Save Money by Biking to Work

Cameron Huddleston

You can cut costs by leaving the car at home. But be sure that your bicycle is adequately insured.

Leave the car in the garage this week and bike to work. Why? For starters, it's Bike-to-Work Week from May 17 to 21. And it's a good way to burn a few calories and save a few bucks.

In fact, you might save a lot if your commute is more than a few miles and you have to pay for parking. Use our calculator to see how much you can save bicycling to work.

Make sure your bike is adequately insured if you plan on pedaling to work this week. It should be covered under the personal property section of your homeowners policy. However, if your policy covers only actual cash value, you'll be reimbursed for what the bicycle is worth if it's stolen, not what it would cost to replace it with a similar model, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Replacement cost coverage, which costs about 10% more than actual cash value coverage, will reimburse you for the amount it would cost to replace your bike.

If you own an expensive bike, consider getting a personal property endorsement, which will insure it for its full value. The cost of the endorsement is usually based on the value of the item.

Also hang on to receipts from when you purchased your bike and any equipment you use with it. This will help speed up the claims process if your bike is stolen. And register your bike at the National Bike Registry. If it's stolen and police find it, it will be returned to you rather than sold at auction.
