There were 26.5 billion credit card transactions in the U.S. in 2008, according to a December 2009 Nilson report. That’s up from 21 billion in 2003. As overall credit card usage increases among Americans, so, too, does their outstanding debt. The average household credit card debt was $10,679 at the end of 2008, according to the same report.
