Wondering when your need to file your taxes? That’s a question we hear more and more, expecially as the tax-filing deadline approaches. This year’s tax filing deadline is a bit later, thanks to a Washington, D.C. holiday. Your 2010 tax return is due April 18, 2011, three days later than the traditional April 15 tax deadline.
The holiday is Emancipation Day, marking freedom for Washington, D.C.’s slaves during the civil war. The District made it a city holiday in 2005, and the federal government has decided to respect it as well when its observance falls on April 15. This first happened in 2006.
So, even if the holiday’s new to you, enjoy the extra few days to prepare your taxes or file for an extension, if you’re under the gun. And be sure to check out all of our 2010 Tax Tips to help you file -- and save.
