Stephen Harbeck joined the legal staff of the Securities Investors Protection Corp., a nonprofit created by Congress to offer protection to customers of failed brokerage firms, in 1975. He became General Counsel in 1995 and was elected President and CEO in 2003. His tenure is marked by the ongoing liquidations of Lehman Brothers, the largest bankruptcy in history, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, the largest Ponzi scheme in history, and MF Global, the eighth-largest bankruptcy in history. Harbeck has served as Adjunct Professor of Bankruptcy Law at American University's Washington College of Law. In addition, he served as a sergeant in Vietnam in 1970-1971. His specialty was Forward Operations and Intelligence, Sniper.
