Electric bills continue to surge. With the summer months driving up demand, the average household will spend 10.5% more, per the National Energy Assistance Directors Association.

The main culprit behind your energy costs? Your air conditioner. This is where a smart thermostat helps you control costs. If you plan to be away from home for days or weeks at a time, you can set your thermostat at a higher temperature. This reduces the demand placed on your AC unit and the energy it uses.

Over time, setting your thermostat by 7 to 10 degrees warmer when you're away from home lowers your energy costs by around 10%. This could equate to hundreds of dollars per year. On top of that, you can save $50 on a new unit during Prime Day.

Ultimately, while Prime Day isn't overflowing with deep discounts, it doesn't mean you can't find good deals. If you use Microsoft Outlook, Teams or Microsoft 365 regularly, there's a new scam making the rounds that's worth paying attention to, especially because it doesn't look like the typical phishing attack people are used to spotting.

The FBI recently warned that cybercriminals are using a more sophisticated approach to trick people into handing over access to their Microsoft accounts. And unlike older scams filled with fake websites, spelling mistakes or suspicious links, this one can appear surprisingly legitimate at first glance.

Security experts say the scam is spreading because it's easier for cybercriminals to launch and harder for everyday users to recognize in the moment. Even people who use multi-factor authentication (MFA) can be vulnerable if they're tricked into approving a login request they didn't initiate.

Here's how the scam works, why it's different from traditional phishing attacks and what Microsoft users can do to better protect themselves.

How the Kali365 Microsoft scam works

The attack uses something called "device code phishing," which sounds technical but is actually fairly simple once you understand how it works.

Microsoft's device code login system is a legitimate feature designed for devices like smart TVs or streaming devices that don't have easy keyboards. Instead of typing a password directly on the device, users are given a short code to enter on a Microsoft login page from another device. Scammers are now exploiting that process.

According to the FBI, the scam typically starts with an email or Teams message pretending to be from a trusted service like SharePoint, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams or another document-sharing platform. The message often creates urgency by claiming you need to open a file, review a document or respond quickly to a request.

The victim is then instructed to visit a real Microsoft login page and enter a provided device code.

Because the website itself is legitimate, many people assume the request is safe. But entering that code actually authorizes the attacker's device to access the account. Once the victim completes the authentication process, the hacker can capture account tokens that allow ongoing access to Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and other Microsoft 365 services.

Why this phishing attack is harder to spot

Most people are taught to watch for phishing red flags like fake websites, misspelled company names or suspicious URLs. This attack avoids many of those warning signs because the Microsoft login page itself is real. That means someone could still fall victim even if they carefully check the web address.

Instead, scammers rely heavily on urgency and impersonation tactics. Messages may appear to come from coworkers, clients or familiar services asking you to quickly review a file or complete a login step.

Cybersecurity experts say this shift reflects how phishing scams are evolving. Rather than stealing passwords directly, attackers are increasingly trying to steal authenticated sessions or access tokens that let them stay signed in without repeatedly triggering password or MFA checks.

Can hackers really bypass MFA?

In a way, yes, but not because MFA itself is broken. The FBI says attackers are not technically defeating multi-factor authentication. Instead, victims are unknowingly approving the login themselves through the legitimate Microsoft process.

That’s an important distinction because MFA is still one of the best protections available and should not be turned off.

However, this scam shows that MFA alone is no longer enough if users are tricked into approving unauthorized access requests.

Security experts still recommend using authenticator apps instead of SMS text-message verification when possible because app-based MFA generally offers stronger protection against other types of phishing attacks.

Signs your Microsoft account may be compromised

One challenge with token-based attacks is that hackers can sometimes maintain access without immediately changing your password.

Still, there are a few warning signs that could indicate someone has gained access to your account:

• Unexpected MFA approval requests or login prompts
• Login alerts from unfamiliar devices or locations
• Emails sent from your Outlook account that you didn’t send
• Strange inbox rules, deleted emails or missing messages
• Password reset notifications you didn't request
• Unusual Teams activity or messages
• New connected apps or permissions you don’t recognize

The FBI also warns that attackers may maintain persistent access until suspicious sessions or tokens are manually revoked.

How to protect your Outlook and Microsoft 365 accounts

While scammers continue finding new ways to target users, a few habits can significantly reduce your risk.

Never enter a device code unless you initiated the login

This is one of the biggest takeaways from the FBI warning. If you receive an unexpected request asking you to enter a Microsoft device code, stop and verify the request independently before proceeding.

Be cautious with urgent Teams or email requests

Even if a message appears to come from someone you know, double-check unexpected requests involving logins, authentication approvals or document sharing.

Review active sessions and connected apps regularly

Microsoft accounts allow users to review signed-in devices and connected applications. Periodically checking for unfamiliar sessions or app permissions can help you spot suspicious activity earlier.

Turn on security alerts

Enable Microsoft security notifications so you receive alerts about suspicious logins, unusual activity or new devices accessing your account.

Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager

Even though this attack doesn’t rely on password theft, strong passwords still matter because attackers often combine multiple tactics.

What to do if you entered a suspicious device code

If you think you may have approved access for a scammer, act quickly.

The FBI recommends taking these steps immediately:

• Change your Microsoft password
• Signing out of all sessions can help invalidate authentication tokens attackers may be using to maintain access.
• Review and revoke any unfamiliar connected apps and permissions
• Review inbox forwarding rules for unauthorized changes
• Run antivirus or security scans on your devices
• Contact your employer’s IT department if it's a work account
• Monitor financial and personal accounts for suspicious activity

You can also report phishing attempts or suspicious activity to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and through Microsoft’s security reporting tools.

Consider reducing your online footprint

Cybercriminals often use publicly available information to make phishing attacks appear more convincing. Data broker removal services such as Incogni and DeleteMe can help reduce the amount of personal information available online, including addresses, phone numbers and family relationships.

While these services won't remove a hacker's access to a compromised Microsoft account or stop a phishing attack already in progress, they may help reduce the amount of personal information criminals can use to impersonate trusted contacts or craft targeted scams.

Even as scammers evolve their tactics, awareness remains one of the most effective defenses. Understanding how device-code phishing works can help you recognize suspicious login requests and avoid granting access to attackers, even when the Microsoft login page itself is legitimate.

Buying a new smartphone can set you back significantly. Americans spend an average of $634 on a phone, according to a 2025 survey from and premium models of the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and other popular devices run more than $1,000. Those costs are likely one reason that people are hanging on to their phones for a while before upgrading, keeping them for nearly two years and five months, according to the Reviews.org survey.

To protect your pricey device, you can buy phone insurance. With these plans, which you may be able to purchase through your wireless carrier, the phone manufacturer or from insurance companies, you can submit a claim if your phone is damaged, lost or stolen. After you pay a deductible, which may range from about $50 to $250, you'll get a repair or replacement. Many insurance plans cost $10 to $20 per month.

Some credit cards offer phone insurance as a free benefit if you pay your wireless bill with the card; among them are American Express Platinum ($895 annual fee), Capital One Venture X ($395), Chase Freedom Flex, and the Wells Active Cash and Autograph cards, which are all included in our list of the best rewards credit cards.

As with other plans, these come with deductibles, and they impose coverage limits of $600 to $800 per claim. Keep in mind, however, that if your wireless carrier offers a discount for automatic payments, the discount may not apply if you use a credit card.

Weigh the options

Consumer advocates say that the math often favors skipping phone insurance, if you have to pay for it.

"When we gamed it out, you basically came out ahead in almost all situations without paying for the insurance," says Nathan Proctor, senior director of the Right to Repair campaign for U.S. PIRG, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization. Most people won't file enough claims to make paying the premium and deductible worthwhile, Proctor says.

Still, in some cases, getting insurance may make sense. "If you're spending $1,500 or $2,000 on a smartphone — even if you're a careful user — I would recommend opting for some sort of smartphone insurance," says Louis Ramirez, deals editor-in-chief for tech-review site Tom's Guide.

If you sign up for insurance, be sure to read the fine print. Check details such as the deductible amount and how many claims you can make per year; often, the cap is two or three claims. Also review the rules that determine whether your device will be repaired or replaced, as well as any coverage exclusions. Most plans don't include normal wear and tear, for example.

If you forgo insurance and damage your phone, going to an independent repair shop can be an efficient and affordable option. The cost of replacing a screen, for example, averages about $300, and you may pay less than that, depending on the model and availability of parts.

But more-advanced repairs, such as fixing a broken camera with complex features, may not be available at a shop, says Ramirez. In those cases, you may need a protection plan from the manufacturer, which can cover the gamut because it has unrestricted access to parts and knows the device inside and out.

Apple iPhone owners could receive a payout from a proposed $250 million class-action settlement tied to allegations that Apple overstated the availability of certain AI-powered Siri features while marketing the iPhone 16 lineup.

The lawsuit (PDF) alleged that Apple promoted advanced Apple Intelligence features before some of the tools were fully available, potentially leading consumers to purchase or upgrade devices based on capabilities that had not yet launched. The claims centered largely on promised Siri upgrades that Apple previewed during its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple denied the allegations and did not admit wrongdoing, but agreed to settle the lawsuit for $250 million pending court approval.

What Apple Intelligence promised iPhone buyers

The advertising at the center of the lawsuit occurred during the 2024 release of the iPhone 16 lineup, when Apple promoted its "Apple Intelligence" software features alongside the new devices. The company said the AI-powered Siri upgrades would deliver more personalized responses, deeper app integration and greater contextual awareness.

In a March 2025 statement to Daring Fireball, Apple spokesperson Jacqueline Roy said the company had been working on a "more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps."

However, Roy also acknowledged that the rollout was taking longer than expected. She said Apple anticipated releasing the features "in the coming year."

Why consumers say they were misled

The lawsuit alleges that some consumers upgraded their phones specifically to access the advertised AI tools, even though some of the features hadn't fully launched following the iPhone 16 release.

Part of the controversy centered on Apple’s use of the phrase "Available Now" on its Apple Intelligence webpage. Some consumers said the wording created the impression that all advertised features were immediately accessible when the phones launched.

The National Advertising Division later recommended that Apple discontinue or modify the claim, finding that the disclosures and disclaimers were not sufficiently clear to avoid potential confusion. Apple subsequently removed the "Available Now" language from the Apple Intelligence page.

Which iPhone owners could qualify for money

Approximately 37 million devices purchased in the United States are included in the proposed class-action settlement. Eligible devices purchased between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, include:

• iPhone 16
• iPhone 16 Plus

• iPhone 16 Pro Max
• iPhone 15 Pro

How much money could eligible Apple users receive?

It's not unusual for tech companies to drop certain features or types of support for aging tech. Netflix dropped support for older devices recently itself. At a certain point, the older hardware just can't run modern software. But, typically, the old device is still functional. It just won't be able to do some of the things that newer models can do.

But the latest news from Amazon looks like it could be a bigger deal than that. In May, anyone with a Kindle built before 2013 will no longer have access to the Kindle Store, Kindle Unlimited or the "send to Kindle" service — potentially rendering the device all but useless.

Here's a look at what support is going away, what it means for how you use your pre-2013 Kindle and whether or not you're going to have to upgrade.

Which Kindle features are going away and which devices are affected?

According to a customer service page on Amazon, the tech giant will end support next month for the following devices:

• Kindle 1st Generation
• Kindle 2nd Generation
• Kindle DX
• Kindle DX Graphite
• Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation)
• Kindle 4
• Kindle Touch
• Kindle 5
• Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation

On May 20, anyone with one of those devices will no longer be able to buy, borrow or download new books from the Kindle Store or Kindle Unlimited.

