Smart Buying

Best Holiday Deals at Dollar Stores

You can pick up gifts, wrapping paper, holiday decor and other seasonal items on the cheap at dollar stores.

The holidays can be hard on your wallet. A National Retail Federation survey found that the average holiday shopper plans to spend $967 in 2017.

Most will go toward gifts, but a big chunk will be devoted to non-gift holiday purchases. Do yourself and your budget a favor by picking up inexpensive seasonal items at the dollar store instead of overspending at traditional retailers.

Holiday Decor

You can find most of your holiday-decorating essentials at dollar stores. The best part: Pretty much every item on your list will cost you $1 or less. A sleeve of seven glass-ball ornaments? Just a dollar. Ditto for garland, ribbon and big bows. Even scented candles sell for a buck.

Holiday Entertaining

'Tis the season to entertain. A buck buys you multipacks of party invitations. Serve up seasonal treats on $1 platters sporting snowmen and poinsettias. Keep cleanup simple by investing in disposable bakeware and holiday-themed disposable plates, cups and silverware.

Dollar Store Gifts

Holiday mugs sell for a buck apiece at dollar stores. Turn them into inexpensive gifts by filling them with candy, coffee, tea or cocoa mix. Need a gift for grandma? Put your kid’s artwork in a $1 frame. Gift bags and rolls of wrapping paper also go for $1 each at dollar stores.
