Immigration Emerging as Key issue in the 2008 Elections

In every election, there's one issue that ignites the passion of voters, making it potentially decisive. In 2008, that issue may well be immigration.

With the first primary votes just six weeks away, immigration is becoming a touchstone issue for candidates in both parties, threatening to be decisive in both national and local campaigns. It's far from the top concern of a majority of voters -- Iraq, health care and the economy all outrank it on that list. But for a strong and very vocal minority, it's becoming the kind of passionate issue that brings more voters to the polls, often enough to swing an election.

The heated and decisive debate is bad news for the thousands of employers who are hoping for a comprehensive legislative approach to immigration, one that increases the number of high-tech and low-skilled visas and includes a large guest worker program. These employers are dependent on foreign labor and fear severe shortages if tough border enforcement measures aren't accompanied by an expansion of legal immigration programs.

The problem is that a polarizing dispute hurts long term. It pushes the candidates into unbending stands, making compromise considerably harder after the election is over and a new Congress and president sit down to work.

It's also bad news for the Democrats, who are stuck dancing around the immigration issue. Their base, which includes many Hispanics, wants an immigration bill to contain some way for illegals to make amends and earn U.S. citizenship. But most Republicans and many independents strongly object, saying that equals amnesty.

Democrats need to find a middle path to keep their own base happy without alienating independents. That's awfully tricky, however, as the dispute over drivers' licenses for illegal immigrants has proven. Hillary Clinton's attempts to thread the needle on that issue opened her up to charges of flip-flopping, forcing her to eventually come out against licenses, although most of her opponents and most Democrats favor them on road safety concerns.

The GOP is more united on immigration, with the presidential candidates arguing over who is tougher on illegals. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who once urged a balanced approach, has moved sharply to the anti-illegal immigrant side because that's where most of the party's primary voters are. But the GOP position creates its own set of problems. It dooms their hopes of making major inroads with Hispanic voters, and it's already costing Republicans support from some business leaders who pushed hard for an immigration overhaul.

Other issues seem to be working FOR the Democratic candidates. Americans are angrier than they've been in years, fed up with Washington, which can't seem to do anything about their concerns. Although voters blame both parties for the gridlock, they place most of the blame on Republicans. In almost all public opinion polls, voters say they'd rather have the Democrats handling the Iraq war, health care, the economy and education. The GOP receives more backing only on keeping taxes low and fighting terrorism, among major issues, but even on these, the Republican advantage is smaller than the party has had in the past.

Whew, boy are you late to dinner! "Emerging?" Immigration has been an election issue for many of us for quite some time! Get a mitt! Catch a clue!

With the election around the corner, yes both the republicans and the democrats are looking at the immmigration issues. Both parties do need to look at immigration process carefully. There are over 200 thousands people that have been waiting for over 2 years just to get a letter of appointment to swear in to obtain their citizenship. They are all being told that they are waiting on an FBI back ground check. If they really want the immigrant votes, these are the people that they need to seek the help, from. This is a major issue that is affecting the lives of the people that came into this country the right way and did the right thing to file the paper work legally and maintain a legal status in the U.S. Here go the democrats or republicans votes, over 200 thousands of them.

I am not against immigration, but I am VERY against all the Law Breaking Illegal Immigrants just being allowed to stay. I brought my X-Husband into the country and we Followed Every Law and I do not think that it is fair to just say it's OK, You Rule and Law Breakers can STAY! I think they should ALL have to go to the back of line, and just because you had a child here shouldn't make you or the child a Citizen! I struggle as a SINGLE American Mom and I don't have any time or money and They get FREE Medical Care and they don't have to pay taxes. I can't afford to go to the doctor because I can't afford insurance because I work and don't get the child suport that I am court ordered to receive. They give Dead Beat Dads and Illegal People all the benefits and no one seems to have to spend time in jail? An Illegal Immigrant can go out and drive with no license and kill an American Citizen, this is OUR Country, and we can't be kept SAFE? What are the Government Officials doing about my daughters safety? Whay aren't they working so HARD to Protect US instead of NON CITIZENS?

I believe you are completely wrong on the belief that the voters say that the Republican's are to blame for the situation on all the issue's that effect American's today. Because look at how well the polls are rating the Democratic Congress today it is the lowest it has been in 20 years.

The "Solution". Illegal Immigration is absolutely wrong. This is what should happen. If companies want to hire Illegal Immigrants they should pay a tax per year per employee that they hire. The Illegal Immigrant should be able to get a work card and should have to pay a higher tax percentage on their earnings than Legan Immigrants and US Citizens. FBI back ground checks still is a must. No driver's licenses should be issued to these workers. Workers need to pay a deduction from their check for a bus ride to and from their country. The proceeds after the government bus ride program has been paid should go towards education of our citizens. Put this in place and I bet you, we will not have an Illegal Immigration "Problem" for long.

It seems all the Democratic hopefuls are for some type of amnesty for 20 million illegal aliens. None of them want to "listen to the people". Approx. 75% of all Americans "DO NOT WANT AMNESTY" in any form for those illegal aliens. So if none of the Dermocrats will do what the "people want" then it stands to reason that we, "the people" must not vote for any Democrat. The only Republican I see that truly wants to "stop illegal immigration" is FRED THOMPSON. He also wants to secure our borders - improve inspection of all imports, balance the budget, bring more troops home from Iraq, and have general health care for all Americans, etc.

People dont know who to express their anger to until they found the illegal immigrants. immigration = racism. happened to the blacks before.

It is ironic that once I applied for a job in US. I got a positive response but US immigration hurdles had put everything to nothing. I ended up working in the Persian Gulf region while a lot of illegals are working in the US who are not as skilled as I am or the rest who want to get in there. Thank you America. One day you might wake up competing with China over the highly skilled workers.

Illegal immigrants should be fair to the legal ones. There are ways for them to be legal, why not try to live in a peaceful life. In the end, they will be the one who will face the consequences if ever they will be caught. On the other hand, the immigration should be the one who will take the legal and necessary actions. _________________ pearl New York Immigration Lawyer Marina Shepelsky, located in Brooklyn, assists clients from the New York metro area and across the United States in all immigration and naturalization matters.
