When people talk about closing costs and other expenses to prepare for when you buy a new home, they often forget to mention furniture, gadgets and new decor. And after 15 years of living in apartments, when I moved into a house, there was a lot to purchase.

Suddenly, I had a separate dining room. And a living room that can fit an L-shaped couch. And a kitchen with enough storage space to finally fit my KitchenAid stand mixer. A backyard where we could grill! A basement where we could work out! Wonders never ceased, but those wonders have a price attached.

My husband and I have been slowly filling up the space, and I try to take advantage of sales seasons so we can save at least a little on all the purchases. Now is a great time to do that as Amazon Prime Day kicks off this week, setting off sales at other retailers, and as we approach annual Fourth of July season sales. We're starting our first full summer in the house, and here's what I'm looking out for. If I already made (or am specifically planning to make) a purchase, I'll let you know what I went with.

Items for hosting

One of the best parts of having a house is getting to host your friends and family, but it helps to have some key supplies. Here's what I'm looking at.

Drink pitchers

My ideal symbol of hosting is a pitcher of iced tea or lemonade at the ready when someone comes over, so I need pitchers. I looked for a glass pitcher over plastic so I can potentially run it through the dishwasher, but mostly so I don't have to think about microplastics.

Amazon option: This 1-gallon square pitcher has a strainer option on its lid, which is useful if you're making something like sangria or lemon-infused water. The list price is $41.23, and it's currently listed for $32.99.

Alternative option: This 64-ounce glass pitcher from Walmart is smaller than the Amazon option but has a more appealing design. It's typically $13.99 but currently lists for $12.59.

What I ended up getting: The lidded options are definitely functional, but I liked the aesthetic of this 80-ounce glass pitcher from Crate & Barrel for $14.95. If you've just moved, Crate & Barrel has a "new mover" promotion for a discount.

Drink dispensers

Along with multifunctional pitchers I can use for bringing water to the dining room table, I wanted a glass drink dispenser I could use for making batch cocktails.

Amazon option: This highly rated dispenser comes with a blackboard sign so you can write what the drink is along with the dispenser. It comes in 1-gallon, 1.5-gallon, and 2-gallon sizes, and it also has the option of getting two dispensers that sit side-by-side on a stand. There is a Prime Day Deal on it, and the 1-gallon set of two with a stand is $32.75 (list $38.99).

Alternative option: Target has a lot of handy home goods, including this stylish 1.8-gallon dispenser with a wooden stand. It's $34.99.

What I ended up getting: We're back at Crate & Barrel with a splurge: This 1.5-gallon dispenser with a marble stand is on sale as part of the company's 4th of July Warehouse Sale. Originally $154.90, it's 10% off.

Cornhole set

If you're having friends and family over, it's nice to have a noncommittal activity available to them, like cornhole. I thought this would be a simple purchase, but there are many different cornhole set options available, from regulation-sized to strictly portable. Let's get into it.

Amazon option: Amazon Basics has a portable set available made out of plywood. It has 4.5 stars from 2,500 reviews and is priced at $73.49.

Alternative options: You can get a Rec League regulation-sized set from Dick's Sporting Goods. It's usually $169.99 but is on major sale for $99.98.

REI sells a backpack cornhole game if you want one to be able to bring somewhere easily, for $39.95.

What I ended up getting: Believe it or not, this was a Costco purchase. Costco has a basic GoSports all-weather set with a simple but classic design. It's $159.99. If you're not already a member, you can get $40 back on a Costco membership.

Backyard fun

I'm excited to have a backyard to relax in. Here's what will make it more fun.

Grill

It's not a backyard summer without a grill. Grills come in all shapes, sizes and price points, so this is where it would help to do some research and pick out what you want, then see if it goes on sale.

Amazon option: Amazon has many Traeger grills, including this portable electric wood pellet grill and smoker. There is a Prime Day Deal on this for $422.61 (list price $499.99).

Alternative option: Lowes has some short-term sales on grills now, including this black pellet grill from PitBoss that has smart compatibility. Normally $749, it's $649 until June 24.

What I ended up getting: Following a friend's lead, we want to get a Weber grill — and you can get those at Costco, with delivery available. This gas grill, for example, is currently $110 off through June 28, coming in at $889.99. There's also a promotion going on through July 25 to save money if you buy multiple Costco Direct items on the same order. If you're not already a member, you can get $40 back on a Costco membership.

Patio umbrella

I was lucky to get a set of patio furniture from my parents that they didn't use anymore, but it's missing an umbrella. Here are some new options.

Amazon option: This 9-foot table umbrella comes in a multitude of colors and has 4.4 stars from over 5,000 reviews. The list price is $58.99, and it's currently on sale with a Prime Day Deal for $39.99.

Alternative options: If you don't have a table to put the umbrella in, try this 15-foot umbrella with a base from Walmart. It's typically $209.99, but certain colors are on sale for $119.99.

If you're a Sam's Club member, check out their patio furniture option. This 10-foot cabana umbrella is selling for $159.97.

Inflatable pool

If you don't buy a house with a pool, you might as well get the next best thing. Inflatable pools are great to have handy if you have grandchildren or nieces and nephews who visit — or if you're an adult who wants to relax outside on a hot day without going to a public pool.

Amazon option: This actually is the option I'm purchasing, based on a recommendation from a friend: An inflatable "tanning pool" lounger made for adults with a pillow to lean back on and cup holders for your lemonade. An extra-large option is typically $45.99 but is currently on sale with a Prime Day Deal for $31.99.

Alternative options: If you're looking for something more for kids, Target has an inflatable pool with a play center and a mini slide. It's usually $117.99 but is on sale for $45.99 (a whopping 61% off), and it has just over four stars from 79 reviews.

If you want something to imitate a real backyard pool, Walmart has an above-ground inflatable pool. A 12-foot version is usually $169.99 and is currently on sale for $109.99.

Summer activities

An exciting part of moving to a new place is getting to explore its public spaces. My new town has a lake and parks accessible to residents, as well as lots of summer concerts and movie screenings. Here's what I'm looking at to make the most of those resources.

Picnic blanket

Whether you're heading to a park or a beach, it's helpful to have a large picnic blanket. Here are some options I found.

Beach towels

I wanted to make sure I had extra beach towels so I have something to offer visiting friends if we go to the town pool. Here's what I looked at.

Amazon option: Amazon Basics has a couple of options of 100% cotton beach towels with the classic cabana stripe design. Their list price is $23.26.

Alternative options: If you want to get a few towels to have on hand, Walmart has a 4-pack of colorful beach towels. Usually $40.99, it's on sale for $29.99.

What I ended up getting: This was another Macy's purchase for me during their most recent sale: Striped cotton towels from The Beach House. Their list price is $50 each, but they currently have a Today Only price of $16.99.

Practical items

Now, living in a house is not all fun (inflatable pool!) and games (cornhole!) all the time. There's also upkeep to take care of. Here's what I'm managing, if it helps give you ideas.

Smart thermostat

Pretty much every time there's a sale season, I check for sales on smart thermostats so I can slowly but surely change out my outdated system.

Amazon option: Amazon has its own branded smart thermostat that you can link up with your Alexa. The list price for one thermostat is $79.99, and it's currently on sale with a Prime Day Deal for $57.99.

Alternative option: You can also buy thermostats directly from the manufacturer. Many HVAC experts I've talked to speak highly of the Ecobee; the Premium thermostat is usually $259.99, but is currently on sale for $209.99.

What I ended up getting: Once you start with one system, you basically have to keep going with it, so I always look for sales on Google Nest thermostats. A 4th gen learning thermostat is on sale at Best Buy for $239.99 (list price $279.99).

Dryer vent cap

This is a small detail, but homeowners know the value of paying attention to small details. In this case, a proper dryer vent could mean the difference between enjoying your summer or spending your summer fending off a wasp nest in your dryer vent.

Amazon option: Amazon offers a 4-inch dryer vent cover with a magnetic door and lint trap. It's usually $12.99 but has a Prime Day Deal for $9.99.

Alternative option: If a magnetic door seems a bit too much, Walmart has this classic dryer vent cover designed for airflow. It's $10.

What I ended up getting: My dryer vent is a good target for birds because of where it is on the house, so I went for this airtight dryer cover from Home Depot. It's $19.97.

Weeding tool

As your yard soaks in the sun and warmth, so do weeds. If you, like me, are in a battle against weeds, here are some good buys.

Amazon option: When I told the editor of the Kiplinger Retirement Report that I'd started gardening, he told me I needed to get a Japanese weeding tool for the most efficiency. This weeding sickle from Suizan is on Amazon for $27.80, and I'm keeping an eye out to see if it goes on sale.

Alternative options: Target has a 40-inch weed puller tool that allows you to do more while standing. It's usually $69.99 and is on sale for $39.99.

You could also skip the individual tools and invest in a whole set. Home Depot has a 9-piece gardening tool set with a functional tote bag from Misopily. It's usually $77.62 and is on sale for $72.27.

Amazon sales might not be the best deals on smart-home technology. Manufacturer websites often run their own promotions, and these deals may be more competitive than Amazon’s.

Value looks different for every household

There probably isn't one perfect store for every household. In fact, many of the most budget-conscious shoppers use a combination of retailers depending on what they need.

Maybe you buy paper towels, pet food and cleaning supplies at Costco. Then you stop by Dollar General during the week to grab a few items without making a big shopping trip.

That's becoming a common strategy.