You also won't be able to buy or borrow books through the Kindle Store on another device and then use "send to Kindle" to transfer them to your device.

Anything currently downloaded to your device will stay there after the May 20 cutoff date. And you'll still be able to buy and access books in your Kindle library from other devices.

Can you keep using your older Kindle anyway?

Without the ability to get new books directly through your older Kindle or use "send to Kindle" to transfer them from another device, it's possible those with older devices might be left with no way at all to get new books onto their Kindle.

According to an Ars Technica article from last year, Amazon discontinued the "download & transfer via USB" feature for all Kindles regardless of age in February 2025. The feature was originally intended for customers with older Kindles that weren't Wi-Fi enabled to download books from the Kindle Store to their computer and then transfer them to their device via USB.

If that feature truly is gone for all devices, you will have no way to get a new book onto your older device after "send to Kindle" disappears. You should test this out before the May 20 deadline to see if you are still able to transfer books via USB from another device over to your Kindle.

If you can't, your older Kindle will only be usable for personal files that you can download and transfer. That can include PDFs, ePub files and other compatible formats that you download from elsewhere on the web, but likely excludes a lot of copyright-protected eBooks.

Should you buy a new Kindle?

Given how limited the functionality of your older Kindle will likely become next month, you might be better off replacing it. The good news is, if you have a device this old, you could upgrade to a newer but still used Kindle rather than springing for the latest (and priciest) model.

You might want to upgrade to something a few years newer than what you have, though. It's possible that Amazon will continue dropping support for older models as the years go by.

Upgrading from a 2012 to a 2013 model might only buy you a couple more years of device support. But upgrading from a 2012 to, say, a 2020 Kindle will likely buy you a lot more time before you're forced to upgrade again — and you're still taking advantage of used pricing.

What about Libby or similar library apps?

If you use Libby to borrow ebooks from your library, you've likely been enjoying the convenience of the "send to Kindle" feature in the app. So far, it seems like you'll lose that ability to send the books you borrow to your Kindle.

In this case, you will most likely need to upgrade to a newer Kindle or another ereader to maintain access to your borrowed ebooks.

If Libby is your main source of ebooks, consider a Kobo ereader. Many of the newer models come with built-in OverDrive support (the classic version of Libby) so you can browse and borrow library books directly from your ereader.

You can also install the Libby app directly on the Amazon Fire tablet (or any tablet that runs on Android or iOS), though you won't have the e-ink screen or the distraction-free experience of an ereader.

Starting August 1, a new round of tariffs is set to take effect, and this one could hit your wallet right where it hurts: electronics.

President Donald Trump's tariffs will hit a wide range of goods imported from China.

While not every device will be affected right away, many consumer electronics — smartphones, laptops, tablets and gaming consoles — are likely to see price increases in the coming months.

Retailers might absorb some of the extra cost at first, but higher prices almost always reach consumers once existing inventory runs out.

Which devices should you prioritize? Which ones can wait for a future sale? Here's what you need to know.

Why tariffs might drive up gadget and tech costs

Earlier this summer, Trump reached a trade deal with China that paused additional tariff hikes for 90 days but kept in place the existing 20% “fentanyl” and 10% “reciprocal” tariffs on Chinese goods. That pause is still in effect and is currently scheduled to expire on August 12, 2025, unless extended.

On July 22, the administration announced that it had reached a trade agreement with Japan and suggested that a deal with the European Union was also in the works. However, the specifics of both agreements remain largely informal.

For countries without formal deals, tariffs are set to revert to pre‑April levels on August 1, meaning many electronics and components could still face higher import costs in the months ahead.

For consumers, this means many products — especially electronics that rely on global supply chains — could face price pressures in the near future, as retailers pass along higher import costs.

Retailers and importers are already bracing for impact. In a recent NPR report, experts warned that many consumer electronics will see a price bump as early as late summer, just in time for back-to-school shopping and ahead of the holiday rush.

That uncertainty is prompting many shoppers to move up their usual buying plans for back‑to‑school and the holiday season.

How tariffs might lead to higher electronics prices

Tariffs are essentially taxes on imports. When the cost of importing goods goes up, companies usually face a choice: Eat the cost or pass it on to consumers.

For higher-ticket electronics, where profit margins might already be tight, those costs are more likely to be passed along, especially once current inventory sells through..

Even American brands aren’t insulated. Most devices rely on complex global supply chains, and critical components such as chips, batteries, displays and wiring often come from multiple countries, with China playing a major role in both sourcing and assembly.

Three tech items you should buy now

With prices likely to rise as new tariffs take hold, some electronics are smarter buys now than later.

The items most at risk are those heavily reliant on Chinese components or with historically tight profit margins, products in which manufacturers have little room to absorb added costs.

If you’ve been debating an upgrade, here are the categories to prioritize before prices start creeping up.

1. Smartphones

If you’re wondering whether to grab that new iPhone before tariffs take effect, the answer is yes — especially if you’re due for an upgrade.

Smartphones are one of the most globally integrated products on the market. Tariffs could affect not just iPhones and Galaxies but also budget-friendly Android phones that often depend on supply chains in other countries.

Some retailers might offer back-to-school promotions or trade-in credits to ease the sticker shock, but prices could quietly start to creep up this fall, especially as new models are released. If your current phone is hanging by a thread, now’s the time to shop.

2. Gaming consoles

Game consoles have been tariff-sensitive for years, and this round is no different.

While Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have tried to shift some manufacturing outside China, many of their components are still subject to tariffs. That means your next Xbox, PlayStation or Switch (and even some of the accessories) could get pricier.

If you’ve got kids eyeing a console for Christmas, or you’re a gamer planning to upgrade, locking in a price now might save you money.

With demand often spiking in the fall, waiting too long could also mean dealing with stock shortages on top of higher prices.

3. Laptops and tablets

Entry-level laptops and budget tablets could be among the first to reflect new tariffs. These devices often compete on price, which means manufacturers might not have much room to absorb increased costs.

Even if you don’t need one for school, a new laptop or tablet for remote work, travel or family use could be worth grabbing before the summer ends.

Look for deals from big-box stores and tech retailers in early August, which might be your last chance at pre‑tariff prices.

What can wait: Smart TVs and streaming devices

Here’s one category where you can relax a bit: smart TVs. Many televisions are now assembled in countries such as Mexico, Vietnam and South Korea, which are not subject to the upcoming tariffs.

Even those using Chinese components have largely adjusted pricing in the past few years in response to previous trade shifts.

The best deals on TVs and streaming devices such as Rokus and Fire Sticks tend to land in late November during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Unless your current setup just died or you’re outfitting a new space, it’s smart to wait until fall sales roll around.

Smart timing can help you avoid higher prices

Tariffs don’t always cause dramatic overnight price jumps, but they do apply pressure to supply chains, and those effects eventually reach your wallet.

If you’ve been meaning to buy a new phone, gaming console or laptop, it might be wise to shop sooner rather than later.

On the other hand, if you're eyeing a new TV or smart home device, you’ve got time, and some better deals could show up later in the year.

With a little strategy and smart timing, you can still save money and avoid paying more as new tariffs take effect.

Kiplinger Personal Finance Magazine has taken the time to assess how you can find deals this year on investments, groceries, electronics, clothing, cars and travel, as well as how to take advantage of credit card perks — with a special emphasis on finding deals for products and services most prone to rising prices as the trade war evolves. You’ll likely find the best deals on smartphones, TVs, laptops, tablets and other gadgets by shopping during retail holidays.

Discounts of up to 50% on electronics are possible around Labor Day, says Louis Ramirez, deals editor-in-chief for tech-review website Tom’s Guide.

Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday and New Year’s sales are good times to shop for electronics, too.

You might also consider trading in your used device when you make a purchase. In addition to tariff-related price increases on new electronics, consumers will likely see a rise in the trade-in values for used devices, says Ramirez.

The trade-in value depends on the age, model and condition of your current device and varies widely; you can get as much as $800 to $1,000 or as little as $12 to $40 for your old device.

Devices from some brands retain their value longer than others. Laptops and tablets that are more than five years old often have minimal trade-in value.

But Apple devices tend to retain some value for five to seven years, says Ramirez.

Check out these devices

Shopping for previous-generation devices can be a great way to lock in low prices on quality electronics.

If you’re in the market for a new laptop or tablet, consider buying the 2024 MacBook Air (recently available for $800 at Best Buy) or the 2024 iPad Air (recently available for $499 at Walmart), rather than the 2025 models, which sell for $999 and $599, respectively.

Alternatively, opt for an AI-driven laptop. These laptops use software powered by artificial intelligence to enhance performance, user experience and functionality.

They’ve had a lukewarm reception from consumers, many of whom remain comfortable with PCs that don’t have these built-in AI features. So you can find significant markdowns on some AI laptops.

Acer, Dell, HP and Samsung are all lowering prices on their AI-driven models, says Ramirez.

For example, the Dell XPS 9350 Laptop with Copilot+ was recently available at Best Buy for $999, or $400 off its original price.

If you’re in the market for a TV, big-box stores such as Best Buy may be your best bet, especially around Labor Day.

Typically, you can get as much as $2,000 off select big-screen TVs from LG, Samsung and other brands during Best Buy’s Labor Day sale.

Amazon has also been known to sell smart TVs, such as the Insignia 24-inch F20 Series HD Fire TV, for as little as $65 on Labor Day.

If you use Google smart home devices, like security cameras, speakers or doorbells, you may have noticed more glitches and technical hiccups lately. From delayed responses to outright device failures, users across the country are reporting a growing list of frustrating issues.

These problems aren't isolated. A surge of complaints has surfaced online, prompting a wave of discussion among Google Nest users. Many describe devices that are no longer responding to voice commands, randomly turning on or off or simply failing to perform basic tasks.

The situation has become widespread enough that Google publicly acknowledged the issue and promised a fix. For now, users are left waiting, navigating workarounds while hoping the tech giant delivers on its promise to restore stability.

Users report widespread problems with Google Nest devices

In a recent Reddit thread, Google smart home device users report numerous similar issues with Google Nest devices. Google Nest encompasses a wide range of smart home products, including those previously marketed under the Google Home branding.

Google Nest devices include security cameras, speakers, doorbells, thermostats, doorbells, routers and smart speakers. Those products can interact with each other and with Google Assistant, creating a smart home ecosystem that you can control with your voice.

At least, supposedly. Commenters on the Reddit thread describe devices that appear to be degrading and losing voice control functionality as they age. Users report issues where devices can no longer understand their commands or don’t respond to them at all.

In some cases, when asked to turn off the lights, the devices turn on a fan. Alarms continue sounding in other rooms after users have turned them off. Audio devices and smart speakers unexplainably stop playing, and TVs turn off mid-use.

The issues have gotten so bad that several users report turning off and disconnecting their devices entirely.

Why Google’s smart home glitches go beyond inconvenience

The issues many users are encountering with their Google devices are inconvenient and frustrating. But for some users, who rely on Google devices for their health and safety, the malfunctioning devices pose a real risk.

For example, some individuals set Google's alarm function to remind them to take medication on time. A missed reminder could mean a missed dose of medication, negatively impacting their health.

Others may use a Google smart speaker as a backup safety device to call if a fall occurs. Since smart speakers can be operated by voice, an individual who has fallen could potentially use the speaker to call an existing contact for help.

