News Corp.'s Hulu.com, featured in our Fabulous Freebies collection last year, was just the tip of the online media revolution. With advances in streaming video and high-speed digital downloads the future of Internet multimedia is has arrived. Essentially anyone can start an online cinema site today and sign for digital distribution rights to host or "air" film and TV, but surprisingly, the space is getting crowded. Plus, many studios jumped in to distribute their own content from their own Web Sites or online screening rooms. And some have investested in larger sites.

Check out these sites
we found the folks at Wallet Pop have been watching ...

1. Snagfilms.com, from the winning team of Ted Leonsis and Steven Case, who also gave us AOL, houses documentaries. Challenge your beliefs, expand your mind, take a trip around the world and find inspiration to take part in the world around you with more than 650 short and long films. You can even watch Leonsis'  Nanking, which placed in the Sundance Film Festival.

2. The Auteurs is a classic start-up partnering with larger companies to acquire distribution rights for independent, foreign and classic cinema centered around social networking and film discussion.

3. Babelgum is a less chaotic version of You Tube for independent producers, plus it has content partnership deals with Sony BMG, BBC, PBS, among others. You'll find music, film, comedy and special themes such as the environment for full-screen viewing or mobile downloads.

4. Joost.com targets a slightly younger audience with Japanese Animime,  MTV shows and music videos, but this site has many mainstream TV shows and lots of movie classics.

5. Reel 13,  sponsored by public television Thirteen/WNET, gets a special call out for its Kids and Education channels. Teachers and parents can find lesson plans along with age-appropriate suggestions for educational videos.

6. Crackle.com is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Viewers can watch original web-only series and films as well as off-air and premium cable TV shows and feature films.

7. SurfTheChannel.com is a search engine that can tell you which of these sites will have the movie, documentary or TV episode you're looking for. It also offers a guide to other online cinemas.

8. Jinni.com is a genome project that gives people personalized media suggestions based on preferences, similar to how Pandora.com creates personalized radio stations.

Get the full scoop on virtual cinema from Wallet Pop, which also covers how You Tube is fighting to keep its top place in video on demand.

Another site for your freebie movie list: http://tv.blinkx.com. I've been using it to watch tv, but just realized recently that they have movies, too.
