Gather your 401(k) and IRA statements as well as your retirement planning questions. Free help is just a phone call away.
Members of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors will take your calls and questions Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. eastern standard time, as part of Kiplinger's National Jump-Start Your Retirement Plan Days. Dial 888-919-2345.
If you have troubling getting through to a planner on the toll-free line, e-mail Kiplinger's Personal Finance Editor Fred Frailey. Include your phone number, and a planner will return your call next week.
NAPFA's members are fee-only financial advisers who meet strict credential and educational requirements. They are knowledgeable not just about investing, but also about insurance, estate planning, tax planning and retirement planning.
These professionals typically charge $100 to $250 an hour for their advice. But on these three days you pay nothing -- even the call is toll-free.
"Sometimes, you just need to talk to a real person," says Christopher Brown, a NAPFA member and financial planner in Gaithersburg, Md. But sometimes complex questions require complex answers. If your question can't be answered on the spot, you may be referred to resources on the Internet designed to help you find what you need, including NAPFA's Web site to locate a financial planner near you.
Retirement is the number-one concern among many people, especially those who saw their savings battered by the 2000 market implosion. "A lot of people are still paralyzed after the past few years-they're thinking about opportunities again, but aren't really sure where to put their money," says Kiplinger's Personal Finance editor Fred Frailey. "We're hoping this program will spur people to take action and help them formulate a sound plan for rebuilding their nest egg."