Google responds to growing user complaints

The discussion around Google smart home device issues caught the attention of the tech giant, and Anis Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Google Nest, addressed the concerns via two posts on X.

"Hey everyone, I want to acknowledge the recent feedback about Google Assistant reliability on our home devices. I sincerely apologize for what you’re experiencing and feeling!" wrote Kattukaran on the first post.

He followed up with a second post, writing, "We hear you loud and clear and are committed to getting this right – and making sure we have a long term solution that provides better reliability and capability. We have been actively working on major improvements for sometime and will have more to share in the fall."

The fact that Google acknowledged the issues and is working on a solution is good news for Google Nest users.

Tips for using Google smart home devices until a fix arrives

If you're having trouble with your Google Nest and Google Home devices, you can try troubleshooting the devices by restarting them, making sure they're connected to WiFi and confirming that you've installed all available software updates.

Since Google devices are having issues, though, basic troubleshooting may only get you so far. The Google Nest Help page offers some additional tips, and there's also an option to contact Google at the bottom of the page if you need more help.

If you can't get your devices working and you rely on them for safety, consider buying alternative devices to use until Google releases more information and a fix.

For example, if you use your Google Nest devices as a medication alarm, set medication reminder alarms on your smartphone, or you can buy a designated medication reminder alarm.

If you're worried about being able to get help after a fall, there are many medical alert devices that can call your contacts or emergency responders if you can't respond or make the call yourself. When shopping for medical alert devices, consider the type of device that's best for your needs, whether that's a pendant you can wear around your neck, a device that clips onto your belt or a wristwatch.

Be sure to carefully review all of the associated costs, too; many devices require a subscription to receive the monitoring services that would call 911 for you in an emergency, but some devices don't require a subscription. Make sure that the device you choose will work with your home WiFi or your cell service provider.

The fact that Google is working on a fix is encouraging, and hopefully they quickly identify a way to restore functionality to all of their devices. Until then, users may have to find ways to get by without the full functionality of their smart home devices.

Looking ahead for Google Nest users

It's a good sign that Google has acknowledged the issues and is working on a solution. Still, if your devices play an important role in your daily routine or safety, it’s worth exploring temporary alternatives.

Backup alarms, manual routines or even switching to another smart device brand can help bridge the gap until Google rolls out its improvements later this year.

Instead, these companies lease coverage from major networks like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. MVNOs often lease coverage from multiple networks, which allows them to provide strong signals and speeds to customers in many locations.

Though MVNOs get the same speeds as customers who have plans directly with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, those networks’ direct customers will receive priority over MVNO customers.

For example, at peak usage times, a Verizon customer will be prioritized and will receive top speeds, while an MVNO customer using the Verizon network may experience reduced speeds.

MVNOs offer cheaper plans than what you’ll find from major networks, and those plans have fewer frills. Many plans limit data usage and cap speeds on data. When buying an MVNO plan, you may only be able to choose from a few phones, while customers buying directly from a large network will have a wider range of phones.

At the same time, MVNOs can be an appealing choice if you’re looking to save money on your cell phone bill. Most MVNOs require no contract, so you can pay monthly and cancel your service anytime without cancellation fees.

The newly announced Trump Mobile plan costs $47.45 per month and includes unlimited talk, text and data. International calling is available to 100 destinations, and there’s no credit check required to buy a plan. Since there’s no contract, you can cancel your service at any time.

According to the Trump Mobile website, the service works with most major phones, so you may be able to use your current device. Preorders of the T1 Phone are also available; the phone costs $499 and will be available in September 2025. The website states that the T1 Phone will be made in America.

Potential Trump Mobile drawbacks

While the prospect of a $499 smartphone and an affordable plan sounds appealing, there are potential red flags to be aware of. Essential plan details are missing, including the networks that Trump Mobile uses.

The terms of use page states that the service is “powered by Liberty Mobile Wireless LLC.” Trump Mobile doesn’t specify whether customers will receive 4G LTE or 5G speeds, and the exact coverage really isn’t defined.

The plan website states that international calling is available to 100 destinations, but when you read the fine print, you’ll find that time caps – some as low as 10 minutes – apply to most of those destinations.

Originally, the website stated that the phone would be made in the USA, and there was question about whether that was possible or true. According to Newsweek, a phone made in the United States would probably cost over $1,000, double the T1’s cost, since smartphone technology largely relies on international supply chains. The Trump Mobile website has since been updated to state that the phone will be "designed and built in the USA."

If you’re thinking of signing up, take a few minutes to review the Trump Mobile privacy policy so you’re familiar with its terms. According to the policy, Trump Mobile’s AI systems can collect data, including the pages you visit, links you click on, your IP address and location information.

How to evaluate if a switch to a budget wireless carrier makes sense

MVNOs are appealing because of their low costs, and they may make financial sense for some individuals who don’t heavily use data or need premium speeds. But before you plan to switch, review your phone usage and ask yourself the following questions:

• Are you paying for data you don’t use? Data plans can quickly drive up your wireless bill. If you have large portions of unused data left over each month, you might be able to save by choosing a budget plan with a lower data limit.
• Do you need premium speeds or in-person customer support? If you need reliably fast speeds, a budget carrier might not be the best choice, since you could experience lower speeds during peak times. Some budget carriers offer limited or no in-person customer support, so consider the availability of that support when choosing a carrier.
• Is your current carrier offering loyalty perks? Review your current wireless statement and see if you’re getting any loyalty perks, like discounts on your bills or exclusive offers. If you leave your current carrier and then decide to go back to them in the future, you’ll have to re-qualify for those perks.

Overnight this week, you may have noticed your iPhone changed. Along with changes in the appearance of app icons and certain Apple features like the Notes or Calendar app, the latest Apple iPhone update also included some critical updates for security.

Because of this, if you have an iPhone or iPad that hasn't automatically gotten the latest iOS update, you should make sure to manually set it up as soon as possible. The steps to do so are included in further detail below.

iOS 18 (that's the 18th version of the iPhone "operating system") first became available in September, around when the new iPhone 16 was announced. It included new features like updates to the Photos app and how messages appear, as well as an introduction to Apple Intelligence — artificial intelligence features, that is — for iPhone 15s and 16s.

Last week, Apple announced an update to the operating system, recommending users update to iOS 18.1.1 or, for iPads, iPadOS 18.1.1. That new update specifically addresses security bugs found in the first edition of the operating system. According to our friends at Tom's Guide, iOS 18.1.1 has critical security fixes that stop possible "arbitrary code execution" and "cross-site scripting attacks."

While I'm not going to pretend to understand exactly what that means, I do know it means protecting your systems. And, as Kiplinger has said many times before, with more of our financial lives moving online and to apps on our phones, it's vital to keep those systems protected from possible attacks, whether it's direct hacking into your accounts or presenting opportunities for identity theft and fraud.

Other ways to protect your finances from cybersecurity threats include preemptively freezing your credit and using password managers like Nordpass or 1Password.

If you're not already an iPhone user or if you're considering upgrading to a newer version, this week is a good time to look into it with various Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals going on.

The FBI's Denver office sent out a message warning of the safety of public phone charging stations. These stations, the office said, could carry risks to your security and safety. 

"Bad actors have figured out ways to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices," the FBI Denver office said on Twitter in early April. 

Instead, the FBI said, you should bring your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet, rather than a charging station. This warning extends to airports, hotels and shopping centers, the FBI said. 

FBI Denver confirmed to Kiplinger nothing new spurred this message. Rather, it was a message they wanted to regularly share with people. With that in mind, here are some safety issues to know about public device charging stations. 

What to Know About Charging Devices Safely

The Federal Communications Commission refers to possible risks of public USB charging stations as "juice jacking." What can happen is that a thief could install malware on a USB port that can access a device when it's plugged in, the FCC has said. 

Malware could then allow a criminal to export data and passwords, potentially giving them access to your online accounts. Something like this could also happen, the FCC said, through public Wi-Fi networks. 

To Keep Your Devices Safe at Phone Charging Stations:

• Bring your own charging cable if you are traveling somewhere. 
• Plug into a typical power outlet, rather than making use of public USB charging stations where you use a wire left there.
• You can also use a charging-only cable or be more mobile with a portable charger or external battery.

With so much of our personal lives going onto phones — including use of banking and investment apps to access our accounts — this is an easy way to stay safe when you're on the move. More than 50,000 people reported being the victim of a personal data breach in 2021, according to an FBI Internet Crime Report released in late March, resulting in losses of more than $515 million; malware resulted in reported losses of more than $49.2 million.

Fixed cameras and sensors can only go so far in minding your property. In fact, they can’t go anywhere at all, being screwed into the wall. That’s where the flying Ring Always Home Cam from Amazon Prime comes in. But in order to get one, you have to have something unusual from a retailer that will generally sell just about anything to anybody: an invitation.

The Ring Always Home Cam is a camera-equipped drone that follows a guidepath the homeowner sets up. It allows you to see what’s going on throughout the house (there are exceptions; we’ll get to those). You can see live whether someone left the stove burner on or if the toilet's running – and even spot the bad guys if someone broke in. It has LED lights to illuminate the scene should you be checking the palace out at night.

This drone-for-home meshes nicely with Amazon’s pending deal to buy iRobot, the maker of the Roomba home vacuum and cleaning devices. Shall we dub Ring’s Always Home Cam the Roomba of the sky?

Another too-cool-to-be-true feature? When the contact sensor or motion detectors on your Ring Alarm security system are triggered, like a superhero, the Always Home Cam rises from its dock and flies toward danger – or whatever set off your alarm system. And if you’re concerned about privacy, Amazon says the Always Home Cam only records when it's on its designated flight path or when triggered by the Ring Alarm system. You teach the Always Home Cam its flight path (look for the video). When you’re home, the camera stays hidden in the Always Home Cam dock, recharging and readying itself for the next mission.

The cost of the Ring Always Home Cam: $249.99. And about the invitation-only ability to buy it: I let Amazon know I was interested in buying an Always Home Cam. I got an email from Amazon with a link back to a survey explaining that quantities of this drone are limited and not everyone who requests an invitation will be invited. Amazon wanted to know how many Ring devices I own (none); if I have a home security system (I do); whether I had a Ring Protect subscription that would allow me to use advanced Ring features (no); whether I had frequent visitors in the form of children or pets (no); and the square footage of my home (none of their business). I didn’t go any further as I’m pretty sure the Ring Always Home Cam only works with Ring devices (let’s get to work on this, Amazon).

Ring is one of the top name-brand companies that Amazon has scooped up in recent years. Others include that pending deal to buy iRobot; the Whole Foods upscale supermarket chain; MGM Studios (as well as the IMDB streaming service and internet movie database); healthcare service firm One Medical; and shoe retailer Zappos.

Perhaps iRobot will help tune the Always Home Cam. In its survey, Amazon also noted the setup of the Always Home Cam would need to be configured if my home had:

• floor-to-ceiling glass windows doors or mirrors
• floors with different colors and materials
• chandeliers, pendants, beams or hanging ceiling fixtures
• ceilings greater than 12 feet high
• sunken rooms or sloped ceilings
• narrow doorways or hallways less than 3 feet wide
• concentrated air flow from air purifiers, fans, or air conditioners

These items aren’t quite kryptonite for this hovering superhero, but they reveal the limitations of indoor drone flight.

The Always Home Cam comes from Amazon’s Day 1 Editions, products Amazon releases to select customers willing to provide feedback and be involved with development.

