GOP 'Unity' Resolution
May Have Opposite Effect

A Republican purity test could be a turnoff for independent and moderate voters.

Next month, when the Republican National Committee meets, the very definition of a Republican may be decided. On the agenda is what RNC member James Bopp Jr. is pushing as a “unity resolution,” although others have compared it to a suicide pact. What it really amounts to is a litmus test designed the purge the party of candidates who don’t tow the conservative line. It achieves unity by keeping everyone who doesn’t agree out of the discussion hall.

The resolution lists 10 “principles” of Republicanism and declares that anyone who doesn’t support at least eight-- either through words, deeds or voting records -- should be denied the party’s endorsement and financial support.

The 10 principles include the familiar: Cut taxes, shrink government and back free enterprise, for example. But the wording of the principles ranges from simplistic and benign to the extreme and impossible. For example, on the benign side, No. 7 states: “We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat.” I can’t think of any politician in either party who doesn’t support that goal; the question is how to define “effective action,” and the resolution gives no hint.

On the extreme side is No. 10, which states: “We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership.” That seems to mean all restrictions so even convicted felons and the mentally imbalanced would be free to buy an Uzi. Not to press the point, but even a convicted murderer or terrorist who escaped jail would be able to buy a gun.

Others depend on semantic games. No. 2 rails against “government-run health care” and is aimed at the Democratic health care bills. But Democrats deny it amounts to government-run health care and insist they’re against that, too. So they could presumably support the principle. On the other hand, Medicare clearly is a government-run health care program. So are we to presume Republicans now oppose Medicare?

No. 5 opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, but those who favor allowing illegals to work their way into the system after paying penalties and back taxes insist that’s not amnesty, an argument also made by John McCain and George W. Bush. Whether you can sign on to that pledge depends on how you define the term.

The official name of the document is the “RNC Resolution on Reagan’s United Principle for Support of Candidates,” and it begins with a preamble paying homage to the former president, mentioning him five times. It quotes him as saying anyone who agreed with him 8 out of 10 times was a friend and points out that he believed Republicans should welcome those with diverse views.

But that’s exactly the opposite of the resolution’s intent. It’s aimed at excluding, not welcoming, diverse views, and commentators have been quick to point out that President Reagan would have flunked the test. He violated the resolution’s tenets on raising taxes, lowering the deficit and shrinking government. He also sold arms to Iran, and he endorsed what truly was an amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Apart from the damage the resolution will do to the Republican Party if it is adopted and observed, the document will put another nail in the coffin of intelligent discourse. It forbids what Washington needs most -- people who are willing to calmly discuss their differences and try honestly to bridge them. Instead it forces candidates to harden their stance and swear off any compromise. In short, it forbids them to think on their own and come up with new and original ideas to solve the nation’s problems, which is exactly what we all need most. Hopefully, the wiser heads in the Republican Party will see that and find a way to kill the resolution before it even comes up for a vote.

Shutting out other views would fit right in with Democrats who will not let FOX in with the truths. If there is no difference in the parties, we only need Democrats.

These people need to start listening to Bruce Bartlett for some direction. They are living in the past and refuse to accept the present and plan for the future.

A stupid analysis If ever I saw one. Felons have NO trouble obtaining guns now--only we law-abiding citizens are denied our constitutional rights in this matter. And the health care bill under consideration right now is government run "health care"--- socialized medicine plain and simple. There will be rationing of care, limits imposed on old people's care, and reductions in medical research and development, and the quality of med school graduates will fall. The guy who wrote this article claims that we need to calmly discuss our differences in Washington. Amazing! Guess who is denying any and all input by Republicans? Right! The Democrats!

Rhetoric is the art of ruling the minds of men. Quotation of Plato

I disagree! The Democrats have ALREADY taken the same stand, officially or unofficially as they never work for good compromise. Take the comments made during the so called "Assult Weapons Ban" of the 1990's where it was plainly stated that they wanted to ban and conficate all weapons; that (the AWB law) was "a good start, a step in the right direction" (toward total banning). History now shows that law did nothing but upset law abiding citizens resulting in the turn over congress. The health care reform will be even bigger. My conclusion is that this resolution will separate the real reformers (conservatives) from the tellers of half truths. I think this is better than Newt's contract with America!!!

Neither the Democrats or the Republicans get it. The current "Democratic agenda" is Marxist. The Republicans are powerless to stop it. But more importantly the real problem is the failure of elected officials to discard the status quo and represent their constituents. The first and only requirement is to defend the Constitution. The progressives want a world government usurping the wisdom of our founding fathers. They truly believe the government can run something. My 36 years in government say "not". They truly believe the government creates jobs. Of course they really just want more union employees. They want control of the monetary system, the banking system, the healthcare system, the energy sector, and anything else they can take. The only "litmus test" is will you vote the conscience of the people who elected you. If you don't or won't you should be voted out, period.

The most charismatic Sarah Palin would automatically become the leader of the conservative, tea and republican party, She is the only ordinary, regular ,true all-American woman who connects with the regular Americans. The divided party is actually the democrats since the health care reform bill is opposed by the conservative blue dog democrats and the far left wing nuts. Obama,Reid and Pelosi can't even persuade these blue dogs to vote despite bribes and intimidation. The republicans can't block the passage of the health care reform bill so it is the democrats against the democrats that are holding the passage of the bill. This is the will of the American people who are against the health care reform bill with massive spending, massive debt/deficit,higher taxes, higher insurance premium, eventual bankruptcy of the private insurance companies and the forcing of Americans to have health insurance or pay a fine or go to jail. This will result in rationing of health care treatment , longer appointment times and longer time before surgery. The democrats are lying about the real cost which will be in the trillons of dollars. The increased taxes, insurance premiums will start right away but the real universal health insurance coverage for all people will be 4-5 years after to hide the true very high cost of universal health insurance reform. The democarts are so corrupt and blatantly lying in front of the American people. We are now a banana republic with corrupt, arrogant, tyrannical, elitist, tax cheating,lying,anti-America,anti-military,anti-CIA,islamic loving dictators.

The fact that this resolution is even being considered is already proof that the Republican political machine is out of touch. It is no longer a party of business, only of "big business" and Christian ideology (although I doubt Christ would recognize it). It has already made it's position clear: candidates wanted, no moderates need apply.

The Republican Party is out of touch and their credibility is shot. What they are very good at is fear mongering and misinformation. Now with snopes and factcheck.com most of their lies are now challenged. ie death panels, healthcare proposal by Dems gov run. They had 8 years in the White House - 6 of them with the congress controlled by their party and ran this country in the ground financially and wiped out a lot of equity the middle class had obtained. If the Fox Republican Propaganda Network is their benchmark for restoring credibility then even the extreme Christian right can't help them.

I hope Bopp's resolution carries. It will fracture the GOP for a generation.
