EXECUTIVE POLL

Bernard Madoff, convicted of running an $65 billion Ponzi scheme, was sentenced to 150 years in jail. What’s your take on his punishment?

Too heavy. There’s no point having him die in jail.
About right.
Not nearly heavy enough.
Not sure

I just attended a franchise seminar. The speaker represents a few hundred franchises that (he says) are hand picked. He has the prospect (aka victim?) answer some questions about themselves then he makes recomendations - based on your personality, capital situation, etc.. If you pick a franchise, then he does some due dilligence for you. If you both decide it's a good idea, he helps you get started. He says he offers this service free of charge, which means he gets a commission if he's able to sell you a franchise. Has anyone done this? Successfully? Unsuccessfully?

Green Computing Roaring Ahead Despite Economy

The biggest developments in the greening of IT and computing are good news for business, since they are about cutting costs as well as energy use.

"GreenTips" is a monthly Kiplinger Recommends feature from Greener World Media Inc., which writes environmental news and advice for business in a variety of web-based publications, including GreenBiz.com GreenerComputing, ClimateBiz and GreenerBuildings.
Matthew Wheeland is the managing editor at GreenBiz.com.

2008 was generally a mixed year for efforts to help businesses take steps to lessen their impact on the environment. But not when it came to computing and IT. "Our current economic crisis actually bodes better for green IT than just about any other sector," GreenBiz.com Managing Editor Matt Wheeland writes in this month's GreenTips column.

Even better, most of Wheeland's top five green computing trends are also good news for business, since conserving energy can mean huge cost cuts. 2008 was a big year for green design in computing, with companies beginning to churn out energy- efficient products and products made of recycled and easily recyclable materials. GreenBiz suggests different types of software that turns off computers at night or over the weekend. And don't scoff -- AT&T is phasing in a program that eventually will save about $13 million a year.

Companies are also beginning to learn about both the need and the know-how to manage the real energy hogs of almost any business, : IT centers. "In the wake of a global recession, new awareness of the extent data centers are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, and new research finding that as many as two-thirds of all data centers may face critical power shortages in the next two years, greening the data center becomes all the more urgent," Wheeland says. He points to several reports and case studies that spell out in detail various ways to streamline IT operations and scale back energy consumption.

Beware of Gov, Gov bureaucracies and Gov regulated or re-regulated monopolies bearing cost saving gifts. Tax providers are forced to pay in green for all Gov incentives, tax credits, carbon footprints, etc.. plus not cost effective alternative energies & Commission mandated utility rebates. I can prove this & the fact that energy conservation increases electric bills (Quantity x Price =14% rate-of-return). Unfortunately, socialist Gov restricts me from competing to make alternative energies cost effective and provide millions of truly private sector jobs. One of my heuristic problem solving solutions,(saving $1,000,000,000,000), was printed by one liberal news paper (by mistake?)in 1991 and holds true today. In 1971, 2 years before the first OPEC embargo, I sought Congress $ for the "L5 Societ"y to provide solar power from outer space transmitted via maser to earth receptors" - since turned into "star wars". I know of no tax consumer that can hold a candle to my experience, accomplishments, or God-given talents. A more socialistic Gov will not be any less hostile to the private sector and reason I'm going out of business. However, my grandchildren know my epitaph will read, "At least I tried".