When The Jetsons aired in 1962, a wisecracking robotic maid named Rosey seemed like something out of a science fiction novel. Fast-forward 60 years, and a robotic vacuum—with less sass—is just one of many smart-technology devices people have in their homes.

“Virtually everything in your home has the potential to become smarter,” says Ibrahim Mawri, a smart-technology expert and the founder of Electric Ride Lab, an education platform focused on green energy. “From your thermostat to your lights, everything around you could benefit from an upgrade to the latest technologies.”

Brian Harrington’s house is a prime example. Harrington, a product marketing manager for a bitcoin company, outfitted his home in Menifee, Calif., with an array of smart devices, including smart locks, cameras, a Roomba, an automatic pet feeder and a smart thermostat. He’s among a growing horde of smart home enthusiasts. More than half of U.S. consumers purchased at least one smart device for their home during the pandemic, a Xiaomi survey found.

Fortunately for budget-conscious consumers, smart home technology is becoming more affordable. “When I started covering smart tech in 2015, most smart home devices were luxury goods,” says David Priest, a smart-technology review editor at CNET.com. “Now the average consumer can purchase smart lighting for under $10 and even video doorbells for under $100.”

Smart tech can increase a home’s value, and some smart home products help trim utility bills. Seven out of 10 home buyers say they’re looking for a smart home, and 78% say they’re willing to pay more for a house with smart devices already installed, according to a recent Security.org survey.

Lighting. A smart light bulb is a great product for smart home newbies, says Nicholas Millette, a smart home expert at The Home Depot, and the bulbs are cheap and easy to set up. A typical smart bulb lets you adjust a bulb’s brightness from your phone and program the light to turn on or off at certain times of the day. Brian Davis, a Philadelphia real estate investor and founder of SparkRental, a landlord-support software company, uses a Teckin smart bulb (starts at $11.50) to set the mood for intimate dinners at home. “When I cook a nice meal for my wife, I switch it to a low brightness, warm white setting,” he says.

Thermostat. A smart thermostat gives you the ability to regulate your home’s heating and cooling and set temperature schedules using a mobile app, enabling you to maximize energy efficiency. It can also shave money off your home’s heating and cooling bills. Larry Snider, the vice president of operations at Casago Vacation Rentals, installed a Google Nest Learning Thermostat (about $249) in his Scottsdale, Ariz., home last year. “It’s been a game changer,” he says. “It optimizes the temperature in my home by regulating the AC and heat in the most effective way possible so that I’m not wasting electricity.” Snider says the device, which is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, saves him about $17 to $19 a month on energy costs.

Plugs. Wi-Fi-enabled smart plugs and outlets let you turn power on and off remotely. That means no more fiddling with switches when you’re ready to turn off your Christmas tree lights before you go to sleep, Millette says. Get started with the Wyze Plug ($20 for a two-pack), which not only works with the Wyze mobile app but also responds to voice commands through Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Robotic vacuum. Less expensive than many competitors, the Roborock S7 ($650) is Priest’s pick for a robotic vacuum. Like a Roomba, it roams your home on its own, with no assistance needed. It scrubs floors with ultrasound to remove stubborn dirt, such as wine stains and muddy paw prints. It also cleans carpets without making them damp. The machine lasts up to three hours on a single charge, and it responds to voice commands via Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. Alex Smith, a homeowner in Fremont, Calif., swears by his Roborock, which, he says “has been a major help going around picking up all the dust, dirt, debris and pet hair that make a mess at my place.”

Refrigerator. The Samsung Family Hub 26.5-cubic-foot French Door Refrigerator ($2,800) has a lot of bells and whistles. With Amazon’s Alexa built in, this Wi-Fi-connected model features a touchscreen display that allows you to stream music and TV shows. It also has a camera that lets you see the inside of your fridge, so you can check its contents via a mobile app while you’re grocery shopping. It even recommends recipes based on the ingredients that you have.

Dishwasher. Equipped with special jets that clean hard-to-reach interiors of water bottles, vases and more, the 24-inch GE Profile Dishwasher ($1,449) connects to a mobile app, which lets you monitor the cycle status, check rinse-aid levels and reorder detergent.

Faucet. If you don’t mind a bit of a splurge, replace your ordinary kitchen faucet with the Moen 7864EVBL Sleek Smart Touchless Kitchen Faucet ($519), and you’ll be able to turn on your faucet in four ways: by voice, by motion sensor, through an app or manually. It even follows voice commands for temperature and measurements—by saying, for instance, “Alexa, ask Moen to dispense one cup of hot water.”

Countertop oven. The Breville Smart Oven Air Convection BOV900BSSUSC ($400) is a tricked-out smart oven with more than a dozen cooking functions, including an air-frying mode, a dehydrate option and a super-convection setting that reduces cooking time by up to 30%. Its Element iQ System uses algorithms to steer power to where and when it’s needed, delivering precise cooking temperatures in the right places.

TV. There’s certainly no shortage of smart TVs on the market. CNET’s Priest suggests giving the 55-inch TCL 6-Series Roku Smart TV ($750) a close look. He says this model boasts “a bunch of high-end features for the price,” including 4K resolution, voice control and a game mode with great image quality.

Smart Hub. If you have multiple smart devices, you may want to purchase a smart hub. A smart hub is like a mission control center for your home’s smart devices. It ties everything together using one system, enabling you to command all your gadgets from one central interface, such as a touchscreen device or a mobile app.

Some voice assistants double as smart hubs. For example, the Amazon Echo (4th generation)—the top choice of Tom’s Guide—costs $100, while the Google Nest Hub ($60 for the second-generation model) is CNET’s top pick. Other smart hubs, such as the AEOTEC Smart Home Hub ($135), allow you to use voice commands with compatible voice assistants.

Some hubs have interactive features, such as touchscreen controls, while others are no frills. Bells and whistles such as built-in speakers and USB ports can also vary. And some hubs have a limit on how many devices they can support.

Most hubs are compatible with iOS and Android operating systems, but double-check before purchasing a hub to make sure it works with your smartphone and smart gadgets. Read customer reviews to gauge how easily a hub can be set up.

Mattress. A smart bed utilizes innovative features and functionality to provide a better night’s sleep. Some smart mattresses, though, cost $10,000 or more. The Saatva Solaire ($2,895 for a queen size) is an affordable option that ticks a lot of boxes. The mattress is topped with layers of latex and gel-infused foam that provide pressure-relieving support. It has 50 firmness settings and allows each partner to conveniently adjust the firmness of their half of the bed. The company provides a 365-night home trial.

Pillow. A smart pillow such as the EMOOR ($270) can also help you sleep better. Its built-in sensors monitor your heart and respiratory rates, sleeping hours, and toss-and-turn behaviors. That data feeds into the Sleepace app, which scores your rest and provides tips to get more zzz’s.

Headphones. SleepPhones ($100) are headphones in a soft headband that play audio via Bluetooth, allowing you to wind down while listening to your favorite tunes, soothing meditation sounds or an audiobook without disturbing your partner. This cord-free wearable, designed to be worn while you sleep, reduces ambient noise, including sound from traffic, conversations and snoring.

Showerhead. Liven up your shower routine with the Kohler Moxie Showerhead ($129). The showerhead has a wireless, waterproof speaker that lets you listen to music, hear the news and more while you shower. Its Amazon Alexa–enabled showerhead removes easily for charging.

Scale. Smart scales measure a whole lot more than just your weight. CNET’s top-rated model is the QardioBase2 ($123). Each measurement gets sent to a mobile app that lets you view your weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass, water weight and bone-density percentage. The app also lets you set goals, and it calculates weekly targets to keep you motivated.

Toilet. The Woodbridge B0990S Smart Toilet ($1,522) has a built-in bidet. It has other nifty features, too, such as a motion-activated open-and-close lid, automatic flushing, a heated seat and a night light. It comes with a remote that can be wall mounted.

Washer and dryer. With the Samsung WF45R6300AW and DVE45R6300W ($1,099 each), you get a stackable washer and dryer with the latest smart technology at a reasonable price, says Kimberly Holland, who tested the product for The Spruce. The Wi-Fi-enabled washer allows you to use your phone to control wash cycles and get end-of-cycle alerts. The dryer offers the same options for drying cycles, and it has multi-steam technology that smooths away wrinkles.

Mold detector. Mold can cause a variety of health problems, such as stuffy nose, wheezing and red skin—and sometimes more severe reactions. But not all mold infestations are easy to detect, because some mold has no odor. The Airthings Wave Mini ($80) can help spot warning signs of mold by monitoring a room’s humidity and air quality. It’s best placed on an external wall, near the floor.

Water-leak sensor. This smart device can help prevent water damage by alerting you the moment that water is detected. The Proteus AQUO ($99) sends alerts by e-mail or text message. It’s easy to install—you simply plug the sensor into a wall outlet and connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi network.

Robotic lawn mower. Hate the hassle of mowing your lawn? A robotic mower will do the work for you, but those smart mowers don’t come cheap. If you have a small lawn (up to 2,700 square feet), the Gardena Robotic Mower Sileno City ($597) might fit the bill. A boundary wire you bury or install with stakes (included) indicates which area of the garden should be mowed. Although this mower lacks GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities, it cuts grass evenly, and the company says that it can mow “small and complex lawns.” It uses collision sensors to ensure it operates safely, without causing damage to your garden or flower bed.

Grill. Up your barbecue game with an outdoor smart grill, such as the Weber Genesis EX-325s ($1,179). This three-burner natural gas grill has integrated smart technology that sends notifications to your phone when it’s time to flip burgers, steaks and other grub according to your desired doneness.

Security camera. Homeowners like Todd Saunders have discovered the inexpensive way to increase security. The CEO of FlooringStores, a site that matches consumers with flooring companies, uses a Ring security camera ($200) to see when packages are delivered to his home in Port Chester, N.Y. “I’ve definitely cut down on instances of porch piracy,” he says.

Door lock. The first thing Ashton Robertson and her husband did after buying a house in Corvallis, Ore., in March was install a smart lock on the front door that she could lock and unlock using her phone. She purchased the August Smart Lock ($199), a product that SafeWise.com’s safety and security expert Alina Bradford owns. “It works with the deadbolt you already have, so it has foolproof installation,” Bradford says. The August keypad costs an additional $60.

Sprinkler controller. Keep your lawn lush with a smart sprinkler controller, a gadget that lets you control your watering schedule. Consider the Rachio 3 ($196 for a eight-zone unit), an easy-to-use sprinkler controller that adjusts watering based on weather forecasts. Its internal software can also create tailored watering schedules based on your lawn’s specific needs, factoring in your soil, plants and sun exposure.

Yes, the 2021 edition is arriving a little earlier than usual, but there’s a reason for that. The supply chain disruption, chip shortages, and transportation woes that have been so disruptive over the past year continue. That means popular products may be more difficult to find than usual, and retailers are warning that some may quickly sell out when holiday shopping kicks off.

To put that in perspective, a full year after launch, many gamers are still struggling to get their hands on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X game console.

However, in a Chromebook, that does the job. When I reviewed the Chromebook Duet, I could easily have a dozen Chrome tabs open without slowdown. It’s equipped with a built-in webcam for video conferencing. I was really impressed by Lenovo’s inclusion of a 1080p IPS touchscreen display (many entry level Chromebooks still have 720p displays), and the 10 hours of battery life I averaged.