The real lesson from the success of both Costco and Dollar General is that value looks different for different households. The smartest strategy may be using both approaches, depending on what you're buying and where your budget stands that week.

Everyone knows the best way to be treated right when you fly is to have status with an airline's loyalty program. With that distinction alone, the clouds clear: You get access to a dedicated customer service phone line, free seat upgrades and checked bags, and sometimes even access to airport lounges and other perks.

There are many ways to attain status. First and foremost, you can get an airline-branded credit card that automatically gets you in the club. The other option is simply to fly and spend enough with an airline that you qualify for status. If you're someone who travels regularly for work, that's a fairly easy step to take, but for people who only fly a handful of times a year, it might be harder to reach that.

If you are someone who travels "sparingly" (compared to a business traveler, that is) and you want to attain airline status, you need to make sure you're getting credit for as many miles as possible. And that's where my little "trick" comes in handy.

How to get credit for every flight you take

In truth, it's not really a trick as much as it is being informed and taking action when you fly. Basically, most airlines are part of "alliances" with each other, and those alliances allow you to share miles between them. But in order to make use of that, you have to pick your flights carefully — and make sure you get credit afterwards.

First, you'll want to decide which major airline is the one you are targeting to get status on. This airline is usually the one that flies the most out of the airport near you, or flies to the destination you travel to the most, if you have multiple airport options. Let's call it your "home base airline."

Whenever you book a big trip, you should aim to book it on that home base airline. But let's say you're traveling a route that airline doesn't have. That's when you check the alliance.

See which alliance your home base airline is part of. Then, see which other airlines are in that alliance. Now, you can see if one of those airlines flies the route you need.

If it does, you're in luck. When you book that flight, there is sometimes an option to add your loyalty number. If there is, type in your loyalty number from your home base airline, and you'll earn points from this flight, even though it was a different airline.

But let's say that option doesn't exist or you forget to fill it in. Don't worry, there's still hope, and this is the little "trick" to help you out. After you take the flight, check your home base airline profile and see if you got credit for it. If you didn't, you can request they find your "missing miles."

You'll need to log in to your account and then fill in the required information. Usually, that's information like your ticket number, so try to remember to hold onto your boarding pass or confirmation somewhere.

Each airline works a little differently in terms of when credit arrives and what information they need, so follow the directions on the site. Provided your request is approved, you'll get credit for that flight, which can help you get closer to attaining status with your home base airline.

How this worked for me

So, what does this look like in practice?

United is my home base airline as I prefer to fly out of Newark, which is a United hub. United is a member of the Star Alliance, which I like because it has a lot of regional airlines.

Typically when I take an international trip, I'll fly out of Newark with United, and then use regional airlines on the Star Alliance to get around if I'm location-hopping. And that's how I managed to earn Premier Silver status in 2024.

In January, I flew on a United ticket to New Zealand for my honeymoon. Air New Zealand is in the Star Alliance, so I flew with them when I traveled within New Zealand and between Australia. I was able to include my United mileage number on my Air New Zealand bookings and, after I got home, checked that I was credited on the path toward status with those flights.

In May, I had another international trip with a few destinations. I flew out to Greece on a United flight, then flew from Athens to an island on Aegean — a member of the Star Alliance. I used Aegean again to get to Dublin for a wedding, before flying on Swiss, another Star Alliance member, to get to Paris to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday, before flying home. (And yes, I needed a vacation from that vacation after all those flights.)

I logged every single one of those shorter flights and requested the missing miles when some of them didn't show up in my United account. This required a lot of concentration. To request the miles, I sometimes needed minute details down to my seat number and fare class, but ultimately I did get credit for each leg.

Between those big trips and a couple other domestic ones, I rightfully earned my Silver status that year — but it would not have happened without making use of the alliance flights and my vigilance to ensure those flights were counted.

Know your airline alliances

My key message here is to be aware of airline alliances and make use of them. With that, here are the major airline alliances, as of May 2026.

I am breaking them down by region, as that can be helpful to decide which alliance is most useful to you. If you're planning a big trip to Asia, for example, you may want to know which alliance has the most Asian airlines to accrue more points for your trip, and maybe that determines your home base target airline for the year. For me, that's another reason why United is my home base — the Star Alliance includes Aegean and ITA Airways, and as my big trips typically involve visiting family in Italy and Greece, this works out for me.

When you grow up in northern New Jersey as I did, you get used to the frivolous frustration of the "New York" sports teams that actually play in New Jersey. Now, that confusing twist of geography is going global, as the World Cup comes to the Meadowlands.

FIFA announced that eight matches for the 2026 World Cup, including the final, will be taking place at the "New York/New Jersey Stadium." To be clear, they're referring to MetLife Stadium, which is solidly in New Jersey.

MetLife Stadium sits in the middle of a complex braid of highways in East Rutherford. The best way to get there is via public transportation, and no, you cannot walk to the stadium. Understandably, many people going to the World Cup in New Jersey have concluded that they should stay in New York City, as you can take the train or an official shuttle to MetLife.

I'm not opposed to the idea of staying in New York City, but if you'd rather spend your time between matches relaxing with your family or "working-from-home," there are plenty of good locales in New Jersey. You also have more options than in New York City: New Jersey relaxed restrictions on short-term rentals, while New York City has not, so you can safely find an Airbnb or VRBO in the Garden State for the whole family or friend group.

With that in mind, here are several options for places to stay in New Jersey for the World Cup. I've selected these based on ease of travel to MetLife, but more so for your comfort and entertainment when you step away from the loud and massive crowds. These aren't the closest options to the Meadowlands.

I've split my selections into two categories: The Shore and The Suburbs. If you're looking for the beach, check out my picks for The Shore, but if you want a homier time, see The Suburbs.

How to get to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey

First, a quick rundown of how to get to MetLife. The New York New Jersey World Cup 2026 website explains that there will be no parking on match days, so you can't drive to the stadium. You can't walk, either.

Instead, you have the options of NJ Transit (train), rideshare and private transportation drop-offs, or the Official New York New Jersey Stadium Shuttle, which is doing pick-ups at three locations in Manhattan and one in New Jersey.

You need to pre-book tickets for the shuttle, and you have to buy NJ Transit tickets in advance. There has been controversy about the cost of NJ Transit tickets for the World Cup: Round-trip tickets from any rail station to the stadium for match day travel cost $98 per person.

On NJ Transit, you'll need to take the train to Secaucus (New Jersey's major train hub) or Hoboken, then transfer to get directly to the stadium. It will likely be a bit of a hassle, but follow the crowds and lean into the spirit of it all. You should also download the NJ Transit app; be aware it sometimes doesn't let you sign in if you're not currently in the geographic region.

Official travel guidance is still somewhat in flux (the NJ Transit price just changed last week, for example), so pay close attention to your own logistics.

The locations I'm selecting are near an NJ Transit station or the shuttle pick-up at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in Nutley, or are closer to the stadium itself. Let's look at places to stay.

The Shore

1. Long Branch

There's lots to love in Long Branch, including the clean beach, wide boardwalk and — an important point — many places to stay and a New Jersey Transit station half a mile from the ocean. Because of the convenience of that train station, Long Branch is a top destination for both New Jerseyans and New Yorkers looking for a day at the beach, and that makes it a great place for the World Cup.

If you don't want to find an Airbnb, the massive Ocean Place Resort & Spa is a 20-minute walk from the Long Branch train station.

• Train time to Secaucus: one hour, 15 to 30 minutes
• Driving time to MetLife (with no traffic): one hour, 30 minutes

2. Asbury Park

Go ahead, live out your Bruce Springsteen, rockstar dreams and stay in Asbury Park. Like Long Branch, there's an accessible train station here, and in Asbury, you can look more for bed and breakfasts and inns, including in nearby Ocean Grove.

Asbury Park is further south down the shore than Long Branch, but it comes with more entertainment, including, of course, the famous Stone Pony, which hosts Summer Stage, a series of concerts outside. Be aware, though: It's only standing-room, general admission tickets for Summer Stage.

• Train time to Secaucus: one hour, 45 minutes
• Driving time to MetLife (with no traffic): one hour, 20 minutes

3. Belmar

Two stops further on the train line to Belmar. Belmar is where you want to go to enjoy a more glamorous, comfortable and relaxing time on the shore. This is a place to look for historic inns and vacation home rentals.

While you'll be competing with New Jersey families for rentals, the school year in the state wraps up closer to the end of June, so you'll have less competition for the early rounds of the World Cup.

• Train time to Secaucus: Just under two hours
• Driving time to MetLife (with no traffic): one hour, 20 minutes

The Suburbs

1. Edgewater

As the name suggests, Edgewater is on the Hudson River, south of the George Washington Bridge and directly across the river from Harlem in Manhattan. Why Edgewater?

First, it's (usually) a quick drive to MetLife, so you could arrange for a drop-off. That proximity is why one New York City Council member proposed adding a ferry line from Harlem to Edgewater for the World Cup. Although that idea hasn't materialized into reality, ferry service will be boosted for the World Cup, which brings me to my second reason to stay in Edgewater:

You can take the ferry from Edgewater to Manhattan, so if you want to see New York City without paying New York hotel prices, this is an option, but you can also drive north and enjoy the parks and overlooks in Fort Lee and Englewood Cliffs. Third, there are waterfront apartments in Edgewater, some of which have access to a pool.

Staying in Hoboken or Jersey City would make getting to MetLife easier via public transportation, but Edgewater, West New York and North Bergen will likely get you slightly further from the crowds, with options to travel elsewhere on non-gamedays.

