I Don’t Want to Own Stocks

Alternative investments can produce stock-like returns.

You can come close to producing stock-like returns without owning stocks, but to do so you’ll have to look beyond plain-vanilla bonds. With plenty of money in commodities, this portfolio should have no trouble keeping up with inflation. And its stakes in high-yielding investments, such as floating-rate loans and master limited partnerships, should produce some growth.

However, unlike the others in this package, this is not a portfolio you can set and forget for long periods of time. Think of it as a tactical portfolio, or one that depends on spotting the best opportunities in the market at a given time and adjusting as needed.