Gaming was already big, but in the pandemic, popularity soared. And then kept growing. Online PC gaming platform Steam just keeps breaking its own record for concurrent users. Gaming laptops have been incredibly popular because they allow PC gaming from wherever you can carve out the space to sit down, and they can do double-duty for school. But to play PC games, you really do need a gaming laptop, though — a standard computer lacks the graphics processing unit (GPU) to be able to handle popular triple-A games.

You can actually get a pretty capable gaming laptop for well under $1,000. Acer’s Nitro 5 series has been an affordable gaming laptop leader for years. There are dozens of models to choose from, but this year’s crop includes the Nitro 5 (AN515-55-53E5).

For $799, you get a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3050 GPU capable of real-time ray tracing, a 15.6-inch 1080p display with a 144Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6, and ultra-fast NVMe storage.

RAM and storage are both on the low end but usable (8GB and 256GB respectively), but can be easily and inexpensively upgraded at any time thanks to free slots.

Once again, the M1 MacBook Air tops our list as the best value in laptops. We’re expecting a new version in 2022, but that one is undoubtedly going to go a little more upscale.

The current M1 MacBook Air — released last November — is a powerful performer thanks to Apple’s custom-designed M1 CPU. It features a silent, fanless design, a premium machined aluminum enclosure (in gold, silver or space gray), a very nice 13.3-inch Liquid Retina display, and battery life of up to 18 hours. It runs macOS instead of Windows, but there are macOS or cloud versions of most popular applications including Microsoft Office, so that shouldn’t be a big issue for most users.

With a starting price of $999 ($899 if you qualify for educational pricing), there’s no better value to be found in a laptop.

The pandemic has made connected digital photo frames popular as a way to create a digital connection with people less comfortable with laptops, tablets or similar equipment. This year’s suggestion is the second-generation Google Nest Hub.

This device is truly a great value. Priced at $99.99, it’s a smart speaker with a built-in 7-inch touchscreen. Use it to play music, stream videos, voice control smart home devices, and take video calls. And when not doing all that, the display can double as a digital photo frame as well, playing a slide show of your favorite snaps from Google Photos.

Last year, the TCL 4-Series 4K Roku TV made this list as the best value in TVs, with a $229.99 starting price. This year, TCL is on the list again (the company is on a roll), but with the 6-Series, which has a $949.99 starting price.

Why the big price difference, and should you pay it?

First, sky-high demand for TVs combined with parts shortages and higher shipping costs have pushed prices considerably higher for all TVs this year. The TCL model that went for $229.99 last year is priced at $349.99 this year. That was also a 43-inch TV, where the smallest 6-Series is a 55-inch model ($499.99 for that size in the 4-Series).

The TCL 6-Series is equipped with advanced technology including a quantum dot display and a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports features like Dolby Atmos surround sound and Dolby Vision HDR. It delivers an excellent viewing experience and with its THX certified game mode, it is consistently rated as one of the best TVs for gaming with the new Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X game consoles. It’s a tremendous value in a TV and well worth the higher price tag — which is still well below the competition.

Smart watches like the Apple Watch continue to gain popularity, but the reality is that many people who buy these are primarily using them for their health and fitness-tracking capabilities, and those you can get for less.

The Fitbit Charge 5 is an attractive-looking fitness tracker, with an aluminum case (in a choice of colors), swappable bands, a vibrant, always-on AMOLED touchscreen display, built-in GPS, and seven-day battery life. It offers a full array of health and fitness tracking capabilities including a heart rate sensor, ECG, oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels, breathing rate, and sleep monitoring.

It can also show notifications from an iPhone or Android smartphone.

If you’re shopping for someone who wants to be on top of all aspects of their health and fitness, the Fitbit Charge 5 is a great value at $100 less than Apple’s entry-level Apple Watch SE.

In testing, I found the PuroPro Hybrid ANC wireless headphones deliver on the noise cancellation front, with two levels of ANC. They are comfortable and modern-looking, and offer an enjoyable music listening experience with plenty of energy. It’s on a level comparable with more expensive offerings. But there’s a twist. These headphones have a built in volume limiter to prevent hearing damage, making them ideal for those who habitually crank their music to 11. Odds are, they’ll never even notice.

It should come as no surprise that Sony makes great headphones. When I reviewed the company’s WH-1000XM3 wireless headphones with ANC, I wore them to a water park on a hot summer day and parked myself in a chair just feet from a roller coaster track. With ANC active, there was nothing but silence despite hundreds of screaming kids and a thundering coaster hurtling past. Music sounds fantastic and spatial audio in the 360 Reality Audio format is supported. Battery life is excellent, at up to 38 hours.

Sony managed to top those with the WH-1000XM4 headphones, which scooped a CES 2021 Innovation Award. Voice call performance is improved, and they gain multi-point Bluetooth so they can be connected to two devices simultaneously (useful when working from home). ANC somehow gets even better and they gain DSEE Extreme upscaling, a feature that makes lossy files like MP3s sound better.

While there’s a strong case for Apple’s AirPods Pro headphones in this category, Sony’s WH-1000XM4s simply offer a better value.

One of the most important factors in terms of how good earbuds are going to sound is their fit. Without a tight seal, bass in particular drops off, and even the best buds sound tinny. Of course if they don’t fit properly, they are also unlikely to stay in place. Sometimes all the tips and wings in the world just won’t do it.

Ultimate Ears drove this point home when I tested the company’s UE 18+ CX earbuds. These are custom-molded buds that fit like a glove and sound phenomenal — but they cost as much as a mortgage payment. Fortunately, the company has adapted that custom-molding technology in the consumer UE Fits wireless earbuds.

An app walks you through the fitting process and after less than a minute you have custom-molded wireless earbuds that fit perfectly. The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is a top pick for 2021. In its second generation, it adds support for Dolby Atmos 3D audio. It lacks upward-firing drivers, but two arrays are dedicated to reproducing overhead and surround effects. It’s not quite as effective as the Sonos Arc soundbar, which is equipped with actual upward-firing drivers — but that model retails for $899. The Sonos Beam 2 is pretty convincing while saving money that could be put toward a Sonos Sub wireless subwoofer for true movie theatre rumble.

The Sonos mobile app is required to set up the Beam (Gen 2), but you don’t need to be invested in the Sonos ecosystem to use this soundbar. In fact, it supports Wi-Fi music streamed via Apple AirPlay 2. Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is available in matte black or matte white finishes.

I test a lot of smart lighting solutions. Color-changing bulbs and LED strips are fine, but I’ve been a fan of Nanoleaf’s interlocking. wall-mounted smart light panels since the first version was released in 2016. I currently have around 50 Nanoleaf panels on my office walls. Nanoleaf’s Canvas took the best-smart smarting lighting honors in the 2020 gift guide.

Its 8-inch display is the largest in its class, and the E Ink Carta 1200 touchscreen is razor-sharp at 300 PPI. Kobo pioneered temperature-changing side-lighting with its ComfortLight PRO system that adjusts the lighting colour temperature and brightness to reduce eyestrain. It is IPX8 water resistant and can survive a dunking in three feet of water. The Sage offers 12 fonts and 50 font styles for complete customization of the reading experience.

Kobo e-readers also include integrated Overdrive support, which makes it easy to borrow eBooks from local libraries.

Finally, what might be the most popular gift on the 2021 list: the best gaming laptop. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 isn’t the most expensive gaming laptop you can buy. Far from it. But it offers a near-perfect balance. Between cost and performance, weight and battery life, performance and portability. This is the gaming laptop that does it all, and does so without feeling like compromises are being made.

Brace for the letters and numbers (the gamers will appreciate them):

Apple finally appears poised to get back to a normal product launch schedule, with the company announcing a reveal event for 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 14. That means a host of new products – including the much-expected iPhone 13 – are likely to be announced in very short order.

This follows a turbulent past year or so that saw the technology giant weather multiple product setbacks amid global supply chain disruptions, including an unprecedented delay in launching the 5G iPhone 12 series. Instead of its usual September launch event, Apple didn't unveil its line of iPhone 12s until Oct. 13.

Despite ongoing challenges – including a continued global chip shortage – Apple has kept busy in 2021. The company has introduced several new products including AirTag trackers, refreshed iPad Pros, and new multi-colored, M1-powered 24-inch iMacs.

And come Sept. 14, the company is widely expected to unveil a full slate of compelling new product releases.

Here are the new Apple products we believe will be announced at the Sept. 14 event (or a potential second event in the coming months). This list includes sure bets such as the iPhone 13, as well as longshots like an all-new MacBook Air.

Apple still derives nearly half of its total revenue from iPhone sales. Also, iPhone use helps to drive the company's increasingly vital Services revenue.

Thus, without a doubt, the single-biggest product launch for Apple in 2021 will be the iPhone 13.

2020's iPhone 12 was a massive release; 5G support appeared for the first time, triggering what several analysts deemed an "upgrade supercycle." This year's model is likely to be more modest in terms of new technology and design changes (what used to be called an "S" release), but don't underestimate the demand for Apple's latest and greatest smartphone.

Just like it did last year, Apple is expected to debut two iPhone 13 models:

• 6.1-inch iPhone 13
• 5.4-inch iPhone 13 Mini

It also should release two iPhone Pro models:

• 6.1-inch iPhone Pro
• 6.5-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max

The big selling points for 2021 are expected to be 120Hz ProMotion displays for the iPhone Pro models, camera improvements across the board, a slightly smaller FaceID notch, support for faster mmWave 5G technology, larger batteries and Wi-Fi 6E support. As always, different case colors are a possibility.

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said he expected a "normal" launch for the iPhone 13, which suggested a return to a mid-September event to announce the new models. Sure enough, Apple's announcement of a Sept. 14 unveiling puts the iPhone maker back on track.

Now that Google parent Alphabet owns Fitbit and has also released its new Wear OS 3 smartwatch platform (with partners including Samsung), the Apple Watch release that should arrive this fall takes on new importance.

Leaked renders for the Apple Watch Series 7 point to a redesign that sees the smartwatch shift from rounded edges to the flat-edged design the company has adopted in recent product releases, including the iPhone 12, iPad Pro and iMac. It appears Apple will keep the existing 44mm and 40mm sizes. However, smaller bezels (the space between the frame and the screen) would mean bigger display sizes for both versions; improved display lamination technology should make them thinner as well.

If Apple is able to shrink the S7 chip as rumored, that would provide more room for a battery, addressing one of the biggest complaints about the Apple Watch: battery life. Regardless of size, expect the new processor to offer faster performance.

We also could see new case colors for the Apple Watch Series 7.

Apple's true wireless earbuds – AirPods – are Apple's unexpected runaway hit. They still dominate the global wireless headphone market, accounting for nearly 50% of sales. Varying estimates peg annual AirPod revenues between $10 billion and $12 billion.

The second-generation AirPods were released in spring 2019, and they are overdue for an update. Rumors about a potential AirPods 3 launch have the buds adopting a design that resembles the more expensive AirPods Pro, including shorter stems and silicone eartips for a more customized fit. The new form factor should also translate into a redesigned charge case.

Better battery life is expected, too, as the current AirPods are now near the bottom of the pack in that respect compared to the competition.

Support for Apple's new 3D Spatial Audio is a possibility.

The entry-level iPad is Apple's most affordable model. The company is widely expected to release a new, ninth-generation version of its low-cost iPad this fall.

Considering its low price point (currently starting at $329), don't expect to see the iPad 9 feature the latest and greatest processors or a major redesign. That means the Touch ID button is likely to remain, while the processor will be bumped up to the A13 or possibly the A14.

Speculation earlier this year had the base storage getting a bump from 32GB to a more useful 64GB, but rising prices for NAND flash memory might make that move too expensive.

