Benefitscheckup.org Screens for programs that help low-income seniors pay for prescription drugs, health care, utilities and other basics.
Eldercare Locator (800-677-1116; www.eldercare.gov) Identifies local resources for the elderly.
Home Health Care Covered by Medicare if you meet the criteria; agency must be Medicare-certified. Average hourly agency rates: registered nurse, $25; home-care aide, $10 to $12; physical therapist, $35; occupational therapist, $31.
Home-Care Service Agencies Companionship, light housekeeping and errands; average rate: $18 an hour, according to a 2007 MetLife survey. Franchises include Home Instead Senior Care and Comfort Keepers.
Adult Day Care Social and some health services. Average daily rate: $35 to $65.
Geriatric Care Manager Assesses needs, provides referrals and, if necessary, arranges for services; $100 to $500 for an assessment and $60 to $90 an hour for ongoing management.
