SEVEN ENTRY-LEVEL LUXURY CARS
With that in mind, we've identified seven entry-level luxury cars that emphasize comfort more than performance and rated them with up to four stars. Browse through the slide show to see how much they cost (including Kelley Blue Book's transaction price) and to get Kiplinger's take on performance, value and safety. Resale values come from Automotive Lease Guide. Safety features include head airbags and electronic stability control unless otherwise noted. All are 2006 models except for the 2007 Lexus ES 350, which is pictured here and won our four-star rating.

Chrysler 300C

MSRP: $34,400
Dealer cost: $31,868

Mercedes-Benz C280

MSRP: $33,725
Dealer cost: $31,419

Volvo S60

Trunk space: 13.9 cubic feet
Backseat legroom: 33 inches

SEVEN ENTRY-LEVEL LUXURY CARS
Jaguar X-Type

MSRP: $32,995
Dealer cost: $30,086
New-Car Blue Book Value: $32,493
Resale value (3 years): 39%
Horsepower: 227
MPG: 18 city/24 highway
Trunk space: 16 cubic feet
Backseat legroom: 34 inches
Our take: All-wheel drive is standard, and you get a handsome exterior and luxe interior (although rear legroom is tight). But this Jag's dismal resale value reflects buyer wariness -- and incentives that have been used to goose sales. You should be able to negotiate a price close to dealer cost. Electronic stability control is a $525 option. Jaguar X-Type