• Train time to Secaucus: n/a; you could drive about 20 minutes to the Teterboro station, then take a 15-minute train to Secaucus
• Driving time to MetLife (with no traffic): 20 minutes

2. Montclair

Montclair has a reputation as the place to go for young families and retirees alike, and for good reason: It's a charming, walkable town with plenty of public transportation. There are multiple NJ Transit stops in the area, which get you to Secaucus quickly, and it's also (usually) a quick drive to MetLife.

Montclair has some great World Cup counterprogramming for non-gamedays, including the Montclair Art Museum and the Van Vleck House & Gardens. The town also has a nice food and music scene.

If you're coming to the World Cup with your family, including young kids, this is a good place to look for lodging. Montclair is also something of a college town, so beyond Airbnb and VRBOs, there are hotel options, including The George, which was founded by makeup icon Bobbi Brown and her husband.

• Train time to Secaucus: 30 to 45 minutes
• Driving time to MetLife (with no traffic): 25 minutes
• Additional option: From Montclair, you could take the Official Stadium Shuttle from Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in nearby Nutley

3. Alpine

Pop quiz: When Novak Djokovic comes to compete at the U.S. Open in New York, where does he stay? If you guessed a fancy Midtown hotel, you're wrong.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner reportedly stays out in Alpine, the riverfront New Jersey town north of the George Washington Bridge. Why? Alpine homes have certain amenities, such as, for example, multiple tennis courts with different surfaces in the backyard. Alpine regularly makes the lists of most expensive ZIP codes, with homes spread out across large, private lots.

If you want to stay in a luxurious home for the World Cup, look at Alpine. Don't expect it to come cheap: One five-bedroom home is listed on Airbnb at about $35,000 for seven nights.

If you were to stay in Alpine, your closest NJ Transit station is Oradell, which is 15 to 20 minutes away by car.

• Driving time to MetLife (with no traffic): 30 minutes

If you own an electric vehicle, time is running out to take advantage of the EV charger tax credit. The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit covers up to 30% of the cost of a home EV charging station, including eligible hardware and installation expenses, up to $1,000.

The credit was originally extended through December 31, 2032. However, the GOP's One Big Beautiful Bill eliminated the tax credit, and it's now set to expire on June 30, 2026.

If you've been considering installing a home charging station, you might want to act soon to take advantage of the credit before it disappears.

Where you install the charger matters

To qualify for the credit, the IRS (PDF) requires you to install the charger in a home in an eligible low-income community census tract, or a nonurban census tract. According to the IRS, about two-thirds of Americans live in census tracts eligible for the credit.

A census tract is a small geographic region or neighborhood as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Census tracts allow the government to collect and organize data about these specific areas.

To determine if you live in a tract that’s eligible for the tax credit, use the U.S. Department of Energy 30C Tax Credit Eligibility Locator, which allows you to look up your address, and it identifies whether your home is in an eligible tract.

Not every home will qualify for the credit. If you have a second home, the charger must be installed at your primary residence to qualify for the credit.

Which types of EV chargers qualify

The EV charger tax credit applies to Level 1 and Level 2 chargers; the chargers must be new.

Level 1 chargers use standard 120V outlets and can be used for lighter charging needs, but most homeowners install Level 2 chargers, which are faster and can fully charge typical electric vehicles overnight.

When shopping for an EV charger, consider how you tend to use your vehicle, your typical charging needs and the types of features that you might want.

For example, smart scheduling can charge your vehicle during off-peak times when energy rates are lower, and smart chargers can provide detailed summaries of energy usage and can send you notifications to remind you to charge your car.

Both the hardware and the installation could count toward the tax credit.

Below are a few top-rated Level 2 EV chargers we found:

Do you need an electrician?

Many Level 2 chargers require professional installation. Depending on the location of the charger and the capacity of your electrical panel, an electrician might need to upgrade the panel to handle the additional electrical load.

The installation will typically require an electrical permit, which a licensed electrician can usually obtain on your behalf. If you live in a homeowners association (HOA), you might also need approval before installing a charger.

Installing a charger can become more complicated if you rent your home or live in a condo. In these situations, you might need approval from a landlord, property owner or condo board. You might also have to follow building rules or bylaws that could affect where the charger can be installed or what type of charger you can use.

What records should you keep for the tax credit?

It's essential to carefully organize and keep records of the charger installation for the tax credit. As you move through the process, be sure to retain the following:

• Receipts. Keep receipts for the charger, related equipment and installation costs.
• Permits. Save all permit paperwork, including the signed permit card showing the installation passed inspection.
• Electrician invoices. Retain all invoices from your electrician, including charges for permits, panel upgrades and installation work.
• Proof of payment. Keep proof of payment for all expenses, such as credit card statements, receipts or canceled checks.
• IRS Form 8911. You'll use IRS Form 8911 to claim the tax credit when you file your taxes. Be sure to keep an extra copy of the form for your records.

Is it worth rushing before the deadline?

Installing an EV charger is a significant project, so it’s important to research your options and choose a charger that fits your needs.

That said, the tax credit could provide meaningful savings. Most home chargers cost between $500 and $900, while installation can range from about $1,000 to $3,000 depending on the complexity of the project and the condition of your existing electrical panel.

For example, if your total project cost came to $2,800, you could potentially receive an $840 tax credit. If you were already planning to install a charger, it might be worth completing the project before the June 30 deadline.

To meet that deadline, though, you’ll likely need to move quickly, especially if permits are required.

Start contacting electricians now to check their availability and ask whether they believe the installation can realistically be completed in time.

To qualify for the EV charger tax credit, the installation must be fully completed by June 30.

But if you don’t need the latest processor or premium features, current deals on the iPhone 17 lineup might still offer strong value. Carriers such as T-Mobile are already offering aggressive trade-in promotions on select plans that can significantly reduce the cost of upgrading now.

Put these tips to use to get the best preorder deal:

• Set up your account early. Take advantage of any pre- preorder period to shop for the phone, set up your account, and enter all your payment information. Saving all these details in your account can help you place your order when the preorder period opens, increasing the chances that you get your phone early.
• Compare offers. Compare offers on the new phone across carriers, manufacturers and retailers. Preorder offers vary, and you might find that some offers are significantly better than others.
• Check total cost. Check the total cost of your pre-order, not just the monthly payment. Pay attention to extra fees and verify that you're getting a good deal before you place the order.
• Understand trade-in details. Carefully read the trade-in terms and timelines. Most contracts give you a certain number of days to mail back your old phone after receiving your new one. Be sure you can meet the conditions to get the full value for your old phone.

The age and condition of your phone will affect its eligibility and trade-in value, and if you’re new to Verizon, you will need to add a line to complete the trade-in process. Older phones may still qualify for a trade-in during promos, so watch out for offers that might offer you more value for your older phone.

However, it’s also worth checking what your phone could sell for on the resale market, since selling it yourself may bring in more cash than a carrier trade-in and won’t lock you into a specific plan.

Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) credits

If you choose to bring your own device to Verizon, you can get a credit on your plan that can offset the costs of a new phone over time. Verizon allows you to bring a smartphone, tablet or smartwatch, as long as the device is unlocked. You will also need to check to make sure your device is compatible with Verizon’s technology.

When you bring your own device, you can get a discounted plan, including a $10 per month account promo credit, plus a $10 per month bring-your-own-device credit.

Other major carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T also allow customers to bring unlocked devices and may offer their own incentives, so it’s worth comparing plans and coverage in your area to see which provider gives you the most value for your phone credits.

Certified pre-owned phone promotions

Verizon also sells certified pre-owned phones, which can be a lower-cost way to upgrade. These devices are inspected to confirm they’re fully functional, with checks on power, connectivity, display, ports, audio, keyboards and software.

Certified pre-owned phones come with a 90-day limited warranty and typically cost less upfront than brand-new models. You can also choose to spread the purchase price over 36 months, which can make the monthly cost easier to manage.

Buy-one-get-one offers

Verizon’s buy-one-get-one (BOGO) offers can make sense for some households, but they usually come with specific requirements. In most cases, you’ll need to add a new line and enroll in certain unlimited plans to qualify. The discount is typically applied as monthly bill credits, which can make the second phone effectively free over time.

How much you actually save depends on how long both lines stay active and whether the required plans fit your needs. These deals tend to make the most sense when two people in the same household both need new devices, you expect to stay with Verizon for several years, and you would have chosen the qualifying plans even without the promotion.

The plan requirements that affect your total cost

Getting a free cell phone can sound like a great deal, but it’s important to consider the plan requirements that can affect what you’ll actually pay. Many deals require you to choose premium unlimited plans.

There are benefits to those plans, like unlimited hotspot data and unlimited international data, talk and text when you’re traveling internationally, but consider how often you’ll actually use those features to decide if the plan really makes sense for you.

Take some time to compare the plan’s cost and what you’ll actually save on the phone’s purchase price. If you’re required to keep the plan for 36 months, higher plan fees could actually exceed the phone’s value, meaning you’re not really saving any money with the deal.

What happens if you cancel or switch carriers early

“Free” can quickly become expensive if you cancel your plan or switch carriers early. If you cancel your plan, the remaining balance on your phone becomes due, and your credits immediately stop.

Think carefully about how long you plan to stay with Verizon, because switching earlier could be very expensive and leave you paying a large amount of your phone’s remaining balance.