If Apple makes the tablet slightly thinner, as rumored, that should also shave an ounce or so off its weight.

Finally, there have been whispers that the iPad 9 might see its starting price drop to $299 – the current price for educational customers. But again, with the current chip shortage raising the price of components, take that rumor with a grain of salt.

Apple last refreshed the iPad Mini in March 2019. With other iPads receiving annual updates these days, a new version of the iPad Mini is long overdue.

If Apple does release an iPad Mini 6, it's expected to be the same approximate size as its predecessor, but with a larger, 8.5-inch display. That would be accomplished by reducing display bezels and going with an all-screen design (losing the Home button in favor of Touch ID on the power button), like the company did most recently with the iPad Air.

Naturally, it should get a faster processor as well, likely an A14 or A15. The Lightning port is expected to be dropped in favor of USB-C.

One rumor has the new iPad Mini tipped to adopt a mini-LED display, using technology first seen in the latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro. That would be a major improvement over its already impressive Retina display, but MacRumors notes that display analyst Ross Young disputed this report.

Other possibilities include a move to Apple's flat-edged design, as well as new case colors.

Apple announced its new, custom-designed M1 processor last fall. With the M1, the company is following the strategy that helped to make the iPhone so successful. By controlling the processor instead of relying on Intel, Apple can now fully optimize performance of its Mac computers, incorporate special features (like the ability to run iOS apps) and control the pace of hardware development.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air were the first Apple laptops to get the M1 chip. They received accolades for increased performance and power efficiency, but they were otherwise unchanged from the Intel versions.

This fall, look for Apple to unveil new MacBook Pro models that incorporate the company's latest silicon (M1X or M2 are frontrunners for the chip name). They are widely expected to adopt a new design, with the slim bezels and flat edges Apple has been using of late.

The new MacBook Pros are expected to come in 14-inch and 16-inch models. Displays might be mini-LED. The MacBook Pro webcam is expected to be upgraded to the 1080p model that was included with the new 24-inch M1 iMac. The controversial Touch Bar is predicted to disappear.

Speaking of controversy: Apple has dealt with more than its share of guff over the decision in 2016 to move the MacBook Pro to all USB-C ports, including for power. The rumor mill has been running hot over the possibility that Apple has given in to user demands, and will be expanding the port selection with the new MacBook Pro models. This could mean adding back an SD card slot, and possibly a USB Type-A port, plus a return to MagSafe charging port instead of USB-C.

The latest version of Apple's processor is expected to deliver a big performance boost over the M1 chip. It should offer a choice of 16 or 32 GPU cores, and support for up to 64GB of RAM (the M1 supports only 16GB).

The Mac Mini is one of Apple's most beloved computer products. The tiny PC is the cheapest Mac option because it lacks a display, keyboard, and mouse. The base model is a capable home PC, and is popular for use as a home theater server. It also can be ordered with more powerful components for professional applications and even mounted in racks for an affordable data center solution.

The Mac Mini was in the first wave of Apple computers to get an M1 processor option last fall. However, it looks a though Apple is planning to take the Mac Mini to the next level, with an M1X-powered version.

MacRumors reports that in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says to expect a new, high-end M1X Mac Mini sometime in the next few months. Unlike the M1 Mac Mini from 2020, the M1X version would feature a new design that shrinks the form factor further but adds more ports.

The M1X Mac Mini would likely be aimed at the professional crowd and would replace existing Intel options remaining in the lineup, with the 2020 M1 Mac Mini staying as the affordable, consumer-focused option.

It's entirely possible we'll hear about additional Apple products at its fall 2021 special event(s). There are a few distinct possibilities – a couple things that are expected to be released at some point, and one that’s mostly just rumors at this point. But any of these longshots have the potential to be an infamous Apple "one more thing" reveal.

After Apple released the thin, 24-inch M1 iMac in multiple colors, it paved the path for two potential additional releases, which are likely to come at some point, even if it’s not this fall:

• The first is a larger iMac to replace the current 27-inch model. This release might have been awaiting the more powerful M1X/M2 processor expected to debut in new MacBook Pros. With those processors now in production, the door is opened for a powerful, colorful, thin iMac with a larger display – possibly 30 inches – for the professional crowd.
• The M1 MacBook Air was a big leap forward in performance, but the look remained the same. However, Apple is rumored to be working on an all-new MacBook Air. This rumor suggests a complete redesign, including a mini-LED display, flat edges, MagSafe charging, plus multiple case color options such as those offered by the 24-inch M1 iMac. Most rumors point to a 2022 release date, but it's possible Apple might announce this alongside new MacBook Pros in the fall.

And then there’s the really long longshot.

It's no secret that Apple is not making the headway it wanted to in the home speaker market. In fact, Apple killed off its original HomePod speaker this year, leaving just the HomePod Mini behind.

Apple also continues to struggle to gain traction with its Apple TV video streamers, which hold low-single-digit market share and trail the likes of Roku and Chromecast. These give Apple a living room presence and help to boost Apple TV+ video streaming adoption.

Rumors began circulating earlier this year about a product that would solve both problems: an AppleTV/HomePod hybrid soundbar.

The approach has worked for Roku, so it wouldn't be a stretch for Apple to give it a shot. In addition, if Apple were to integrate a camera, it would have a FaceTime competitor to the likes of the Amazon Echo Show.

Again, this is a long-long-longshot. But if Apple were developing this device, the company would want it on store shelves in time for the holiday shopping season. That would mean a fall announcement.

The 2021 school year is here and once again, laptops are in the spotlight. Students have always appreciated the mobility of a laptop, but pandemic-driven remote learning and hybrid schooling have made them essential.

This year, there are more choices than ever as well as new twists to consider. AMD Ryzen mobile processors are competing with Intel, and Apple has new MacBook models powered by its M1 chip.. To help you make the right choice, we’ve narrowed the field down to 10 of the best laptops for students in 2021.

Two things to remember when laptop shopping for a student. First, a webcam is now a “must-have” feature. Most current laptops are equipped with one but if not, you’ll need an external USB-powered webcam. And second, check with your school administration before making a purchase. Some courses have specific hardware and/or software requirements. There have also been issues over the past year with some remote exam-proctor solutions not being compatible with Chromebooks.

As always, remember to leverage your student status for educational discounts. For example, Microsoft offers up to 10% off select devices for students and parents. Apple also offers student discounts year-round and runs a yearly special promotion for students. This year’s (which is in effect until September 27) will get students a free pair of AirPods with a qualifying Mac purchase.

Finally, the global shortage of semiconductors continues to affect the PC industry, so some laptops may be in limited supply. You may need to check multiple retailers to find the one you want. Prices have also been on the rise and could change from the MSRPs we’ve listed.

The Chromebook Duet from Lenovo combines two of the best features of Chromebooks: flexibility and affordability. The MSRP starts at just $299, but it can often be found for less. It’s also an extremely light and compact option (weighing just 2.03 pounds). Well-regarded by reviewers, this 2-in-1 Chromebook is a great option for K12 students.

This is not a blazingly fast device, but it’s well-equipped for general school use with a 10.1-inch Full HD display, an 8-core MediaTek processor, a single USB-C port, 4GB of RAM and a choice of 64GB or 128GB of solid state storage. It’s also equipped with dual cameras, including a 2MP webcam. Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours.

One of its strengths is a detachable keyboard. Securely connected by magnets, it provides a decent typing experience with minimal flex. Pop it off, and the Chromebook Duet becomes a tablet (weighing just one pound), which is ideal for running Android apps, reading, or drawing.

The Google Pixelbook Go remains a top pick for students who prefer a Chromebook.

Google’s Chromebook is thin and light (0.5-inches and 2.3 pounds), with a premium, painted magnesium case. Even the entry level model is equipped with 8GB of RAM. The 13.3-inch Full HD display is crisp, bright, and colors pop. The backlit keyboard ranks among the best for typing and it also features a dedicated Google Assistant button. The built-in DuoCam is better than most laptop webcams, with a full 1080p resolution at a smooth 60 fps. To seal the deal, the Pixelbook Go boasts 12-hour battery life.

Google has (so far) been able to resist the urge to raise the Pixelbook Go’s price since last year’s chip shortages and supply chain challenges began. Its starting price in 2019 was $649, and that remains the starting price in 2021. However, for the biggest bang for your buck. I would recommend spending an extra $200 for the mid-range model, which gets a much more powerful Intel Core i5 processor and doubles the onboard storage to 128GB.

As the company behind the Windows operating system, Microsoft has a distinct advantage when it comes to designing laptops. The company uses its position to create Surface devices that are Windows showcases, optimized for the software and featuring premium quality.

The Surface Laptop has been a long-time favorite for students, and it’s now in its fourth generation. Available with a choice of 13.5-inch or 15-inch high resolution PixelSense touchscreen displays, these laptops can be customized with a wide range of color options, and even a soft, Alcantara palm rest.

The most compelling configuration for students in 2021 may be the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4 with a powerful new, Surface Edition AMD Ryzen 5 processor with Radeon graphics. The six-core processor offers best-in-class processing power for multi-tasking, plus up to 19 hours of battery life. Priced at $1,199.99 this configuration includes 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.

All Surface Laptop 4 models are great choices for remote learning. They are equipped with Wi-Fi 6, low light HD webcams, far-field Studio mics, and Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Atmos.

If you like the Lenovo Duet 2-in-1 approach, but would prefer Windows over Chrome as an operating system, Microsoft has an option in the Surface Go 2.

Its second generation Windows 10 tablet weighs 1.2 pounds and features a 10.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen display (1920 x 1280 resolution) with stylus support. It’s equipped with 8th generation Intel Core processors, 4GB or 8GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of SSD storage, and Wi-Fi 6. Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours. Windows 10 Home in S mode is preinstalled for additional kid-friendly security, but you can easily switch to regular Windows 10 at no cost.

It’s very well equipped for remote learning with a 1080p Skype HD webcam, dual studio mics, and stereo speakers with Dolby support. Unfortunately, the Type Cover is not included, but pick one up and you have a super-compact Windows 2-in-1 laptop. The Surface Go 2 ranges from $399.99 to $729.99, with the optional Type Cover adding another $99.99 to the price. Include a Surface Pen stylus for taking notes or writing, and you’ll need to add $99.99 more to the budget.

One of the most impressive laptops I’ve evaluated this year would be ideal for students who need a Windows laptop offering plenty of computing power and screen real estate.

The 2021 LG Gram 16 qualifies as an ultra-light laptop, despite its 11th gen Intel Core i7 CPU and 16-inch WQXGA (2560 x 1600) display. In fact, at just 2.62 pounds, the LG Gram 16 is the lightest commercially available 16-inch laptop.

Adding to this $1699.99 laptop’s high-performance cred is its standard equipment of 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 1TB of m.2 NVMe storage, Wi-Fi 6, and Intel Iris Xe graphics. It’s equipped with a wide range of ports for accessories and peripherals, including dual USB-C (Thunderbolt 4), dual USB Type-A, HDMI, and a microSD card slot. There’s an HD webcam, plus stereo speakers.

The Gram 16 is also an Intel Evo platform laptop, which means it is rated for up to 22 hours of use on a charge.

Dell has spent years perfecting its XPS 13 series laptops. Ultra-portable, with beautiful InfinityEdge displays, CNC-machined aluminum construction (with carbon fiber interiors and Gorilla Glass 6 protection), and long battery life make them a favorite of students who want a combination of performance, portability, durability, and style.

