 350 stores, along with Macy's online presence, is part of the company's plan to "return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth," according to the brand.
Of course, changing consumer habits are also part of the reason 66 stores are closing. The shift away from shopping in-person has been growing for some time now, as is concern from investors that Macy's is more valuable for its real estate space instead of the functioning stores.
In December of 2024, investment firm Barington Capital and private equity firm Thor Equities actually called on the company to make "drastic changes" to make its stock more valuable, according to CNN. Some of these drastic changes would be selling off its real estate.
However, critics of this plan argued that the company should be focused on long-term strategies instead of quick fixes that will leave the stock less profitable in the long-run.
Macy’s provided little detail on the timeline for the store closures, indicating that the majority of the locations are expected to close during the first quarter of 2025.
If you’re worried about when your local store is closing, it’s best to ask the store employees, since specific closing dates aren’t widely disclosed.
As of May 14, Macy's has closed 55 of the 66 stores originally scheduled for shutdown.
Why Macy’s is closing 66 stores in 2025
Macy's decision to close 66 stores is part of that long-term strategy pivot, as outlined in the company's "A Bold New Chapter" strategy. The strategy also plans to take advantage of brands under the Macy's, Inc. portfolio, like Bluemercury and Bloomingdale's.
According to a Macy's press release, "Fifteen Bloomingdale’s nameplate stores and at least 30 new Bluemercury stores, along with roughly 30 Bluemercury remodels are anticipated to be opened in new and existing markets over the next three years."
In addition to growing its luxury and beauty brands, Macy’s is improving online and in-store shopping integration. The company is also modernizing its supply chain and using data to personalize customer experiences.
Alternatives to Macy's: Competing stores offering great deals
Retailers like Walmart and Target have seen success over the past few years as they've managed to keep prices low while staying on top of trends. Macy's, which sells discounted items and high-end items alike, has struggled to reach a niche consumer that likes to save on retail costs while still staying on top of trends.
Stores like Nordstrom Rack and Dillard's Clearance, and Saks Off Fifth dominate the discounted designer market, whereas stores like Kohl's and JC Penney might be consumers' first choice when shopping for affordable and discounted home products.
However, the 66 Macy's stores that are closing present a great opportunity to take advantage of discounted designer, home and accessory deals as stores will have to liquidate merchandise.
Save big amid Macy’s store closures
You can already find clearance deals online, with discounted items available across various price ranges. Whether you're searching for high-ticket items under $200 or budget-friendly finds under $10, there are plenty of markdowns to explore.
Shopping at any of the 66 stores that are closing will guarantee even deeper discounts. Don't forget; whether you're shopping online or in-store, you can still take advantage of Macy's Star Rewards program, the free-to-join program that allows you to rack up points for each dollar spent and secure free shipping deals.