When Verizon’s free phone deals make sense

Verizon’s free phone deals tend to make the most sense in specific situations. If you already plan to choose one of the qualifying unlimited plans, the added phone credits could reduce your overall costs. • Calculate the plan cost: Calculate the total plan cost over the required period, generally 36 months. Determine just how much you’ll pay and consider whether you would have chosen a lower tier plan if it weren’t for this deal.
• Compare value: Compare your phone’s estimated trade-in value through Verizon with its private resale value. You might be able to get more for your phone by selling it on your own, and you won’t be tied to a specific phone plan.
• Review penalties: Read the fine print and review any early exit penalties that come with the deal. If the unexpected happens and you have to leave Verizon, consider how you would pay for these fees, including the remaining balance on your phone.
• Evaluate the premium plan: Verizon’s premium plans do come with extra perks, but they tend to make the most sense for people who use a lot of data or travel internationally. Consider whether you’re likely to use those features enough to justify the higher monthly cost.

Whether you're looking to experience breath-taking natural beauty in the Dolomite mountains or the urban buzz of a global design capital, northern Italy may already be high on your list of vacation destinations. Add in the chance to attend the Winter Olympics, taking place from February 6 to 22 in Milan and the Cortina d'Ampezzo ski resort, and you may be looking at a once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

"It's not going to be cheap," says Darley Newman, who hosts travel shows on PBS and Amazon Prime. "But in the long run, it's such a cool experience when the world comes together to participate in sports that it might be worth splurging a little."

That doesn't mean you have to break the bank. Although some bargain-savvy travelers began booking Olympic trips 18 months ago, experts say there are still deals to be had. These strategies will help you stretch your travel budget like a champ.

1. Book flights now

The best time to buy off-season flights to Europe, even during major events such as the Olympics, is two to eight months before your trip. That means locking in a deal before the end of the year. For an economy flight from the East Coast, anything less than $600 is worth jumping on, says Katy Nastro, a travel expert with Going.com.

Because the upcoming Olympic Games will be the most geographically widespread ever, you have options for where to fly in. Major international airports that could work include Milan Malpensa, Venice Marco Polo, and Innsbruck, in Austria. You may also try looking at multicity flights — flying into one city and out of another — to see whether you can find a lower-cost combo.

2. Stay in the right place for the Milan Olympics

Check out accommodations in Milan's satellite cities, such as Monza or Bergamo, or in Dolomite resorts such as Madonna di Campiglio, suggests Erica Firpo, a travel writer based in Rome and host of the Ciao Bella podcast.

"You don't have to stay in the very center of Milan, which is always going to be the most expensive," Firpo says.

Renting a home or apartment may also be cheaper than staying at a hotel, especially if you have a large group that would require booking multiple rooms. You can check out possibilities at Airbnb, which has a dedicated site for the Olympics.

If you're staying farther out, look for accommodations close to public transit, which will make it easier for you to get to the Games quickly. You can use the website Rome2Rio.com to find the most efficient route.

In 2024, many Paris hotels dropped their prices if they still had vacancies as the Summer Olympics approached. So consider booking refundable accommodations now. You may pay up to 10% more, but you'll be guaranteed a place to stay, and you can check prices again after New Year's to see whether less-expensive options have opened up.

3. Make your credit card the MVP

If you've accumulated a lot of points on a travel rewards card, use them now to help pay for the trip.

If you don't have a travel card or substantial rewards built up, it may be too late to open a new account and use a generous sign-up bonus to defray costs because many cards require a sizable initial spend before you get the deal. A new card is still worth considering, though, because a big-ticket trip like an Olympic getaway will offer an opportunity to quickly rack up valuable points on the card for future use.

Look for a Visa (the only payment network accepted at official Olympic events) card with no foreign-transaction fees and enhanced rewards for travel or dining, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve card ($795 annual fee) or the Wells Fargo Autograph.

If you have a choice at checkout between paying in euros and paying in dollars, choose the former, advises NerdWallet travel expert Sally French. "That way, the credit card company will do the conversion for you, and they give you the most beneficial exchange rate," she explains.

4. Score lower ticket prices at less-popular events

Ticket sales to the public went live last February, but there are still open seats for many events. At press time, prices for available tickets ranged from $60 for sports such as women's cross-country skiing to more than $2,300 for the best seats at the closing ceremony. (Check availability here.)

For big savings, focus on less-popular sports, such as luge or curling. Or look to attend the preliminary rounds of marquee events such as figure skating, ski jumping and ice hockey instead of the medal competitions.

"Even the lower-tier matchups have a fantastic environment," says sports economist Victor Matheson, a professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. "I'd rather go to 10 events over six days in a bunch of strange sports than pool all my money for one big gold-medal match."

Have your heart set on an event that's sold out? Tickets may be available through packages offered via the Games' official hospitality site, which may also offer extras such as exclusive lounges and accommodations, but you'll pay a stiff premium.

A less costly strategy: Wait for the official Olympic resale platform, where attendees resell tickets at face value, to launch in December. Create an account at Olympics.com and sign up to be notified when the platform goes live.

5. Take a victory lap somewhere else

High season for northern Italy in non-Olympic years is in the summer, but there are plenty of nearby places that offer amazing winter experiences to add to your trip. You might, for example, visit the charming bilingual villages in Aosta Valley, go castle-hopping in Piemonte or hit the slopes at the Dolomites' other resorts, Firpo says.

Or head south to enjoy milder temperatures in Italy or other countries.

"This is the opportunity to go to Rome or Naples, to explore Sicily or Croatia," Nastro says. "You might not be able to go swimming, but those places are just as special during that time. And you get a more local experience because you're not dealing with the tourists."

Bonus: Tips from Olympics veterans

Travelers who recently attended other Games offer this savings advice.

Buy a public transportation pass. Carl Law, an anesthesiologist from Campbell, Calif., relied on weekly Metro cards to get his family around during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. "It was a lot less than the cost of carting six people around in Ubers," he says.

Enjoy free cultural events. Want a break from sports? Nicholas Wolaver, a public relations consultant in Atlanta who has attended a dozen Olympics, suggests checking out the Cultural Olympiad, a series of local arts and culture events held in conjunction with the Games. "Museums will have free events, or sometimes there is public art," he says.

Try a home swap. Psychology professor Erin Black stayed in the Paris suburbs for free during the last Olympics, thanks to a home swap via the platform Home Exchange (annual membership: $235); meanwhile, a French family used their Modesto, Calif., home. Black says, "The children each had their own room and we had a nice living area and kitchen as well."

For us golfers, winter represents two options. If you live in a climate that gets cold, winter means the end of the golf season. It usually hits right when you've finally gotten your swing in a groove, then the cold snaps come and the clubs — and your swing — go into hibernation.

You can also follow the path well-worn by clever snowbirds: Go somewhere warm, whether for a short vacation, a season or to live out your life without ever having to wait out a snowstorm to go back to the greens.

If you love someone who daydreams of reorganizing their life around the golf course (and believe me, they're not alone), these gift ideas should be high on your shopping list for the holidays.

I included a mix of price points here, and, as someone who makes a living, in part, playing two to three times a week, traveling to see new golf courses and seeing one to two Top 100 courses a year, I can tell you that each option will improve their games and enjoyment of it.

An indoor golf simulator

If you have the space, money and time, this might be the best moment to invest in a simulator for your home.

There are many brands to consider, so don't just default to Trackman or Full Swing because you see their names the most (though those are great options).

There are also many ways to set up a simulator to get the most bang for your buck and make the best use of your space. To narrow down these options, talk to the pros at The Indoor Golf Shop to find a setup that will fit your budget.

The best advice I can offer is that camera-based systems are often better than radar-based systems, but the technology is getting better each year, along with the graphics. Don't skimp on a projector and get a high-quality hitting mat. Expect to spend at least $7,500 on a quality setup.

Seriously great irons

You don't have to be a golf equipment nerd to pick out great irons. All the manufacturers ensure you have great clubs in your hands these days. Similar to cars, there aren't many lemons anymore. You just need to pick an iron that performs well for you.

The new T series irons by Titleist are this year's winner for me. My shots have never flown farther or higher than with these irons. The key is that somehow Titleist keeps finding ways to lower the center of gravity in their irons, which creates launch conditions that make even a moderate swinger like me launch the ball fast and high. These come in at $1,500 per set.

An epic driver

Aside from hitting a home run in Little League baseball, nothing has ever felt better in sports than a well-struck drive. That feeling happens more often than not with TaylorMade's latest driver, the Qi-35, which is now $100 off.

In terms of gifting, you might want to make have them unwrap a photo of the gift, then you both go in person to pick out the physical gift from the store. The driver comes in three different models to suit your game, but a good fitter can help you find the right combination of head and shaft that works for your game and swing. Don't buy one off the rack. Make sure you get it fit.

A lightweight golf bag for walkers

I'm a walking golfer and believe the game is best played on foot. I prefer hoofing it with my clubs thrown over my back to putting on a weighted vest and walking through my neighborhood. If you walk, you want a lightweight bag.

At only 4.3 pounds and about $339, the Lux Air is my bag these days. It has plentiful pockets to stow balls, tees and some sunscreen, as well as a nice full-length pocket to accommodate a sweater or vest. The bag comes in a six- or 14-way top. One of the fastest-growing brands in golf is Payntr Golf Shoes. One reason they've taken off is that they're incredibly comfortable and some of the best shoes on the market. The new Sport Classic LE, a spikeless shoe, is so comfortable that a recent madcap scramble in Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson (is there any other kind of transfer at that airport?) was as comfortable as walking in house shoes — on carpet.

