If your adjusted gross income was $57,000 or less in 2009 (whether you're single or married filing jointly), you can prepare and file simple federal tax forms free. Select from 20 different commercial tax-preparation-software vendors at www.irs.gov/freefile (some companies charge to prepare and file state income taxes). If you count yourself among the 30% of taxpayers whose income is too high to qualify for the free-file program, or your tax situation requires you to file special schedules and forms, you may need online or in-person help.
