How does your income stack up against your fellow citizens? Are you among the top 50% of earners? The top 10%? Have you reached the pinnacle: the top 1% of earners in America?
Using data released by the IRS, Kiplinger has built a calculator to give you the answers.
And, as a bonus, we'll show you how much of the tax burden is borne by you and the fellow citizens in your earnings category. The income breakdowns here are based on adjusted gross income (AGI) reported on 2005 tax returns, the latest statistics available.
You'll find your AGI on your most recent tax return on line 37 if you used the Form 1040, line 21 on the Form 1040A or line 4 on the 1040-EZ. You don’t have to raid your files, though. The IRS income categories are broad, so you'll get a good idea where you stand if you simply plug your annual salary into the calculator. If you're married, use the AGI from your joint return or combine your and your spouse