The entire lineup of shoes is worth checking out. The underlying technology is designed to let golfers utilize ground forces more efficiently, which translates into faster swings and more power when hitting the golf ball.

An ortholite footbed provides great cushioning, and the waterproof uppers mean early morning rounds won't leave your socks steeping in dew or someone's spilled coffee on the commuter train. A pair costs $160.

Refined athleisure to outfit your golfer

Sun Mountain is known for creating the modern-day golf stand bag (and the Eclipse is a good choice), and they've recently stepped into apparel and improved their waterproof rain jackets.

My picks this year from Sun Mountain include: For women, the Teigan Quarter-Zip ($99), a soft fleece that feels like one of my kids' stuffed animals. For men, I like the Knockdown Vest ($199), which I can't seem to stop wearing even once I'm inside the house. And to battle the rain, go with a Monsoon Jacket ($99).

Sweaters for cooler days on the course

More golf apparel companies are including women's lines. This year, my wife and I liked the new releases from Turtleson, including the Maeve Extra Fine Merino and the Asymmetrical Funnel Collar. Both are soft and perfect for layering under a jacket or vest for fall golf rounds or when the evening chill comes out in warmer climates.

For men, the Ace Birdseye Crewneck Sweater is a handsome choice with old school flair on and off the course. Prices begin at $155.

A simple but effective piece of training equipment

I'm not one to go into deep rabbit holes of Instagram or YouTube videos on improving my swing, but the TRS Slider is a sound piece of training equipment.

One thing I know from lessons over the years is that golfers need to be forced into feeling the proper swing positions. The TRS Slider won't allow you to raise your right arm, and keeping the right arm close to your body makes it harder (though not impossible) to come over the top on your swing.

By helping you ingrain that feeling in your swing, the hope is that when you take off the aid, you're still hitting with the same proper mechanics. This is a thoughtful gift that your golfer will be impressed you thought of – and they'll use it often.

Potential drawbacks

While Howdy's $2.99 price tag is a major plus, it’s still, at its core, another subscription you’ll have to manage and factor into your monthly budget. Even low-cost services can add up quickly if you’re juggling several at once.

For example, Amazon Prime recently began offering an ad‑free upgrade for the same $2.99 monthly fee. So if you already prefer the content on that platform, upgrading there might make more sense than adding an entirely new service.

The flip side? With most streaming platforms, prices rarely stay the same for long. What starts as a budget-friendly add‑on could easily creep up in cost over time, eating into the very savings you were hoping to find.

The skincare industry is saturated with serums, creams and miracle promises. With products ranging from under $10 to over $500, and social media feeds constantly trying to sell us the next amazing thing, it's easy to wonder: Is any of this actually worth it?

I asked dermatologists, estheticians and aesthetic nurses to break down where to invest your dollars — and where you can confidently save.

First things first: All of the experts I spoke with agree that one of the biggest myths when it comes to skincare and beauty is, "The more expensive the better." That said, some pricier products have their perks. Take a look at what is and isn't worth it.

Splurge smart: What beauty products to spend on

The experts agree that while you don't have to spend three figures on your products, some higher-priced items have value, particularly from clinical and medical-grade brands. You also want to pay attention to the function of the item to decide if it's worth the spend.

"Many luxury items are overpriced for brand reputation, not performance," says Amy Wall, an award-winning esthetician. "Often, middle-of-the-line clinical brands do better because they invest in research and development, not star power."

"Medical-grade skin care typically costs more," adds Rachel M. Duke, a certified aesthetic nurse specialist and owner of an injectables boutique in Virginia that specializes in anti-aging. "But you don't have to break the bank."

So, what should you spend money on?

1. Products with proven active ingredients

When it comes to high-end skincare, pay for what's inside the bottle — not the name brand or fancy packaging on the outside.

"What makes a high-end skincare product actually worth it comes down to a few key things: Ingredient quality, formulation stability, delivery systems and clinical results," says Melanie Abeyta, a licensed aesthetic nurse practitioner and owner of Harmony Aesthetics Center in Los Angeles. "If a product contains medical-grade vitamin C, peptides or growth factors in clinically effective concentrations — not just for marketing — it's worth the investment."

Dr. Tia Paul, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Balanced Skin Dermatology, agrees. When you're reading labels, she recommends looking for "clinically backed active ingredients." Specifically, retinoids such as retinol and retinaldehyde; vitamin C — look for ascorbic acid or tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THDA), a stable, oil-soluble form of vitamin C; peptides; and niacinamide, ceramides and hyaluronic acid for barrier support and hydration.

2. Products that stay on the skin

If you're going to wash it right off or if it's not meant to absorb (as in the case with toners and astringents), it doesn't make sense to splurge.

"Spend where the product stays — like serums and moisturizers," says Wall. "Save where it doesn't, like cleansers or mists, which don't sit on your skin long enough to deliver lasting effects."

Duke adds, "Medical-grade skincare is designed to treat specific skin concerns with higher concentrations of active ingredients. That's where your money goes further."

3. Targeted treatments and procedures

If you're going to invest in something big, consider procedures over products.

Makeup artist Pilar DeMann, a brow and beauty expert with over 30 years of experience, emphasizes that who you trust matters more than what you use: "Spend on the person behind the needle. Botox, filler, lasers — these can be worth every penny, but only if you're in the hands of a skilled professional."

Where to save: Effective doesn't have to mean expensive

Where do most people overpay?

"Overhyped, Instagram-worthy product lines," says Kenzie Cammuse, a Sciton expert, aesthetician and founder of Nashville Skin Studio. "Many have basic ingredients wrapped in trendy packaging."

"Another overhyped category is anti-aging products that promise miraculous results," says Abeyta. "Anti-aging isn't one product, it's a collection of habits, including sun protection, good sleep, proper hydration and skincare basics like vitamin C, peptides and retinol."

With that in mind, you can feel confident sticking to budget picks in the below categories:

1. Cleansers, toners and simple moisturizers

These products don't stay on your skin long enough to "work magic," says Cammuse. Drugstore finds can be just as effective as pricier options.

"Brands such as CeraVe, La Roche-Posay or Vanicream make excellent, no-frills products that protect your skin barrier and do exactly what they're supposed to," says Abeyta.

Dr. Paul concurs that this is where you can "absolutely save" your money: "These essentials don't need fancy packaging or a luxury brand name to be effective."

2. Sheet masks

Wall warns against paying good money for sheet masks, or what she calls "thinned-out serums on a piece of fabric.” She says, "They're fun but not transformational."

So if you want to pick up a pack for a "spa" day with a child or grandchild or for a themed party — or if you just like the ritual of a sheet mask — you can feel confident with a drugstore purchase.

3. Makeup, with exceptions

You can spend less on makeup, especially on items like blush, mascara and brow gels. Some expert-approved brands include Burt's Bees, ELF, and L'Oréal.

"I have L'Oréal Voluminous in my kit because it works on everyone," DeMann says. "It's not expensive, but it performs just as well as some luxury mascaras."

DeMann also notes the rise of "dupes" — affordable versions of expensive beauty products. You can most likely find a dupe of any product you love with a little internet sleuthing.

An exception? Foundation, says DeMann, as "you want something that mimics skin" and "higher quality pigments and formulations make a difference."

Of course, sometimes the thrill of a luxe product is worth the price, she acknowledges, noting that Chanel and Hermes have high-end makeup lines with interesting products, if you want to enjoy a name-brand.

What products to skip completely

While some products are worth more of an investment and some less, some are worthless altogether. Avoid these products to save your budget.

1. Flashy ingredients and trendy formulas

Wall says it's not worth paying for "gold flakes, crystals, or 24K anything that won't actually change your skin."

2. Fancy packaging and marketing gimmicks

"You're paying for the jar, not the product," Wall says. DeMann agrees, saying, "Some of the most expensive creams out there are all hype and little substance."

Duke adds that many brands rely on fragrance to appeal to buyers – but fragrance can be irritating on skin.

3. Products you just plain don't need

Cammuse says to skip pore-shrinking products — "pores don't open and close like doors."

She also recommends saving your money when it comes to cellulite creams that promise miracles, overly fragranced formulas and alcohol-heavy toners.

You can also cut back on using multiple products with the same active ingredient: "You don’t need three serums doing the same thing."

How to tell if a beauty product is worth it

Follow these steps to assess when a product is worth its cost.

1. Read the ingredients

"Check the ingredient list before anything else; ingredients over labels is a must," says Abeyta. Wall agrees: "Marketing might promise 'hydration' or 'renewal,' but the ingredient list tells the real story."

Look for actives in the top five to 10 ingredients. If retinol or vitamin C shows up at the bottom, they're likely not doing much.

Abeyta recommends visiting sites such as Paula's Choice or The Ordinary, which make it easy to find affordable, no-frills products with scientifically backed ingredients.

2. Watch for stabilized formulas and delivery systems

"It's not just what’s in a product, it's how it's delivered," Dr. Paul explains. "Look for stabilized, pH-appropriate formulations from brands that prioritize science, such as Skinceuticals and La Roche Posay."

Paul added that you should look for words like "encapsulated" and "stabilized," which indicate they increase absorption and effectiveness.

3. Do your research, but don't rely on reviews alone

While online reviews can offer helpful perspectives, Duke points out that they often reflect personal preferences and may be biased. Instead, she recommends seeking out products that have undergone clinical testing or have been endorsed by experts, as this provides more reliable evidence of effectiveness.

"And remember, everyone's skin is different — what works for one person may not work for another," she says.