There are multiple XPS 13 models and configurations to choose from, but the one that will hit a sweet spot for many students is the XPS 13 2-in-1 with an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 processor. This laptop’s 360-degree hinge makes it a versatile option for remote learning or watching streaming video — set it up in tent mode and it’s stable, with no keyboard in the way. Video conferencing is enhanced by a widescreen HD camera with noise reduction, dual array digital mics, and stereo speakers.

The 13.4-inch FHD+ touchscreen display with antiglare treatment is powered by Intel Iris Xe graphics and it’s HDR 400 certified for natural colors. This 2.9 pound laptop is equipped with a full array of ports, 8GB of RAM, 256 GB of PCIe NVMe storage, a backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6, Windows Hello facial recognition, and it delivers battery life of up to 14 hours.

Apple’s MacBook Air always makes the list of top student laptops. It offers a compelling combination of performance, portability, style, and battery life.

The current model is the best ever, but there’s a twist. In 2020, Apple dumped Intel processors in this laptop, replacing them with its own M1 chip with integrated Neural Engine. This delivered huge performance gains. Apple says the M1 MacBook Air is up to 3.5 times faster than its predecessor, with up to five times the graphics performance. It runs silently, with no fan. This is a “green” laptop, with its case made of 100% recycled aluminum. The energy-efficient M1 improved battery life to up to 18 hours.

The base M1 MacBook Air is nicely equipped with a 13.3-inch Retina (2560-by-1600) True Tone display, 8GB of memory, a 256GB SSD, Touch ID, Wi-Fi 6, backlit Magic keyboard, and a FaceTime HD webcam with a three-mic array. It’s a great price at $999, but even better at the discounted education price of $899.

The only downside? There are just two USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) ports, so you may need a USB dongle to connect older accessories like thumb drives.

The M1 MacBook Air is a powerful machine, but the M1 version of Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro takes it up a notch. The M1 processor in the MacBook Pro gets an additional GPU core for improved graphics performance, especially for demanding, sustained tasks like exporting video. In the MacBook Pro, battery life stretches to 20 hours.

Here’s where things get complicated. Apple still offers previous generation MacBook Pro models with Intel processors. Unless you are using software that is known to have compatibility issues with the M1, I would stay away from the Intel versions. New macOS features are already leaving Intel behind. Many apps have already been M1-optimized and most others will run just fine in Apple’s Rosetta 2 emulation.

Students in creative courses that use Adobe’s applications — a big market for the MacBook Pro — may want to check Adobe’s website to see which software runs natively on the M1 processor.

The same qualifier from the MacBook Air holds true with the M1 MacBook Pro. There are just two USB-C ports, so be prepared to invest in a USB adapter or hub. With a starting price of $1,299 ($1,199 at Apple’s educational pricing), the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro is a compelling option for students who want a stylish, high performance laptop.

While the pandemic brought remote learning to the forefront, it also elevated PC gaming to new levels of popularity. That means more students than ever want a back-to-school laptop that they can also game on. The Acer Nitro 5 is an affordable gaming laptop ($999.99) that proves you can enjoy mobile gaming without breaking the bank.

The Nitro 5 at this price point is equipped with a 15.4-inch Full HD display and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650Ti graphics card with 4GB of RAM. There’s 256GB of SSD storage, 8GB of DDR4 system RAM, and all the ports you could want. It even has a 720p webcam!

The big story here is the AMD Ryzen 5 series 4600H 6-core processor. It’s a top performer and also very energy efficient. Gaming the newest titles with the Nitro 5 will require dialling down the effects at 1080p resolution, however most games will be very playable. Even better, thanks to the Ryzen 5 CPU, battery life is excellent for a gaming laptop. For low-demand tasks like web browsing, you might be able to squeeze out 10 hours of use.

The final laptop on the 2021 list is equally suited to high-end mobile gaming and high-demand courses, such as 3D modelling or editing 4K video.

Last year, we featured the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 in this position. This year it’s the G15. Despite sporting a big, 15.6-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) display, this laptop is thin and light, coming in at 0.78-inches thick and 4.19 pounds.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 is equipped to take on the most demanding modern games, with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS processor. A range of Nvidia’s hot new RTX 3000 mobile GPUs is offered, so you can enjoy real-time ray-tracing and other advanced effects. Other specs of note include a 65Hz refresh rate on the display, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 512GB or 1TB of m.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 storage, all the ports you might need, and Wi-Fi 6. The speaker setup is impressive, with a pair of tweeters and four woofers delivering Dolby Atmos support. The integrated array microphone features AI mic noise-cancelling technology. Battery life — when doing school-related tasks instead of blowing up aliens — is a very respectable (for a gaming laptop) eight hours.

It will also crunch a data-heavy spreadsheet in no time.

The ROG Zephyrus G15 equipped with a top of the line Nvidia RTX 3080 with 8GB of DDR6 RAM retails for $2,499. No internal webcam is standard, although ASUS says all but the two entry-level versions of this laptop include a 1080p, 60fps external webcam in the box.

The coronavirus pandemic is likely to be a holiday grinch this year. If you decide to play it safe and celebrate with virtual visits, there are plenty of age-friendly gadgets and accessories to help you do it.

By now, most people are used to virtual visits. “It became a part of my life, seeing people in two dimensions instead of three,” says Charles Heller of Annapolis, Md. The 84-year-old author has three grandchildren and serves on several boards. To stay connected, he uses his desktop and the video chat app GoToMeeting.

For older users, finding the right device often involves accommodating physical difficulties such as hearing loss, reduced vision or digital dexterity. Small text is not the only challenge. It’s “behaviors, like swiping and tapping or knowing the difference between a tap and a long press,” says Sara Silver, founder of Computer Companion in Northbrook, Ill., which helps older adults master technology.

Still, “clients are doing so much more with their iPhone,” Silver notes. According to an AARP survey, 86% of Americans age 50 to 59 own one, dropping to 81% for 60-somethings and 62% for those 70-plus.

If you want a simpler alternative to Apple’s iPhone with larger fonts, GreatCall specializes in tech devices for older adults and sells the Prepaid Jitterbug Smartphone 2 for $75. Its ease of use and well-spaced keypad drew praise from PCMag but also low marks for the camera, speaker volume and overall speed.

But don’t snub Apple products, as you may be surprised by some of their age-friendly features. For better visibility, you can adjust font, cursor size and screen contrast. The VoiceOver feature translates the content on the screen into audio and, under Apple’s newest operating system, iOS 14, even describes images.

Accessories like strong speakers and quality headphones can also help. Heller says his wife, who is hard of hearing, struggled at first with virtual get-togethers, so he bought her a pair of Bose headphones—problem solved. If you or your loved one could use an upgrade of some of the basics, consider these products:

■ Noise-canceling headphones. Bose tops Consumer Reports ratings with its Quiet Comfort 35 Series II and 700 models ($350-$400). The magazine’s cheaper recommendations include Bose Quiet Comfort ($200), JBL 650BTNC ($150-$200) and Monoprice BT-300ANC ($50).

■ Mouse. Arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome can make scrolling painful. Scott Grant, founder of Graying with Grace, recommends buying a mouse that does not need a tight grip. A mouse with a trackball may be a better bet, he says, if it does not require curling a finger. His suggestions: Kensington Expert Wireless Trackball ($85), Sanwa Bluetooth Vertical ($25) or Adesso Easy Cat 2 Button Touchpad ($50)

■ Speakers. Look for portability, range and sound quality. Among lower-priced options, Denon HEOS 5 HS2 ($350) and Sonos One SL ($180) offer good sound and WiFi connection, finds Consumer Reports.

■ Webcam. If your onscreen image makes you look like someone in witness protection, you probably need a better webcam. One with high marks is Logitech 920S, which sells for under $100.

Although AARP rates Facetime as the easiest video app to use, it only works on Apple products, whereas Skype, Zoom and GoToMeeting work on any device. Most are free with some restrictions.

Heidi Wilson, 69, loves to watch British television shows with her husband, but the accents and her hearing impairment made it difficult to catch all the dialogue. “I was always interrupting to ask him to repeat what the characters said or to turn up the volume,” she says in an email.

Then several months ago, Wilson, a retired lawyer in Wayzata, Minn., got a pair of Starkey Livio Edge AI hearing aids that she controls with her smartphone. An app helps her filter out background noise and adjust volume to hear better.

“Now I usually hear the accents well enough to understand, and if I can’t, I use the app to turn up the volume,” she says.

For older adults willing to embrace it, wireless technology is a game changer, making a bevy of sophisticated products—from smartphone-managed hearing aids to home sensors that communicate with distant caregivers—possible. In many cases, the technology is helping older adults live independently at home longer, with baby boomers a rich consumer market for the devices. Boomers are interested in the technology not only to improve their own quality of life but also to help care for elderly parents, who are just as adamant about remaining in their own homes.

Technology, of course, is no substitute for human caregivers, but it can stretch a budget for in-home care with remote monitoring and other safety devices.

“They don’t replace the capabilities you get in assisted living,” says Laurie Orlov, principal analyst with Aging and Health Technology Watch in Port St. Lucie, Fla. But “some of these technologies can be useful for people who cannot afford $4,000 a month.”

The six products that follow are a sampling of the range of devices, some of which are tied to subscription services or may only be obtained through a third party, like a physician or home care agency.

■ Apple Watch Series 6 ($399). Think of this digital wristwatch, which has a built-in electrocardiogram, as a ticker for your ticker. The watch’s ECG feature has Food and Drug Administration approval and monitors a person’s heartbeat for irregularities, like those associated with atrial fibrillation. Users hold their finger to a sensor on the watch to get a reading.

The ECG feature needs an iPhone 6s or later to work and a health app that can be downloaded free. The ECG results can be saved or shared with a doctor.

The watch also detects falls and automatically dials 911 if the wearer is unresponsive after 60 seconds.

■ MedMinder ($49.99 per month for pillbox rental and refill service). At first glance, this pill dispenser looks like any other, with 28 compartments for medication dosages organized by day of the week for one to four weeks of medications. A MedMinder pharmacist fills the prescriptions with customized trays that slide into the dispenser to match the user’s medication schedule. Flashing lights, beeps, phone calls or text messages remind users it’s time to take the pills.

Refill trays are automatically mailed to the recipient; five or more prescription medications are needed for the monthly refill service. MedMinder works with most insurers, including many Medicare Part D plans, and requires a cellphone or WiFi connection.

■ Starkey Livio Edge AI hearing aids ($5,000-$6,500 per pair including audiologist service). Using an app and a smartphone, these rechargeable hearing aids customize sound for the wearer. In “edge” mode, the hearing aid isolates certain sounds, like a companion’s voice, so that users can hear better in noisy settings like restaurants. The app also streams phone calls, music, podcasts and audio books directly to the hearing aid.

The hearing aids come with a fitness app and use artificial intelligence to monitor a person’s activity level and detect falls. Starkey Livios are only available through an audiologist who tests the user’s hearing and fits the device. Most insurers and traditional Medicare don’t cover hearing aids or exams for adults, though some Advantage plans do as an extra benefit.

■ True Link Prepaid Visa Card ($10 per month). This customizable debit card and subscription service offers older adults with a mild cognitive disability some financial freedom for ordinary daily purchases at a coffee shop or grocery store while alerting caregivers to big expenditures. The card is linked to an existing bank account for recurring transfers. A trusted family member sets the amount for triggering an alert and selects criteria for blocking payments, such as those to telemarketers, charities and TV shopping. The alerts can be sent to more than one person.

