The IRS allows taxpayers to switch from filing separately to filing jointly with an amended return, but not vice versa. After the filing deadline for a year has passed, you can't switch from joint to separate.
You can also change from married filing jointly to head of household, as long as you do so within three years of the due date.

Can you ammend your filing status from married filing seperately to head of household within 3 years if you qualified for head of household at the time?