Cammuse recommends turning to dermatologist-backed websites or checking the comments on estheticians' or dermatologists' social media for more trustworthy insights. She cautions against being swayed by "influencer hype" that lacks scientific backing.

For well-researched, impartial information, Abeyta suggests resources like Lab Muffin Beauty Science and Truth in Aging, which focus on the science behind products and their ingredients, rather than just user opinions.

The bottom line on beauty spending

It makes sense to invest in products designed to treat your skin with proven ingredients and splurge now and then on luxe makeup if you love how it looks and it makes you happy. Professional procedures from providers you trust are also worth the investment.

But save your money on staples like cleaners and toners, and really save your money when it comes to hyped-up sheet masks and fancy-sounding ingredients that don't do anything.

As Wall puts it: "Don’t follow trends — establish rituals. Your skin doesn't need more; it needs consistency, quality and a little common sense."

"Unlike most consumer goods, some watches appreciate due to their brand history, limited availability and increasing collector demand," says Robin Westerling, CEO of Longdavon, a luxury leather watch band company. "The finest investment-grade watches are ones with classic designs, strong historical background and limited production runs."

Heritage brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet are good bets for long-term value.

For example, you can't go wrong with an iconic timepiece such as the Rolex Submariner, the Omega Speedmaster Professional with its mythical history, a Tudor Black Bay 58 for those who appreciate utilitarian style with vintage appeal, or any watch from the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak collection. Prices for these range from around $4,000 for certain Tudor Black Bay 58 models to more than $63,000 for the highest-end Omega Speedmaster Professional model.

You can find investment watches through a variety of channels.

"For brand-new watches, authorized dealers are the safest choices," but they may have long waiting lists for in-demand models, Westerling says. Trustworthy pre-owned dealers include WatchBox, European Watch Company and Bob's Watches, all of which guarantee authenticity.

You could also venture to auction houses such as Sotheby's, Christie's and Phillips for rare watches, "albeit usually with a more substantial budget in mind," Westerling adds.

"Enthusiast groups and online platforms, such as Chrono24, might also serve as viable options for finding investment watches, but buyers should handle these portals prudently to avoid counterfeit products or overpriced offers."

If you're also celebrating a graduation this summer, know that Gen Z grads want nice watches, too — maybe you can make it a legacy gift.

2. Coins

Was the father on your gift list the type to slip dollar bills into birthday cards? If so, here's your chance to return the favor of gifting money, but with a grown-up twist.

"Many coins offer promising long-term investment potential, especially those that combine rarity, bullion value and a history of past price appreciation," says Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez, coin expert and numismatic editor for numerous outlets, including COINage Magazine.

Examples include "blue chip" coins such as the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, 1955 doubled die Lincoln cent, 1916-D Mercury dime, 1913-S Barber quarter and 1916 Standing Liberty quarter. American Eagle coins are also solid options with patriotic designs and high-purity precious metal content.

"Other promising coins to consider are those with precious-metal value, including any pre-1965 90% United States silver coins, some of which can currently be bought for as little as $5 or $10," McMorrow-Hernandez says.

If you have deeper pockets, you could take a chance on the fervent bouillon market with a pre-1933 U.S. gold coin such as the Saint-Gaudens double eagle, "widely considered one of the most beautiful coins ever struck." Prices for the double eagle start in the low $3,000 range.

The best place to buy such coins is through a reputable coin dealer. Look for a dealer affiliated with numismatic associations or authorized by one of the major third-party coin grading companies, such as Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).

"Always go the extra step to check for customer feedback on the popular review platforms and websites," McMorrow-Hernandez says.

Once you have your coin in hand, McMorrow-Hernandez says to resist the urge to clean it.

"Cleaning coins only risks irrevocable damage to their surfaces and almost always lowers their value," he says.

Touch coins only on their edges, and store in a cool, dry environment away from heat sources, fumes and items with chemicals that can cause harm, such as paper or plastic.

3. Collectible sports cards

Some of the best gifts carry not only forward, but also back. Collectible cards can marry nostalgia with future value for the ultimate Father's Day gift. Watching the card increase in value is half the fun of the hobby, after all.

Not all cards achieve this value appreciation. "Many cards lose market value due to a lack of sales volume," says Justin Shump, head of buying at Arena Club, an online collectible card marketplace and grading platform. "Having said that, if you buy a player who has long-standing popularity in the hobby, they can have several cards with long-term upside."

You can't go wrong with "greatest of all time" (GOAT) players, but for the ultimate gift, choose a player your dad actually watched, admired or rooted for, Shump says. "Once you've got a name or era in mind, set a price range and look for iconic cards — especially rookies or early-career cards — from reputable sets."

The best places to find these cards are online auction websites such as Arena Club and PWCC Marketplace. "They typically feature cards that are the most attractive for the widest range of buyers, which is a great indicator of market sentiment and value," Shump says.

You can gauge a card's appreciation potential through websites that track market value over time, such as Cardladder.

Once you have the card, help Dad protect it by getting it graded (card-speak for authenticated), then keeping it in a fitted sleeve or case. "For long-term storage, consider a foam-lined case or lockbox to keep your graded cards safe from physical damage, moisture or UV exposure," Shump says.

4. Whiskey or other spirits

For dads who appreciate a true taste of luxury, consider a fine whiskey or rare spirit. If you normally think of liquor as something for immediate gratification, you're just not thinking long-term enough.

Take the Macallan Edition Series whiskey, for example. When the first limited batch was released less than a decade ago, bottles sold for about $100 each.

"Today, the Edition No. 1 sells on the secondary market for several thousand dollars, an appreciation of 2,000%," says Mahesh Patel, founder of The Universal Whisky Experience.

Other options include Bowmore, Balvenie and rare American bourbons, which you can find for several hundred dollars at many retailers or online at such sites as Reservebar or Caskers, Patel says.

The key to ensuring investment potential is to find a spirit with a limited issue. He recommends joining whiskey clubs where you can "gain great information and access to off-market gems." Some clubs to consider include Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Craft Whisky Club.

He also advises starting small as you make contacts and acquire knowledge. Be sure Dad's whiskey or spirit gets insured and stored in a secure room with climate control.

5. Shares of stock, ETFs or mutual funds

Watches, coins, cards and whiskey can be fun gifts, but they can also require time to find and procure. If you want something easier to access but no less valuable over the long-term, gifting shares of stock or an ETF or mutual fund might be the perfect answer.

All you need is a brokerage account where you can buy shares or already own some you want to give, and the information for Dad's brokerage account where he can receive them. You can then transfer the shares from your brokerage account to Dad's based on your brokerage firm's procedure.

Note that you might need to submit the request in writing and it could take up to a week for the shares to arrive in Dad's account. After that, Dad can reap all the rewards of a great Father's Day gift with long-term investment potential.

Journey is circling the country, as is Earth, Wind & Fire, Bruce Springsteen and Miranda Lambert. Paul Simon is making his way to the U.S. for a series of shows after a leg in Europe, and Santana is traveling around the country after a few dates at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in May.

If classic rock's not your style, there are plenty of other concerts to choose from in the pop realm, including Ariana Grande, who's touring before starring in London's Sunday in the Park with George next year, and Ed Sheeran.

We all know we should prioritize our own well-being so we can be there for others — or put our own oxygen mask on first, to use a well-known analogy. But as any parent will tell you, that's not always possible. Whether you're taking care of a child, grandchild, parent or partner, you've got a lot on your plate.

As Kiplinger writer Jacob Schroeder explained, studies have shown that people who count their blessings may have a more positive outlook on life. Energized: Barista-style coffee at home

Who doesn't need a jolt of caffeine to start the day? And who hasn't cringed at handing over hard-earned cash for overpriced and, let's admit it, ultimately disappointing coffee at a trendy coffee shop? It almost makes you long for the days of instant — only that's about to get more expensive too, as inflation and geopolitics affecting coffee growers start to bite.

Yes, these are first-world problems. And there's a first-world solution, too, for starting your day with the coffee you dream about — the delicious kind you get on vacation but can never quite find back home.

Enter the espresso machine. Armed with a few reviews from a site you trust (Tom's Guide lists the best espresso machines, for example), you'll be able to find one that suits you, whether that's a manual model that allows you to play barista at home, or a fully automated one that does it all for you at the touch of a button.

Of course, the beans are just as important as the machine itself. Next time you have a really great coffee, ask the barista for the name of their supplier and track them down online — they might offer a subscription service.

Overall, this may be no cheaper than getting your coffee to go — but at least you won't have to stand in line (or move to Italy) to get a decent caffeine fix.

Home wellness: Enjoy your very own sauna

There are some things Nordic countries do better than anyone — and you're bound to have at least one of them in your home already: Ikea furniture, Legos tucked away in a closet, some Gravlax in the refrigerator. Certainly an ABBA album tucked away somewhere, if you're of a certain vintage.

But how about making room for a sauna? Depending on where you live in the U.S., it may sound crazy to sit in a small, enclosed space that pumps out heat when you're used to sitting in an air-conditioned home.

However, the dry heat created in a sauna is said to promote calm, relieve stress and relax tight muscles, and there's evidence to suggest it may also relieve minor pain and improve cardiovascular health. How many parents invest time and money in sports lessons for their kids but would never consider stepping off the sidelines and on to the field themselves — even if they were keen players in their youth?

