The U.S. external debt was $13.45 trillion in June 2009, according to the CIA World Factbook, and President Obama’s latest budget proposal projects that number will reach $20 trillion by 2015. By that point, the public’s share of that debt is expected to reach an alarming two-thirds of the GDP — up from 41 percent at the end of 2008. Numbers like these can be difficult to digest. For some perspective, here’s a look at how our national debt compares to other notable financial figures.