“You have situations like two sisters; one of them wants to keep an eye on mom and the other wants to keep an eye on the sister,” says True Link’s CEO Kai Stinchcombe.

■ SmartSole ($299 for insoles and $24.98 monthly subscription). Keeping track of a loved one with dementia who wanders off and gets lost is a full-time job that typically falls to family members. More than 5.8 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s, the most common type of dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

With built-in GPS, this smart insole fits inside most shoes to make tracking the person easier from any computer, tablet or smartphone. The device pinpoints the person’s whereabouts on a map, supplying addresses and outdoor locations to within 15 feet every five minutes.

The SmartSole uses a small rechargeable 2G cellphone-style battery and generally lasts one or two days on a single charge. The product works in connection with a monthly subscription monitoring service.

■ envoyatHome ($99 to $399 per month depending on agency and level of monitoring; installation may be separate). This remote caregiving service was designed for older adults who can’t afford a full-time health aide and live alone, like envoyatHome CEO Rob Blatt’s mom. Newly widowed, she was living in another state when Blatt, an engineer, devised the service that later became envoyatHome.

There are no cameras, but the service uses smart-home sensors and is purchased through a partnering home care agency to monitor the person’s wellness and safety. Reports and alerts are issued in real time so that remote caregivers can close a forgotten garage door or check if a home health aide is rifling through a drawer where valuables are kept. No matter which laptop you end up choosing, make sure to check for an integrated webcam (for remote learning support), and verify with your school board or college program whether they have any specific hardware requirements.

Also, don’t forget to check if you qualify for a student discount. Apple (for example) offers both educational pricing, and a back-to-school offer of free AirPods with the purchase of a new MacBook. Demand is high, and models frequently sell out. If the one you want is out of stock, check the manufacturer's online stores frequently and scour retailers.

Many school boards have adopted Chromebooks as their preferred laptop choice for students. They are affordable, secure, and designed to integrate perfectly with Google’s G-Suite. Chromebooks can also run Android apps from Google Play — including Microsoft 365.

The ASUS ChromeBook Flip C214 is a perfect laptop for younger students. With an 11.6-inch HD+ touchscreen display, it’s compact and easy to carry. The 360-degree hinge makes it usable as an Android tablet, or for drawing (stylus is not included on base model). It has both USB-C and a USB Type-A port, so it can connect to new accessories as well as thumb drives. There’s an integrated webcam, plus a “world-facing” camera for snapping photos or shooting video.

ASUS built this one to withstand the kind of punishment only kids can dole out. The edges and corners are protected by rubber bumpers. The keyboard is spill resistant. The hinge is designed to weather repeated open and close cycles. The lid can survive 66 pounds of force. And the Flip C214 can survive a drop from desk height. ASUS says it exceeds military-grade MIL-STD-810G durability standards.

The $350 starting price and durability makes the Flip C214 a favorite with parents, so you may have to shop around to find one in stock.

Chromebooks started out as uber-cheap alternatives to Windows laptops, but with their growing popularity, they have also expanded to offer much more compelling options. A student who has been using Chromebooks and prefers the platform but wants something a little nicer and more powerful will appreciate Google’s Pixelbook Go.

Ultra thin, light (just two pounds), and offering 12-hour battery life, the Pixelbook Go is about as portable as laptops get. The base model is equipped with a bright, colorful 13.3-inch Full HD touchscreen display and a great keyboard. It has an excellent 1080p webcam. The Pixelbook Go starts at a modest $649, but the best option for most students is the $849 version which gets an 8th generation Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

I’ve been using the $849 model (supplied by Google) as part of a long-term evaluation, and the Pixelbook Go is an impressive Chromebook — one that I’ve been able to use without compromise for work, including Zoom video meetings.

The Pixelbook Go is a looker, with its premium magnesium case and unique, grippy bottom (available in Just Black or Not Pink). It’s also available in a high performance model with an Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a 4K UDH Molecular display for $1399.

The Acer Swift 3 proves that you can get a functional, student-friendly Windows laptop without spending a lot of money.

Acer makes multiple variations of the Swift 3, but the most interesting is the SF314-42-R9YN model. It features a 14-inch Full HD IPS display, 8GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage, and AMD’s powerful new 8-core Ryzen 7 CPU.

The Swift 3 also includes USB-C and USB Type-A ports, plus HDMI output for connecting to an external monitor or a TV. Battery life is rated at up to 11 hours. It also features a lightweight aluminum body, backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6 support, a 720p webcam, and an integrated fingerprint reader.

Pretty impressive for $649.99.

If you’re going to be staring at a laptop display for hours and don’t have an external monitor to connect to, then a bigger display is better. That’s where a full-sized laptop shines.

ASUS has a student-friendly option in the VivoBook 15 (S533FA). Despite the big display, the NanoEdge design, with minimal bezels, keeps the VivoBook 15 thin and light, at under 4 pounds. With a starting price of $699.99 this laptop won’t break the bank, either.

The ASUS VivoBook 15 sports a 15.6-inch Full HD panel. It’s equipped with all the latest tech, including Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, PCIe SSD storage, and 10th generation Intel Core processors. Music and movie lovers will appreciate the stereo speakers (tuned by Harman Kardon). It has a full complement of ports, an array microphone with Cortana voice support, and an HD webcam.

The VivoBook S15 is also offered in a variety of colors, and even includes a collection of lid stickers so kids can individualize their laptop choice.

Convertible, 2-in-1 laptops are a popular option for students. These laptops deliver the full Windows 10 laptop experience, but have the ability to transform into other form factors. Flipping one of these into “tent” mode is a great option for presentations, sharing information in a group, or watching a streaming video. They can also be used as tablets or slates.

HP’s ENVY series of 2-in-1 laptops are always a good bet. The new 13-inch version (ENVY 13-ay0021nr, $999.99) is an especially good choice for students. It’s highly portable and delivers up to 12 hours of battery life.

The 13.3-inch BrightView, micro-edge Full HD touchscreen display is a beauty and the aluminum body gives the laptop a premium appearance.

The real value in this 2-in-1 is the performance for the price. HP is using AMD’s new Ryzen 7 (4700U) processor with 8-cores and integrated AMD Radeon graphics. That’s paired with 16GB of DDR4 RAM and 512GB of super-fast PCIe NVMe storage. It’s equipped with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and both USB-C and USB Type-A ports. Stereo speakers are tuned by Bang and Olufsen, it has dual array microphones, and the WideVision HD camera has a built-in shutter to ensure privacy — slide the cover over and there's no way for the camera to see a thing.

For those who want the best in premium Windows laptop design and a top all-round performer, the Dell XPS 13 is the one to beat. It made last year’s list, and 2018 as well. Every year, Dell has continued to improve the XPS 13 and this year’s version is the best yet. It won the Best In Show award for laptops at CES 2020.

Dell says it has shrunk the new XPS 13 (9300) by another 2%, but bumped up the InfinityEdge display to a 13.4-inch version that offers 6.8% more screen space. Its 4-element webcam is designed to improve video in low light conditions. In addition, the webcam has been moved back to the traditional position in the top bezel — which makes for a much better video conferencing experience than last year’s model.

As always, the XPS 13 is a sleek wedge of premium materials, including a CNC-machined aluminum body, carbon fiber, and Gorilla Glass 6 that tips the scales at just 2.8 pounds. Dell offers a wide range of models starting at $1149.99, but they all feature a 13.4-inch InfinityEdge display, 10th generation Intel Core CPUs, DDR4 RAM, M.2 PCIe NVMe solid state storage, Killer Wi-Fi 6, two USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) ports, a micro SD card slot, stereo speakers, a dual array microphone, a fingerprint reader, an edge-to-edge backlit keyboard, and battery life rated at up to 18 hours+ on a charge.

Apple’s MacBook Air is another laptop that makes repeated appearances on any list of best laptops for students.

The MacBook air popularized — if not invented — the ultra-light aluminum wedge laptop form factor. Every year Apple tweaks the design. Several years back, that didn’t turn out so well when the company decided to equip the MacBook Air with the infamous, failure-prone “butterfly” keyboard. However, the 2020 version returned to the tried and true scissor-switch backlit keyboard, and added 10th generation Intel processors.

The 2020 MacBook Air is a great option for students who prefer Apple. It’s constructed from 100% recycled aluminum (in a choice of three colors), and starts at $999. The entry-level laptop configuration features a 13.3-inch Retina True Tone display, a dual core Intel Core i3 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, two USB-C ports, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Touch ID support, stereo speakers, and a 720p FaceTime HD camera.

The MacBook Air weighs 2.8 pounds and measures 0.63-inches at its thickest point.

For students in fields (graphic design, for example) that require more processing power, Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro remains the go-to choice, combining power with portability. This laptop features 10th generation Intel Core processors, a 13-inch Retina Display with True Tone, Touch Bar with Touch ID, a 720p FaceTime HD camera, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and 10-hour battery life. The all-aluminum laptop weighs 3.1 pounds.

Like the MacBook Air, the 2020 version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro dumps the hated butterfly keyboard.

Avoid the cheapest options for this laptop, as they have just two USB-C ports and use Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645. The versions starting at $1699 (we’re assuming you’ll get the student discount) have four USB-C ports, more powerful Intel Core i5 CPUs, more storage, and they’re equipped with the more capable Intel Iris Plus Graphics.

If you require a standalone GPU for advanced graphics processing and want to stick with an Apple laptop, then you’ll need to move up to the more expensive, 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Students in search of an ultraportable and ultra-versatile device might want to consider Microsoft’s Surface Go 2.

This is a 10.5-inch tablet that runs Windows 10. It’s not as large as the more expensive Surface Pro, making it easier to hold and to carry. With a starting price of $399.99, it’s also considerably more affordable than Microsoft’s prosumer tablet. But the Surface Go 2 shares many design features, including a magnesium case, PixelSense touch display, built-in Kickstand, stylus support, and an optional Type Cover.

Power is supplied by 8th generation Intel processors, there’s a choice of 4G or 8GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of solid state storage. Other features include a 1080p Skype HD camera with dual microphones, Wi-Fi 6, stereo speakers with Dolby Audio, a USB-C port and a Micro SD card reader.

Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours, and the Surface Go 2 on its own weighs just 1.2 pounds. However, to make this a true laptop you’ll need to add the optional Type Cover, which adds $129.99 to the price and an additional 8.6 ounces of weight.

Many students are gamers, so it would only make sense to combine two purchases into one: a gaming PC that’s also usable for school.

Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. Gaming laptops can get very expensive. In addition, their high-powered components make them larger and much more power-hungry than other laptops. It’s not unusual for a gaming laptop to only have three or four hours of battery life.

The new ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 truly offers the best of both worlds. This is a powerful gaming laptop. It’s equipped with new AMD Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 processors, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics and the choice of Full HD or WQHD graphics on a 14-inch display with up to 120Hz refresh rate. It’s loaded with ports, Wi-Fi 6 wireless and four speakers with Dolby Atmos audio support. The keyboard is RGB backlit, with N key rollover. It will chew through AAA games and even supports real-time ray tracing for more realistic renderings.

Despite the firepower under the hood, the ROG Zephyrus G14 weighs just 3.5 pounds and offers battery life of up to 11 hours — frankly, that’s amazing for a gaming laptop. With pricing starting at $1,449.99, the premium for such performance is modest.

The one thing this laptop lacks is a webcam. If you intend to use it join online classes that require two-way video chat, you’ll need to spring for an external webcam.