From a health perspective, it makes total sense to get back into the game as an adult — you'll be improving muscle strength, lowering the risk of disease and improving cardiovascular fitness. And while group activities will help you meet people and make new friends, which in turn can boost your mental health, even participating in solitary mode (at the driving range, for example) can improve your wellbeing.

And don't forget cognitive fitness — revisiting a foreign language, picking up an old musical instrument, or learning a completely new skill from scratch will keep your mind sharp and may help reduce the risk of dementia.

Major splurge: Did you know Major League Baseball teams offer "fantasy camps," where adults can spend a week during the offseason training and playing like a professional?

All experience levels are encouraged, including no experience, and former players often are part of the camps. Men, women and children can don the pinstripes with the Yankees' fantasy camps, with prices starting around $3,000.

For all: Take care of your health

Finally, there's one vital (albeit perhaps less enjoyable) activity that we should definitely not scrimp on as we age: Taking care of our bodies. And no matter how privileged we are, we all need a reminder of the risks we face and the warning signs to look out for.

Even if you don't have a history of cancer in the family, for example, you should be taking a proactive approach to checking for changes in your body. Some checks (skin self exams, breast self exams and testicular self exams) should be carried out regularly at home.

You can find a free skin cancer check near you on the American Academy of Dermatology Association website, and the American Cancer Society lists cancer screening test recommendations by age. If you're worried, explore options with your physician sooner rather than later.

Minor splurge: Take advantage of what your insurance covers. Most cover preventative care, including annual check-ups and vaccinations. If you're on Medicare, it offers 14 services for free that fit the bill, including screenings and nutrition services.

Major splurge: If you have the means, you could consider concierge medicine, a model where you essentially pay for access to doctors and health care. Prices vary wildly, from a few thousand dollars a year and sky-high of that.

Options include MDVIP, where you pay an annual fee of around $2,000 for 24/7 physician access, health screenings and longer appointment times.

You could also see the experts with the Mayo Clinic Executive Health Program, which offers a comprehensive health evaluation done over one to three days at campuses in Phoenix, Jacksonville and Rochester, Minnesota, as well as in London. Costs vary depending on your evaluation specifications, but it's typically a few thousand dollars. While you can request an appointment yourself, if you're still employed, you could see if your company would join the program with a corporate enrollment.

Jewelry

With intrinsic value, practical utility and deep emotional resonance, jewelry can be a unique and meaningful Mother's Day gift, says Jonathan Goldberg, founder and CEO of Kimberfire, a technology-driven jewelry brand bridging the gap between online and offline diamond jewelry retail.

High-quality jewelry has a strong resale value and precious metals like gold and platinum are common additions to investor portfolios to hedge against inflation. For example, gold has outperformed U.S. inflation by an average of 3% per year over the past 40 years.

The key is to purchase fine jewelry from the source, meaning direct-to-consumer retailers who purchase from the manufacturer, Goldberg says. This helps ensure quality while also avoiding any retailer markup on price. Some options include Goldberg's company, Kimberfire — which, he says, purchases diamonds right from the manufacturer and has pieces manufactured directly for clients — as well as Quince and Aurate, both of which focus on sustainable jewelry.

Tell Mom to hang onto those certifications and appraisals since they're essential for resale or inheritance. It's also a good idea to keep the original packaging and receipts, which can help boost resale value.

Some jewelry Goldberg recommends include diamond stud earrings, tennis bracelets and natural diamonds. If your mom isn't a diamond person, you can find similar designs with colored stones or even in plain gold.

"For an investment piece, what is important is that any stones used are natural," he says. Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones may look nice, but they won't retain their value over time.

"Store your investment jewelry in a dry, padded box, and always make sure your pieces are insured while stored and while being worn out of the home," he adds. And, just like your investment portfolio, you should have your jewelry inspected and cleaned at least annually by a trusted jeweler.

2. Handbags

When chosen well, handbags can be both a stunning accessory and smart long-term investment. The Hermés Birkin bag appreciated in value by 14.2% between 1980 and 2015, outperforming the S&P 500, according to a study by Baghunter.

But not all luxury handbags have the same investment potential. "Hermés, Van Cleef + Arpels, Cartier and Bulgari hold their value incredibly well and can be resold at a higher value than the original retail price since they are so difficult to source," says Dana Auslander, founder of luxury alternative asset manager and marketplace LUXUS.

If price isn't a concern, Auslander suggests focusing on "clear winners" like these. Alternatively, Chanel and Prada handbags can be more cost effective and accessible through boutiques.

"Other luxury brands such as Gucci, Bottega and Balenciaga are less valuable and sell at a discount to retail," she says.

Whichever brand you choose, be sure to purchase bags directly from the brand or a reputable reseller with an authentication process.

"Be cautious about authenticity, valuation and condition," Auslander says. "If you are buying from the store, condition is obviously guaranteed, but if you are buying on the secondary market, this is where I would be the most cautious."

3. Art

Artwork is another asset with investment value that also offers immediate gratification. Mom gets to admire her painting today, while knowing it'll be worth even more money in the future.

"Pre-established artists in the fine arts field provide the most secure investment potential," says Jordan Kalteux Davies, attorney at Knowles Gallant Timmons. "If established artists are outside your budget, consider researching renowned art schools and recent graduates. Emerging artists can also yield strong returns as they gain recognition."

Where to purchase an investment-grade work of art will depend on the type of art you're interested in buying. Contemporary pieces can be found at places like Artsy and Artnet. More historical works are better sought at auction houses like Christie's, Sotheby's and Bonhams.

Private collectors, individual galleries and even antique shops can also yield lucrative finds. For more guidance, there are art advisors who can help, such as through the Association of Professional Art Advisors or Arts Consulting Group.

You can determine a piece of art's investment potential by looking at historical prices for other works by the same artist. If the sale price increases more than inflation during the time period, you've got a potential investment.

"As of 2025, works by Andy Warhol, Banksy, Pablo Picasso and Loie Hollowell ranked among the most sought-after for return on investment, with average ROIs ranging from 8% to 11%," Davies says.

It's important to note that you likely won't receive a deed or official title with your purchase. "For substantial investments, it may be wise to purchase title insurance to protect your ownership rights against potential claims or disputes," Davies says. You should also check if the piece has ever been used as collateral, as this could compromise full ownership rights.

Finally, copyright in the U.S. is automatically granted to the artist at the time of creation and remains with the artist even if the work is sold. "If you wish to reproduce or sell the work in the future, make sure the copyright transfer is part of the transaction," Davies says.

4. Wine

You may not think of investment potential when you think of wine — more like drinking potential — but fine wine can fit as nicely in Mom's investment portfolio as her cellar. However, not all wine makes a good long-term investment.

Wines that can stand the test of time need to come from recognized "blue chip" wineries, be from "special vintages when the growing season had ideal weather and temperature," and have a tannic structure and acidity that provides longevity, says Asher Rubinstein, partner at Gallet Dreyer & Berkey, a law firm specializing in domestic and international asset protection, who is also an avid wine collector. "Wines that meet these criteria can age in the cellar and appreciate in value over many years."

One example is Chateau Lafite Rothschild, from Bordeaux, which, he says, "has a name brand that goes back hundreds of years and is known and respected around the world."

The challenge here is that such reputable blue chip brands come with high price tags, usually upwards of $200 per bottle. A more cost-effective alternative and accessible alternative might be something like Santa Cruz-based Ridge Vineyards' Monte Bello, Rubinstein says.

Proper storage is crucial to protect your wine's long-term integrity. This means cellar temperatures of around 55 degrees with 60% humidity where the wine won't be exposed to sunlight.

"Caring for the wine in these ways will allow the wine to develop properly over many years, reaching its peak investment potential," he says.

5. Shares of stock, ETFs or mutual funds

While not as shiny or exciting to open as other items on this list, shares of stocks or funds can make meaningful gifts with long-term investment potential. They're also likely much easier to come by than some other items on this list.

You could give Mom shares of a favorite publicly traded company. If the stock price is too high, many firms now allow you to buy fractional shares. Shares of a diversified fund, like an S&P 500 fund, or a dividend or income fund will give the gift of monthly income. There are also many socially responsible funds available if you want to help Mom invest according to her values.

To give shares as a gift, all you need is your mom's account information. Make sure this is a brokerage account that can receive shares in kind. You can then submit the transfer from your brokerage account to hers.

Amazon shoppers who are fans of the company's "try before you buy" program got a rude awakening when they tried to log into their accounts this month.

The brand posted a subtle notice at the top of the landing page that read, "Prime Try Before You Buy will end on 01/31/2025. Shop Amazon Fashion to find our full selection of fashion items." The notice offered little insight as to why the program was ending, but Amazon reps confirmed it's all part of CEO Andy Jassy's effort to cut down on costs at the company.

The company also cited the increase of AI technology that allows customers to better predict their fit sizes as a reason for shuttering the program. "Given the combination of Try Before You Buy only scaling to a limited number of items and customers increasingly using our new AI-powered features like virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts to make sure they find the right fit, we’re phasing out the Try Before You Buy option, effective January 31, 2025," Amazon reps told CNBC.

While Amazon attributes the decision to advancements in AI-powered sizing tools, the move also reflects a broader trend in retail. Macy's continues to shrink its store footprint as part of an ongoing effort to modernize the department store chain and adapt to changing shopping habits. The retailer plans to close 14 underperforming locations in 2026 following dozens of closures in the past two years.

Costco also carries brands like Dyson, SK-II skincare and more. As you're stocking up on food items, make sure to swing by the beauty section to save on purchases for yourself or the beauty lover in your life.

