The top models in each category represent the best values to be found there, based on our ranking system. We start by sorting the hundreds of 2009 models by price and category; then we pit them against their peers, looking at performance, value, safety, roominess and our driving impressions. Scouring the top-ranking models, we come up with a list of our favorites--trim levels that offer everything you need at the best cost. Most categories have 25 top models, but the minivan and wagon categories have fewer top picks, simply because there are fewer models to choose from.