At least designer sunglasses are one-size-fits-all. Score Valentino frames at Saks Off Fifth for under $200, and Gucci square sunglasses for 51% off retail costs.

Although Amazon has a pretty large reseller platform, selling gently-loved versions of designer bags like Fendi, Prada, and Louis Vuitton, I didn't see a huge difference in price for bags at Amazon vs other retailers like The Real Real.

For those who love the look of luxury but not the price tag, dupes have become a popular option. While they’re not the real deal, high-quality dupes can give you the designer aesthetic at a fraction of the cost. One standout example is the viral "Walmart Birkin bag", which offers a similar structured silhouette and chic style for under $100.

Many dupes can be found on platforms like Walmart, Target and Amazon, making them accessible to almost everyone.

However, it's essential to differentiate between dupes, which mimic the style and counterfeit items, which attempt to pass as authentic designer products — the latter being illegal.

Although dollar stores have changed a lot over the years (the biggest change being that everything inside is no longer a dollar), shopping and retail experts say there are still hidden deals that can help ease the financial burden of your holiday shopping essentials and non-essentials.

At the same time, just because the word "dollar" is in the name of a store doesn't mean that other big-box retailers like Walmart won't be able to rival (and even beat!) their prices. That's why if you're looking for ways to save this holiday season, it's best to plan out a detailed list of what you're in the market for and do a little research based on which stores have the cheapest items. That way, you won't be caught off-guard with any extra expenses and can make just one trip to a dollar store and another trip to a big-box store like Walmart to pick up all of your essentials.

In any case, here are a few things that dollar stores are currently in the lead for for most affordable options.

1. Seasonal decor

According to Joanna Clark-Simpson, head of consumer research and consumer expert at PissedConsumer, seasonal decor is one of the things dollar stores continue to excel at. And, as the leader of a review-based website where customers can air their wins and grievances, she sees this as an ongoing win for dollar stores across the board.

However, she says, "Shoppers should [still] check price tags carefully, inspect items and plan their purchases." Cheap decor can be dented, broken or flawed, so give it a good once over before putting it in your cart.

Things like tabletop Christmas trees are $1.25 at Dollar Tree, where a similar item retails for nearly $3 at Walmart.

Fun room add-on items like Christmas-themed soap dispensers are a win from Dollar Tree at $1.25 and an easy way to add a fun pop of color to an often forgotten room like the bathroom. You will, however, have to fill up the dispensers with your own hand soap (which, honestly, sounds like a good idea, because there could be additional fillers added to dollar store soaps).

Garland is another find you should head to the dollar store for. But Clark-Simpson recommends staying away from twinkle lights, as electronics and anything power or battery-operated tends to fall short at dollar stores.

2. Stocking stuffers

Clark-Simpson says stocking stuffers like socks — even fun, printed socks — can always be found at the dollar store and make great, affordable gift add-ons.

You can pick up golf and motorcycle-printed socks for just $1.25 per pair at Dollar Tree and a five-pack of socks for $5, meaning you've hacked the system and can pay $1 per unit again instead of $1.25.

However, if you're in the market for a larger pack of socks to break apart and gift separately, Walmart will be your best bet. You can find a 20-pack of girls socks there on sale for $5.

3. Baking essentials

According to Clark-Simpson, perishable food items should be avoided at dollar stores since customers find expiration dates to be tricky, but shelf-stable items like sugar or cookie mixes will always be a score at dollar stores — even if it's just by a little.

A one-pound box of sugar at Dollar Tree is $1.25, and the same box will run you just under $2 at Walmart.

If you want to save both time and money, pick up cookie mixes at the Dollar Tree, which will save you about $2 per pack vs big-box stores.

4. Kids' entertainment

The kids are home from school during the holidays, which means it's time to find cheap, creative ways to entertain them. Dollar stores offer easy and affordable holiday craft painting kits and DIY ornaments that you can paint from home.

5. Disposable glassware

Just like it's a good idea to keep a storage container full of Christmas decor that you can easily stow away when you're not using it, it's a great idea to have a case of cheap glassware that you don't care about your guests breaking.

Dollar Tree is a great place to pick up reusable glassware that's just $1.25 per unit, so you don't have to purchase and re-purchase plastic cups each year. These glasses will last through the years and won't cause strife if one of your guests has too much eggnog and accidentally knocks it off the table.

Don't forget your coupons

Did you know even dollar stores offer coupons and discounts? According to writer, author, and nationally recognized consumer finance and budgeting expert Andrea Woroch, most dollar store shoppers have no idea that they can save even more at the stores.

"Dollar stores like Dollar General have their own apps to help you navigate sales, save more through coupons and in-store deals and earn rewards," says Woroch. "For example, the My Dg app offers cash-back opportunities on a variety of products that you may need to buy anyway and you can apply rewards towards future purchases."

And, she says, shoppers can take advantage of websites like Coupon Cabin that have deals to Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and more.

Even your receipts can hold some money-saving power, as you can actually scan photos of your dollar store receipts to earn rewards. "Take pictures of your receipts using a free rewards apps like www.Fetch.com to earn points for free gift cards to a variety off stores like Amazon, Target and Walmart to offset future purchase needs," says Woroch.

What Makes Student Credit Cards Different?

For the most part, student credit cards work in the same way as traditional credit cards. However, they typically offer features that make them more beneficial to college students, including the following characteristics.

• Don't require great credit to get approved: You may be able to get approved for a student credit card with a limited credit history or even no credit history at all.
• Low credit limits: You likely won't rack up a sizable amount of credit card debt with a student credit card because your credit limit may only be a few hundred dollars.
• Credit-building benefits: Like most traditional credit cards, student cards usually report your account activity to all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. You may also get certain benefits when you practice good credit behaviors, such as a credit line increase with responsible use.

How to build credit with a student card

If you can qualify, using a credit card wisely can be a great way for a college student to build a credit history. You may have already taken out student loans, but that debt may not contribute much to your credit history until you start making payments after graduation. Opening and managing a credit card is new territory for most college students, so it’s especially important to make sure that you understand how to avoid paying interest and how you can boost your credit score. To protect your credit and steer clear of late fees, make sure to pay your bill on time each month. And to sidestep hefty interest charges, pay your bill in full rather than making only the minimum payment.

In the meantime, you can build credit with a student credit card when you use the card responsibly and pay your bill every month. What's more, you can avoid interest charges if you pay your monthly statement balance in full. You may also be able to earn rewards along the way.

If you're not sure about getting your own credit card or you don't qualify to get one on your own, consider asking a parent to add you as an authorized user on their credit card account. If they've used the account responsibly, it can help you establish a positive credit history.

How To Qualify for a Student Card

Once you have selected a card, make sure that you are well-positioned to get approved for credit. Opening a new credit card account will temporarily lower your credit score, so you want to be sure you can get approved for the credit card you want. One way to avoid this ding to your credit score is to get pre-approved first. We have noted in each card description if pre-approval is an option.

The Credit CARD Act limits credit card options for college students, so it's important to know what's required to get approved:

• You generally need to be a college student: Whether you're an undergraduate or graduate student, some card issuers may ask you to provide your school's name during the application process.
• You may need some credit history: Some student credit cards require that you have at least some credit history to get approved. Check with the card issuer before you apply to understand the requirements.
• You may need a co-signer: If you're under the age of 21 and you don't have independent income, you may need a co-signer to get approved. Unfortunately, most of the major credit card issuers don't allow co-signers.
• Allowable income depends on your age: If you're under the age of 21, you'll need to prove that you have sufficient independent income to repay any debt you incur. If you're 21 or older, you may include a variety of income sources that you have reasonable access to, such as personal income, spousal income, scholarships, grants, trust fund distributions and more.

How to Pick the Right Card

Before you choose a student credit card, it's important to research and compare multiple options to determine which one is the best fit for you. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

• Eligibility criteria: If you haven't had the chance to build a credit history yet, some cards may be out of reach.
• Rewards: Many student credit cards offer rewards on your everyday purchases. Look at the rewards rates for each card you're considering and determine which one aligns best with your spending habits.
• Annual percentage rate (APR): Student credit card interest rates are generally high, but it's still a good idea to try to limit your potential costs if you carry a balance. Remember, too, that you can avoid interest altogether if you pay your balance in full each month.
• Annual fee: Student credit cards typically don't charge annual fees, but there are some other credit cards designed for people with little or no credit that may charge an annual or even a monthly fee. Try to avoid these costly options.
• Other features: Look at other features each card may offer. For example, a card may be more attractive to you if you can get a credit line increase after a handful of months or enjoy an introductory 0% APR on purchases for a short period after you open the account.

Tips for Building Credit With Student Cards

Once you've been approved for a student credit card, here are some tips to help you make the most of your card and build a positive credit history:

• Always pay on time: Your payment history is the most influential factor in your FICO credit score, so it's critical that you pay your bill on time every month. If you accidentally miss a payment, get current as soon as possible — late payments aren't reported until you're 30 days past due. To avoid forgetting, consider setting up automatic payments.
• Avoid racking up a high balance: Your credit utilization ratio is the percentage of your available credit that you're using at a given time. For example, if you have a $150 balance and a $300 credit limit, your utilization ratio is 50%. The lower your ratio, the better it is for your credit score, so try to keep it low by using the card sparingly or making multiple payments throughout the month.
• Avoid opening multiple accounts at once: Having more than one credit card can help you establish a broader credit profile, but opening multiple accounts in a short period can hurt your credit, especially when you're just starting out.
